They’re punishing - and have been punishing - people for slurs like that in all walks of life for a while now (at least in Oz). The fact that there have been multiple, high profile instances in the league this year alone (that have had bans) and it’s still happening tells me that more probably needs to be done.

It’s not like we shouldn’t know we can’t say slurs like that any more.

Not in a workplace and certainly not in a public workplace that is televised nationwide. Especially directed at someone else.

Free Agency has become a joke.

**** the Eagles by all means, but the reigning premier pinching their captain and key forward from a team which won a single game.

Everyone knows Allen's knee is cooked. So they are wishing him all the best and so forth. But its still an ugly part of our game IMO

To me it's a long bow to compare Snoop Dog to what's happening now. It's not hypocrisy. The songs with slurs originate from the 90s and early 2000s when such language was used as a common insult and not always referencing sexuality.

There are no slurs in any recent music that I am aware of, and he has made efforts to change his tone, and work with the LGBT community.

I say this as someone who has no interest in rap music. We shouldn't judge what people did in the past in the context of today's values, which have changed considerably in that time. When those songs were made most people didn't bat an eyelid at the inclusion of those words

It was this time last year people here were saying 'everyone knows Barrass' back is f**cked.'

Yet he seems to be going alright at the Hawks.

OK I admit to being at the upper end of middle age, but to be suspended for a whole finals series for calling someone a ****** just seems ridiculous to me.
If that is to be the penalty I would be threatening legal action if I were Adelaide.

The fact that it will wipe him out of the final series should have nothing to do with it, otherwise you are telling players they can get away with anything in the game or two before finals.

When you could assault someone and get a similar penalty I think it's kind of ridiculous.

But..

1. There's just no need for it, 30 years ago anyone would know its not the right thing to do let alone in today's world.
2. It's not as if the league hasn't made their stance extremely clear with multiple massive suspensions, it's staggering that someone would be so dumb to do the same thing again.

If I was one of the players who copped 4, 5 or 6 weeks for the same thing, I'd be taking legal action if Rankine doesn't get 5 weeks. There shouldn't be a discount because of finals.

I think all these differing punishments are dumb af

Lock in a 1 game suspension, donating a fixed sum to an affected charity and taking a course whenever it happens, that can be the deterrent, make it about education instead.

Maybe the course can be over that week when the player is out, don't let them train for the week too as punishment, just make it completely consistent each time it happens.

Not really, I’m not suggesting that the penalty should be nothing and most would agree that being suspended for a final is a significantly bigger penalty than being suspended for an h&a game.

AFL painted themselves into a corner giving Finlayson, Collard, [PLAYERCARD]Jack Graham[/PLAYERCARD] increasingly long bans.

I've no issue with Rankine getting one in line with that but the problem is before long we'll have season-long suspensions which would be disproportionate with coward punching someone.

They totally underestimated how stupid some players are.

Someone missing a gf might finally get the message across.

AFL will be more than happy to stick it to Adelaide with 5 weeks..whether deserved or not

Reminds me of 2020 when Adelaide missed the finals in last game with the blatant non point score in the last seconds of the game..
Just Another non vic whipping team
Crows finished bottom in 2020

The message is there

People just say dumb shit in the heat of the moment

AFL has underestimated just how rooted some of these phrases are in the community. I'd wager that sometimes insults are said just because they're insults and have gone past the original meaning. The difference between governing from a boardroom and living in reality.

I mean, Clarko copped a 20k fine for saying ********er, like seriously.
