Hot Topic Michael Voss - Coaching in 2026. Should he remain beyond that?

I want Voss gone and haven't said otherwise for a long time but even I don't want him sacked midseason.

And I agree it;s more than just him but I just don't understand why, if our assistants are so bad, we keep appointing them. Is Vossy just comfortable being comfortable?

Cook has his finish line in sight and stability has always been his mantra.

Voss knows this is his last senior gig and keeping everyone onside is his best chance of extending it for as long as po$$ible.

Robert from Sydney is, well … in Sydney.

How much reign the board allow Wright at season’s end will be the interesting thing …

Are you guessing this or have you heard something, If true then I agree Lloyd should be first gone.
Heard second hand that all assistants already had contracts for 2025 last year so there was no real ability to make changes at the end of 2024. I wouldn’t treat the rumour as gospel but it tracks with us making zero changes to assistants at the end of last year.

Q3 epitomises everything

+20 in contested possession
+6 in clearances
+5 in i50
+ In a bunch of individual statistics

Culminates in losing the quarter by a goal.

Player errors 👍
Player confusion 👍

The same errors and confusion every week? 👍

Horrible i50s? 👍

This team seems to be defined by panic.

Before the round:

Top 3 in all of contest, defense and transitional footy

But

Dead last in scores per inside 50.

You've got Harry and Charlie in that f50

the correct process is…

Piss Lloyd off immediately first and foremost.

Find a good replacement - GW is well placed to find a good one.

Next is replace HC at a convenient time.

Maybe replace Austin (?)

Sit down with new incumbents and work out long/short term goals and come up with a plan and could also throw in a vision statement for sake of completeness.

Start Executing the plan….

New assistants
Player trades (out with unneeded types and bring in types that align with the plan)

Same group sit down regularly to keep an eye on progress.

It’s really not that hard - if we are serious.

Are those Q3 stats accurate!??

Insane :drunk:

We seem to have a habit of over correction under Voss. After 2022 we looked at minimizing the scoring chains against us , so we spent the pre season practicing slowing ball movement. Then the first half of 23 we couldn't hit the scoreboard. Similar tale again now, our defensive numbers were down last year, now we are first and appalling inside the f50. Too much emphasis on fixing, not enough on fundamentals.

yeah we crunched them. We even went d50 to F50 easily - the crux of everything is the forward setup.

Obviously don't setup to score - because we obviously don't score... And gws showed we don't set up to lock the ball in very well.... Sydney and gws both have exposed the weakness in this dump long and don't score. They've copied the book Adelaide wrote. Press us into one wing. We overcommit and bomb long. Leaving the fat side wing ripe for a rebound

And rebounding is the best way to reliably score against us because Haynes Weitering and Jsos had become a bit of a unbeatable tall wall back there. Especially for any sort of methodical entry by teams.

It's man utd thinking oh how goods this we dominate field position everygame and then come 17th for the season because nobody bothers to compete with them in the things they're good at. The just lay the counter attack trap.

To be fair it's 2 traps we lose consistently to. The same 2. Stoppage width when we are losing the ruck battle - Heeney/Warner/daicos etc just waiting and we collapse in and the fat side rebound after giving the narrow side transition up.

Carlton plays in straight lines. The way they're taught to. And they're very good at winning the ball and getting the transition started. Like really good at it... But the books written and it's easy to counter.

Hence my view on a Voss not having achieved anything of note in his 8 senior years of coaching. Reactive is his MO. Has not a great pulse or feel to the continuous changing trends through and in season

Although he'd probably prefer the Tassie gig, and who can blame him, I'd really like to hear Buckley's pitch to take us forward.

I don't like how Buckley's career trended towards the end at Collingwood.

Longmire is a far better option choice from the experienced coaches currently out of a job. I don't actually care that his sides get flogged in the Grand Final, my expectations are so low that I'd be thrilled just to get to one every once in a decade.

However my preference would be to run a process similar to whatever Collingwood did, I'd love to uncover the next Craig McRae.

If he's already peaked , then at least he's gone one better than 'kick from a prelim' Ratten- who some are still obsessed with through selective memories.

Melbourne also lost to North by 10 goals. Just the nature of the season

They've reinvented themselves since. They are also unified. Dee's are a contested side too, but they have far more running options than us, and a gun small forward. They don't even need a gun tall forward.

I've had my fair share of criticism toward Voss...

But one thing I refuse to believe is that he is responsible for weak, gutless efforts or basic skill blunders from senior players.
He isn’t responsible for skill errors of course, he is responsible for the standards, the culture, the game plan, the structures, selection and I assume a lot to do with types we draft.

We continue to dish up crap and Voss continues to enable the players that do it.

There should be a few early-mid career coaches with experience in good systems and modern game looking for a HC gig.
I guess what I'm saying is your above point would have applied last time.
Our final three was Voss, Kingsley and Giansiracusa.
Here's an article from a year or so before we were looking

Like I said, I've had my go at Voss already...

But these players need to be held accountable as well. I've seen enough to know they aren't going to win a flag. Hence the reason for a mini rebuild.

So he should hold some of them accountable now, set some higher standards on field and drop some players who continue to go against team instructions or minimum output.
