Autopsy Round 5, 2025: Positives and Negatives vs Carlton

To be fair, Brisbane have been spluttering. Don't think they've won a game by more than 4 goals.

They're 5-0 but they're not looking convincing it any.
Agreed but our clearance work was a lot better in that game than most. A bit of luck with umpiring, shots on goal and the big boys not cramping we probably win that game.

+ we are becoming an AFL problem now.
Big if, but if Reid ask to leave (at this point does anyone blame anyone wanting out?) that leaves us with 1 top 10 draft pick on our list, and he's a half backer.
We need assistance.
Priority picks
Additional cap space to throw at and entice players to move over.
Soft cap space to help fast track our young guys, and McQualter needs all the help in assistance he can get around him.

We are bad. Worse than North before us and see what they were gifted. The loosing culture has well in truely gripped the club, that's going to be very hard to shake quickly. We are going to be irrelevant for a very long time. The club dug ourselves here, but we need help to get ourselves out of it.
Well not really - if he does decide to leave along with Allen, we'll likely have another 3 or 4 top 10 draft picks on the list. That's unless we decide to split them...

Just like to thank Nisbett , Simmo and co for ****ing this great club up by being spinless twerps, and not having the nuts to make the tough decisions back 2021, when it was clear to all and sundry that the playing group had given up, and a fair few were just dialing it in for a paycheck.

It is ****ing hard to support this club, and if I'm being honest they have sucked the joy out of footy for me.

The only positive for me at the moment is watching the youngsters, but how long are they going to want to hang around when you are getting flogged each, whilst busting your butt, when the senior players don't give a shit.

Christ we field a year 2 gold coast suns mid except without high picks/skills and triers.

I'm not surprised. There is no hope.

We are relying on the 31 year old yeo for the silver bullet. Chad warner will take his role going forward. Hope warner is mentally prepared.

I like to think our game against melb last year was the future without kelly and yeo.

But here it is. Remove prime kelly and yeo and you are ****ed.

Get duggan out. Get kelly in. I fail to see how kelly offers less then duggan
There is zero chance Chad signs up with us next year, zero. How could you possibly want to step into what is historically the worst team in AFL history.

They do, eventually.

We're not there yet, and we're a long way from it.
We are pioneers in the pre build REBUILD space.

And then..
My own builder rings me to say its gonna be 6 months late. And then a year goes by and it's 40k over budget. And my family are still living between my parents joint and dirty motels n shit...
I'm greatful, but some nights I sleep alone in the back of my work van just to get some respite from the intensity and unknowns.

Its 2029 and The eagles have just won their 3rd game for the season in round 23. Life is good. Because a wins a win.

What would be the point of us getting high draft picks, we'll just give them.away for some WA player at the end of his career, wanting to come home to top up his super

Not sure it was just them.

I remember talking to west coast supporters about the need to trade players out otherwise we were heading for a long and painful rebuild and I got two kinds of responses:

"but x and y are contracted and they're from WA" and also
"we don't spend more than a year or two outside of finals"
"we don't rebuild"
"rebuilds are for minnow clubs"

In many ways the expectations of supporters forced the club to try and find short term solutions as well because the concept of a rebuild was intolerable and unacceptable to a group of supporters conditioned to success.

The club and supporters have been living under a rock while the entire footy industry evolved and went straight past them.

And now we are here....

Pretty deflated after that. Hard to see where the improvement is coming from team is getting beaten so badly that it can’t be good for development for the kids. Hard to see any kind of plan or structure when you can’t get your hands on it.

Coach, CEO ect all been changed. Where are we lacking currently ? What’s so rotten about the club that the reserves and league side get smoked in basic football.

Man some of you need to pick your battles. Maric in defence has been good and he will get better. His first 11 kicks today were at 100% efficiency. Meanwhile his captain is grabbing the ball in space, running backwards and kicking a helicopter across goal like he has brain damage.

Assistant coaches are the next to go

Just a reminder, Mini did say at the start of the year they focussed primarily on the game plan to try and bed it down as quickly as possible so they did less basic running and basic skills instead, did more intra-club stuff earlier.
I suspect they'll put a heavy focus on skills for the next pre-season (and rest of the year).

Also we wanted this. Kids instead of washed up has been older players not pulling their weight.

Just relax and take the small joys and wins from these matches.

The soft cap has well and truly fckd us. It’s full as it is with mediocre assistants and what aspiring coach’s would want to join this trash heap thousands of kms away for mediocre wages. Needs to be lifted asap

Yes, it's not ideal for the kids. Losing by big margins can create losing habits. Some bad vision of Cripps goal when neither Ginbey nor Maric stood on the mark and then just looked at each other when Cripps kicked the goal...

One other interesting thing that David King talked about what CP. Lowest number of contested possessions in a game ever recorded.

So I wanted to have a look at the stats.

Here's players ranked by CP. What instantly stood out is none of them are our "leaders". Damning statistic.

And we go backwards another 2 years.

Chesser is tethering on being a bust
Hewett cannot get on the park
Ginbey for all his promise is a half backer. You do not use top ten picks on half backers
And now (potentially if) Reid goes, what was the point of the last couple years?

3 possibility 4 of our (very few) high picks not making it as midfielders (which we are screaming for above all else).

So we bring in a few more 18 year olds to fill the gap, and we see another 2/3 years of performances like today on the regular, with the seemingly never ending rebuild (imagine what where we would be know if we went hard after missing finals in 2021??

Or we could just use our financial position to get a competitive advantage and say "**** the cap, we're spending a million over".

The taxes associated with going over the cap have been lessened, and it's really the only way being a rich club can be a competitive advantage in this comp.

**** the WAFC royalty lol.

Ginbey is currently justifying his pick, would be 7/8th in a redraft.

It was always going to be tough going with such an inexperienced lineup in the guts.

I think the hardest thing to take was the way we managed to butcher so much good work and end up getting torched on the turn over. Carlton aren't very good so getting thrashed sticks in the craw.

I will say it must be hard for a young side to keep to task when they get shafted by the umpiring. Surely we are saying something behind closed doors because it is laughable the way we are getting officiated.

Hopefully Ryan and Waterman can stay on the track for a few weeks now

You realise we have changed our CEO, chairman, head coach, list manager, S & C staff, half of our playing list and created a new head of football position, right?
You realise that it has made no ****ing difference. Right? We are irrelevant and will be for years. What has improved?

I liked the part where Ryan won the ball, kicked it forward and chased up his own kick - didn’t get us a goal but it was great to see. If he doesn’t need a week off for some reason this week it’ll be good to have him for back to back games.

Also, the nice chase and tackle from [PLAYERCARD]Oscar Allen[/PLAYERCARD] - also great to see, especially from him. Basically unsighted from that point on but when they find him, give him a pat on the back for the tackle.

Still an absolute country mile off being even a basically competitive team though. That part was not good.

What frustrates me the most is the half chase after turnover. There's too many players neither on their player or actually chasing hard to pick up an opponent who is clearly in line to be the next link in the chain. They're out there running around but having zero impact. The definition of the witches hat. That [PLAYERCARD]Liam Ryan[/PLAYERCARD] chase down tackle on the outer wing was the exception, and he'd run 100m after a forward 50 turnover to win it back. Without a true captain or legitimate leaders who demonstrate the work rate required, we're doomed. I'd drop Duggan and Allen and put Gov as captain when he returns because he puts his body on the line every week. Someone has to set the standard.
