Henry was superb last year at times one of the most importantly players in the side absolute X factor we lack in droves
The recovery is concerning….just like Kings is concerning …..just like ….Dows is concerning…..there’s a pattern here…..concerning!

Ive been involved in umpiring my whole life.

I can tell you the reason they went to 4 umpires has everything to do with prolonging the careers of there senior umpires because there is nothing coming through the ranks and it is 100 percent to blame on the current AFL umpires and the insular bubble they live in.

A senior field umpire who umpires AFL finals will make approx 110-120k for a part time job (travel paid for by AFL)

A senior field umpire who umpires VFL finals will make approx 15k ( travel paid for by umpire)

A senior field umpire at local level will make approx 5k (potentially more if they double triple up on a day)

No offence meant but it's the old story "pay peanuts and you get monkeys". How can a multi million dollar industry put so little $$$ in such an important aspect of the game.

You only have to see the standard at VFL level to see that the umpiring falls away sharply.

I don't know what others experiences are, but mine at local levels were the best umpires were the guys who had played the game at a decent level. Not to suggest others weren't good but the teams respected ex players as they were also the better communicators.

Nearly every Super Rugby referee has played the game at decent levels and the quality shows. How are the AFL going to attract enough ex players if they are paying peanuts.

The other obvious side to being under valued is it opens the door for corruption.

Watching Nth vs WCE it looks like the Eagles dont believe they can beat Nth. Us they believed they could beat. We are less regarded than Nth 😳
They couldn't kick straight. It is hard to win, even against north when you kick 6.16

Obviously it’s always nice to win but these are the types of wins that tease us into thinking we’re closer than we actually are. We can’t seriously think that Steele, Jones and Windhager are going to get us into the top 4 even if you did add Macrae. If guys like Boxshall, Phillipou or Travaglia were playing key roles you’d feel better about it and maybe in a couple of years that will be the case but for now this probably just keeps us closer to no man’s land.

Plenty of positives all over the ground though. Give Keeler a role on someone every week to take the pressure off and he’ll grow.

Umpires don't want to make it their full time job

Their demographic has been wrong historically. A lot of them seemed to be Lawyers with Umpiring as a hobby.
If you are successful Lawyer, you need a lot of cash to quit your day job.
I understand that the AFL are trying to recruit from other area's now.
Leigh Fisher probably exactly the type they should be looking for.

Umpires get from $40 000 to $150000 per year, which is not bad for your "hobby" job.

I dont think there is a single post over these 20 pages thinking those 3 mids are going to take us to premiership glory on the back of this game.

We can enjoy a win for what it is without the 'no mans land' buzzwords appearing and needing to find something to be miserable about.

Wasn’t a saints fan or followed any of this at the time, but he plead guilty to indecent assault + allegations of rape.

‘Milne pleaded guilty to indecently assaulting the woman in a darkened room, with former team-mate Leigh Montagna and another woman nearby.

Prosecutor Mark Rochford SC said the victim believed Milne was Montagna. “The accused was reckless as to whether the complainant was consenting or not to the relevant act,” he told the court.’

Anyway, I’m sure the mods will move to convo along

I was interested in Ross' comment in the post-game press conference that teams had been "keeping us skinny" and that we're worked really hard to break that, and get more into the corridor. So I went back and watched the Melbourne replay with that in mind. Have only watched the first half so far, but what I notice is that our movement from D50 was generally along the wings. We barely went into the corridor, but what we did differently was zig zag up the wing, cutting the angles in and out as we went. By doing that, we were able to avoid going straight down the line, but also avoid what teams have been doing since about round four, which is stationing extra men along the inside of the centre square.

I noticed some chat in this thread about Naz's disposal efficiency this year. Often he's been picked off when trying that kick from the wide back flank into the centre square. Teams have worked that out, so it seems we're ow trying to pick through the space they're giving us on the wing as a result of stacking the centre square. Clever!

Incidentally, the other thing that we were doing well in the first half against the Dees was centre clearances.

Adding to this there were two word on the whiteboard at trading.

Shape
Corridor.

Now this could mean defend the corridor or use it. Regardless at training they were Definetly focusing on the forward handball on the edge of D50. Usually to Sincs or Naz

Was that before the Melbourne game, or this week?

King will be out for an entire year when/if he comes back this year.

That's longer time than a full knee reconstruction.

His twin brother is durable, I thought twins get the same genes?

I am a broken record but we are not serious if we expect blokes to get significantly better with 16 required contact hours a week at the club.

I am sure they are supposed to do stuff outside the club, but who is driving that?

Should be smashing the boys in the gym, relentless skills work. Owens should be having 300 set shots a day.

Next year will be Kings 8th season as an AFL player. He is still too skinny, and appears to have SFA tank.

Does anybody really believe he is doing absolutely everything to come back the best player possible? I am sure he is rehabbing inbetween PornHub and Fortnite, but is he giving it everything to get better?

What is to stop him going out and benching 150kg? You can get huge strength adaptations without putting on too much size. He is pushed off the ball far too easily.

I really can't see any difference since Lyon took over, and we know training standards were poor when he got here.

In all seriousness, this borders on libellous.

Overall, the above post calls for performativeness rather than results. We don't succeed, but some will feel better if at least they are made to work extra hard between games.
