Autopsy Round 12 - St Kilda defeats Melbourne

Gotta love Ross in the presser when asked about the crude bump on NAS.

Words to the effect of “I’m not saying anything, controversy finds me enough” 🤣🤣🤣

Mr H Clark is not appreciated nearly enough by Saints fans. All this crap talk about his lack of obvious muscle does not recognise his body shape or his skill. He's broad and strong, his timing and dual sided coordination is superb and he's fearless. That combination is very hard to play against, even though he isn't fast.

Some of us remember Ian Stewart win 3 Brownlow medals with a very similar body shape (ok, different era) and speed. He was a left footer whose ability to capture the ball in almost impossible situations and somehow get out (left sided advantage) was very hard to stop.

Years ago I had a number of conversations with a former Richmond premiership player in the Tommy Hafey era who played with Stewart after he went to them. He said that even at training when you were about the grab the ball Stewart's left had would appear by magic at the last second and then the ball was gone. He claimed his close contested ability to get the ball was untrainable and unstoppable.

That's how I view Hunter's style and ball control. He has been badly injured a few times, enough for most players to have retired. If he can get another half a dozen injury free games he'll improve even more and no-one will question how critical he is for our success.
Being an older fart, I saw Stewart play a lot, and although Hunter has some very nice skills and played well today, Stewart would eat him for dinner- just aerobically a better player. I would still get Hunter to spend summer with a running coach.

How about the Dees guy putting the ball on the ground instead of handing to our player ( forget who) Should have been an immediate 50. Saw the same in the Giants game I think it was. 50 paid.
The one where there was 4 or so minutes on the clock?
Are we under any obligation to go and pick up the ball?
We should have left it at the Melbourne players feet while the clock continued to count down.

Fascinating way we used Clark today. Attended just one centre bounce and think he lined up forward all day, pushing up to the stoppages. Had 20 and a goal and could so easily have been two.

Hill had a sneaky good game, with

26 disposals
13 marks
6 score involvements
678m-gained
120 fantasy points (2nd-most).

Albeit with

0 contested possessions
0 tackles
0 inside 50’s! 🤣

Hill looked very good I thought. I noticed he seemed to be getting a lot of touches in our back half. His skills looked tidy and his running was as good as it always is. Not sure if he was playing wing or as part of the defensive line. Hill isn't going to all of a sudden develop a contested game. He's always been a runner. If he's not making critical errors he's a valuable player still.

Very very good today and good to give him shoutouts when he plays well because he has been copping it after each loss. Set up a lot of our play today alongside Nas.

Yep, I think he’d love to take that huge ground everywhere with him. So would we as a team probably. Wilson would have loved it.

I don't care if he gets a contested possession, he needs to stop the turnovers, however the longer he went the better he got. The goal in the 3rd was clutch.
I suppose the NAZ and Hill turnovers look worse as they are the playmakers, but shit they open the field when they hit the mark.

I can't remember him making any obvious errors today. The last 2 weekds had him looking cooked. I thought he seemed full of energy and effort today. He's never been my favourite style of player but ewe he plays like that he's super important. So many kicks out of defence stay in our hands because of his extraordinary work rate.

Just landed in Dubai and saw we had a win. (Typical when I leave the country!)

Can someone tell me how my boy Boxshall went?
Wilkie and Butler seem to have had a day out and 3 goals to Keeler.
Mini summary would be appreciated

Box was tough today and did some nice things with some real good disposals. Looks a player to me.

Slightly off topic - apologies.

A good mate of mine played for Saints U19s in the early 70’s and was due to be promoted to the Senior list.

Pre season internal game and was named in the Centre to play on Stewart. Mate started the game well and got 4 or 5 early kicks and thought he was going pretty well. Stewart switched on and started trying. Mate said Stewart got a few kicks and he started to realise he was completely at another level. By the time of the second quarter he said he couldn’t get near the ball and just started to watch Stewart in awe and was mesmerised - reckons Stewart had about 20 disposals by half time.

At half time Stewart had had enough, showered and moved to the grandstand to drink cans and watch the second half.

My mate - turned up for training the next week & when at his locker was politely told his services would no longer be required and could he please clean out his locker!

Macrae comes in however kids like Phillipou , Boxsall and Carroll have now given us some options when needed.
We are slowly getting better and hopefully kids like Travaglia and Wilson develop to be key players for us as well.

Its a bit hard to choose right now.
Carroll and Boxhall both need to get more of the ball, but both did some really impressive and kind of unique things.
Both had 9 pressure acts.
Then we have Garcia who used pure grunt to absolutely dominate the midfield against Frankston yesterday.

With Higgins, Max Hall, and Butler playing like he was today, Henry has some work to do.
