Recap at a glance:
  • Harley Reid has signed a two-year extension, which keeps him at West Coast until at least the end of 2028.
  • He still has one season left on his rookie deal, the new extension kicks in for 2027.
  • Cal Twomey reports that the deal could reach up to $2m per year if Harley triggers all incentives (e.g. this is not a base $2m per year deal).
  • This is a straight two year extension, with no player option for a +9 or anything similar.
  • Get a big dog up ya, Victoria.

I know it’s harsh, but it was clear as dogs bollocks we were never, ever going to win 7/8 games this year.

Mystifing that any rational analysis of our list could conjure up more 3/4 max even if all the ducks and Yeos lined up.

We have amongst the lowest injury list and we are not remotely competitive.

Anyway on topic, Reid’s goneski and just need to get the best return possible.
We had 5 wins last year with basically the same list plus Barrass. So obviously more than 3 or 4 was possible if everything lined up.

You could always join the Perth Bears where you'll be tagged by rock hard, seasoned blokes. (Not that there's anything wrong with that).
It's like none of you even know what a bear actually is.

A 2025 8/9 game win season required a 2024 Freo win (surely no one expected us to repeat that), a Demon's win like last year (unlikely), wins against a Roos side that was supposed to be improving quicker than us (but with no loss of a Barrass type, plus Darling/Parker) and a win over GC at home which would be a tad optimistic.

Presumably, we would have had to beat the Crows and Saints and that seemed like a stretch

I'll give you thinking 2025 wins against the Tiggers was almost a universal certainty, but now that doesn't look so certain.

Roos at home, no brainer.

So Tiggers & Roos at home, plus one surprise win = 3 wins which seemed about right.

In summary:
  1. Our side and Mini performing as expected.
  2. Fans overestimating our list as expected.
2027 I would expect us to be at the 8/9 game wining level.

2030 = Number 5 is alive.

That doesn't happen for clubs as bad as ours.

Just look at Richmond and North, for example.
Particularly Nth who have an experienced, proven, multiple premiership coach now into his 2nd season with them.
2 pre-seasons as well to get the game plan going.
So yeah, a new head coach 8 games into his first gig as a head coach with a team that is below below average is going to have a tough time.

3rd isn't it?

The list is and is not basically the same.

The loss of Barrass should not be understated when he was the only AFL level KPD along with an injury prone 32 y.o.

Yeo is a massive loss not only for his own considerable contribution but for the asssistance and protection he gave to Harley Reid. Reid’s input has dropped off a cliff along with no Yeo.

Although much criticised Darling’s contribution was very important even last year. He offered an exit from defence and more often than not halved contests if he couldn’t mark. I know JWilliams and AReid are promising players but a lot of the time I don’t know where they are with the ease the ball is marked by the opposition and rebounded in our forward line.

Then there are the mid age fringe b22 players such as Witherden and Rotham, there may be others who though no world beaters made the team stronger than a kid playing his first few games.
Kelly’s performance has fallen off a cliff.

So although there haven’t been massive list losses a number of factors have combined to make the team weaker than last year. Add to these an appalling early draw for a struggling team, the AFL must really hate us.

Rationally we have done about as well as could be expected.
McQualter has been dealt a really crap hand, I don’t see how he can be under too much pressure for at least a couple of years.

We'd have two wins already (Essendon and Melbourne) if:
a) yeo had been fit for both; and
b) McGovern hadn't gone down before half time against Melbourne

Also could've beaten Brisbane if Bailey hadn't died in the arse.

An improvement on last year to 7/8 wins wasn't unrealistic. We have a pretty healthy list but so far this year we've lost all of Yeo, Waterman, Ryan, McGovern to injury [all top 5 players] and had a regression from Harley and very very poor starts from supposed A graders Allen and Kelly. Not many clubs can sustain a hit to the prime movers like that. Not to mention one of the all time fixturing stitch ups, a number of off field crisis's and a steep learning curve from McQualter who's clearly made some rookie errors along the way. If not for Bailey Williams suffering an all body cramp in round 2 and losing Gov at the worst time twice we could easily be 2-5. Which is where Hawthorn were this time last year when we were debating with straight faces whether they might be even more ****ed that we are.

Its entirely possible that after the bye things start to click for us and a bunch of teams turn to shit lie Sydney and Carlton and Melbourne did in the back half of last year and like the Suns often do as well. Would be more than happy since we are half way there already to continue death riding us to pick 1 and priority picks but we could easily still finish this season with more wins than we had last year.

Barrass and Darling being way overstated here. TB gets burnt on the lead all the time, he does a sexy intercept or spoil but that’s about it. Darling had one good game, GC at home.

It’s Yeo and all Yeo why we haven’t won a game. Add to that an undercooked Reid.

This.

The two players that couldn't miss games this season are Yeo and Gov, there are no replacements for them that come close to what they bring on the list atm.
