I agree that it doesn't make you racist or homophobic but there are known punishments for using those words. The whole drama is way over the top. A slur doesn't make a person Homophobic or Racist. As a society we are being conditioned to be hyper sensitive. We have so few real problems that we are making all sorts of shit a big deal.
Why is a racist slur the main one? Homosexuality has endured just as much bigotry as minorities.agree 100% but thats the way we are and it's not going to get any better in the future unfortunately. Racist slur is the main one that needs to be dealt with no exceptions but I am a firm believer that what is said on the field stays on the field.
A similar thing happened to one of the couple we are members with, she came out as Lesbian circa 5-6 years ago, her mum, dad, brother, sister in law disowned her at the time, I sent her a lengthy supportive text after I heard about that, they have slowly come around but still frown on affection in front of them and her partner is not invited to all family get togethers, The family do not even know they were married a couple of years ago, her grandparents still do not know she is Lesbian. Why is a racist slur the main one? Homosexuality has endured just as much bigotry as minorities.
What do you think the difference is between the two? It is such a laughably uninformed take to pretend one is worse than the other.
What goes on, on field should stay on field but there is boundaries.
What was your opinion of Zorks dobbing Touk Miller in? Most people agreed that Miller crossed the line.
Do you believe if Rankine was called a racial slur that because it was on field it shouldn't be an issue? Or do you believe that some things said and/or done on field should not stay on the field.
On Monday a friend of my wife's died. He was gay. His family had disowned him for being gay. They refuse to acknowledge him, to the point that now he is dead, they refuse to take any part of his burial. There will likely not be a funeral because there is no one to pay for it. He killed himself because he felt so isolated, so lonely and didn't have the support he needed. I only met him once, he seemed like good guy. My wife did not know him all that well either but had only ever said good things about him. It has come out since that the people (I don't think you can call them friends) he was living with (who were themselves part of the LGBT community) treated him unbelievably badly. They were horrible but because they accepted him for being gay, he suffered in silence because he must have felt like he didn't have anyone to turn to.
So when you say that the racist slur is the main one that needs to be dealt with, which implies you think homophobic slurs are not a worthy issue or worthy of the same importance, all I think is what an absolute ****wit you must be.

This is a girl I have known since she was born(same age as my daughter 38), it has greatly lessened my opinion of her parents who I used to be very friendly with for decades, rarely see them now.
FWIW sexuality coming up in our conversations is extremely rare, just like it is with heterosexual people I know, IMO 99.9% of the population could not care less who people have sex and relationships with.
It doesn't imply homophobic slurs are OK in any way and I would never think anything of the sort. I have several good friends that are gay (men & women). Never in my life have I been accused of downplaying homophobic issues and never will. Your jump to that conclusion is delusional and wrong in major ways. Be careful making accusations like that. Why is a racist slur the main one? Homosexuality has endured just as much bigotry as minorities.

agree. Americans are a somewaht messed up lot. That said, I think the world is slowly improving on homophobic & racial issues all the time. Seems like we move ahead 3 steps and then take one back at times but it is improving I think.Sadly while society as a whole progresses people do not. There are millions of Americans who would love to bring back slavery or to be able to lynch black people with impunity.
Agree and I am NOT singling one out as more important than any others. Simply saying racial issues AFL related have had more situations than other issues to date. Nothing else to read into the post. What's the difference??? Is denigration not denigration? Is something said that meant to demean and hurt not equally bad? Singling out one minority over the other is a very slippery slope.
All of this bullshit needs to stop.
I'm no prude or above slinging shit at my mates, but to single out a feature of someones existence beyond their control as an insult or slur is piss weak. Especially when it's adversarial.
And the millions who now know and have read and heard about all these insults mean NOTHING stays on the field. That idea died when they invented 24hr coverage. And probably should have sooner.
Wait, wait, wait, what?!?agree 100% but thats the way we are and it's not going to get any better in the future unfortunately. Racist slur is the main one that needs to be dealt with no exceptions but I am a firm believer that what is said on the field stays on the field.
"What's said on the field stays on the field" (EDIT: henceforth WSOTFSOTF, to save time and sanity) is a code designed to protect perpetrators.Agree and I am NOT singling one out as more important than any others. I'm fairly sure that if the Suns go 1-1 from the last 2 games they finish 5th-6thIs there a set of results that would see Gold Coast needing to beat Essendon by a certain amount in order for them to finish 8th on percentage?
Yes they would have to lose both games to miss finals, no way in the world they could lose to Essington, win both they have a good chance of finishing top 4.I'm fairly sure that if the Suns go 1-1 from the last 2 games they finish 5th-6th
I hope I dont get called homophobic for not knowing this but please help with it. WSOTFSOTF ???"What's said on the field stays on the field" is a code designed to protect perpetrators.
Time was when racial slurs were just part of the game. What was said on the field stayed on the field, ot least that's how it seemed to the perpetrators. We now know that players suffered greatly due to that abuse, but endured it because of the WSOTFSOTF code.
Homophobic abuse is no different, it's just taking a bit longer to adjust attitudes towards it. There haven't been fewer situations of it, it's just that the WSOTFSOTF code has prevented them being aired and exposed.
"What's said on the field stays on the field" is boring to have to repeatedly write out and read so I abbreviated itI hope I dont get called homophobic for not knowing this but please help with it. WSOTFSOTF ???
as above.I hope I dont get called homophobic for not knowing this but please help with it. WSOTFSOTF ???
My comment of "what said on the field stays on the field" was meant for the players to sort it out and be the mediators. Certainly not for it to be ignored and play on. I think if you talked to more than 90% of players they would all recognise the word he used was totally unnaceptable. Further education and understanding from his team mates that his behaviour was not acceptable will lift that percentage to a higher % for sure.
As above youas above.
I think what history shows is that, if left to the players to mediate, nothing will change. It took a few brave players speaking out and not leaving it on the field for any significant progress being made around racial abuse. My comment of "what said on the field stays on the field" was meant for the players to sort it out and be the mediators.
