The exact same way that if you take your eyes off the ball for even 1 second, even if you turn back to look at the ball, it is deemed holding the man. This is the same logic.

During Butts v Lynch that led to Lynch being a dickhead, Butts never wraps both arms around, nor takes his eyes off the ball.

Whether the rule is right or not is different to whether the current rules have been correctly applied.

Agree on the Miller incident. I disagree entirely on the Lynch being held by Butts incidents. You are simply not allowed to wrap an arm around an opponent in a marking contest like that. But doing that is one thing. Holding on post contest is a whole new thing and he did it both times. It is certainly possible to hold an opponent with one arm to the extent you would be free kicked for it. Having your eyes on the ball doesn't excuse you from infringing an opponent in contesting the ball, never has, never will. Otherwise you just put hands on your opponent's shoulders and push him down with your eyes on the ball and go for the mark and no free kick. Or chop one arm spoil with your other arm no free kick. It is simply not the case, you have read the rule wrong. You are allowed to bump in a marking contest but not unduly. You are not permitted to hold your opponent at all, end of.

It looks pretty clear the majority of the impact is the inside of Lynch's forearm to the rear of Butts shoulder, any contact with the head is relatively minor.

It looks bad and is a deliberate strike so 1 week for the body strike and maybe give it an extra week because it looks especially bad at first view. But any incident should be taken on its merits. A long suspension for that would just carry on the MRO and Tribunal unblemished record in not dealing properly with incidents where Richmond players get terrible injuries(Lalor) but giving uniquely punitive suspensions for any incident involving a Richmond player that looks bad at first glance but is marginal at best when analysed properly(Mansell.)

The AFL is as bent as a 9 dollar note.
