There’s no way people are genuinely smoking enough of the bs to think that late firsts blow out to 30+. Unlike what used to happen where all the picks getting wiped out being used on bids were in the 40s and 50s, it’s now picks in the late teens and 20s being used to match bids.

A conservative estimate has picks being pushed back up to 5 spots under the new DVI, including 6 first round talent bids. Gold Coast for example to bid on their 2 boys in the 8 or so, would wipe out 5 natural picks from the top 25. The rest get moved forward. Carlton as well. The days of picks like 19 or 20 blowing out to 30 are long gone when there’s high level tied talent.

In another year where there’s not as many first and second round club tied talent you might be right, but not this year at least
If we get 2x priority picks at the end of the first round that will make it

20 x 1st round picks

Add allan draiper de koning worpol + 4 picks

Add father sons × 2

Add academy
Bris × 2
Gc × 4
Syd × 2
Ess × 2 ?

That will be 34 - 36 first rounders .

Gc and Brisbane will both trade out for the most points possible

Sydney most likely trade their 1st for a player .

Teams will go into points debt

What on earth are you talking about… There are multiple clubs that require extra points to match bids on their talent. Gold Coast need an absolute s**t load, Brisbane need more, Carlton likely require more given they may have a Dean bid come after their compensation pick, Sydney will likely require more picks if they choose to sit on their first rounder. Collingwood need points for McGuane and McCarthy. Essendon will likely have to trade back their early 2nds to get both their boys or risk missing out on them… All these clubs either have to get more, or move their valuable first rounders back to avoid missing out on talent. Do you know what you’re talking about???

I actually do not understand your point is at all. Why would they just give us pick 10? That would be backlash galore for the other 17 clubs, at least giving us valuable points picks doesn’t disadvantage every other club by jumping the queue. They’re helping us and messing up every other clubs draft by doing that, giving us points-based assistance helps us and helps a bunch of other clubs too…
Our 2nd rounder has been a pick in the 30s for the last 2 years running

Where was the outrage with everyone jumping in before us ?

**** all the other clubs

For the love of god whatever we do at the draft don't give up pick 1 or 2 if we get it for anything.

We need the top end talent.

This giving up top 3 picks is ****ed.
Said without any knowledge of the draft, there’s no Harley Reid standout, if we can turn 1 and change into the bombers two pick we do that in a heartbeat.

I know we had a lot of experienced players injured but the Swans had pretty much 3 season on us in age and games played. That’s a big gap, in 3 season time I’d hope we are around that 10 game wins mark.

The interesting part is the messaging out of the Eagles isn’t we don’t want to keep getting younger. Which imo is the right thing. Take the top picks you have in the first round or bundle up ect and use 3-4 picks and get what should be 200 games+.

But with the likely departures of the vets Hunt, Petch, Ryan, Allen, Sheed, Gov and Jamieson it will be interesting to see who we get to bridge a bit of that gap.

Ah Chee, Starcevich have been linked but have stronger links to other clubs from the reporting I’m hearing.

Blight, Reidy, Erasmus, Philips ect are ‘afl ready’ in terms of their bodies but haven’t played a lot at that level so will still have development to go. Definitely could be plug and play and best 23 next year though.

Right now it doesn’t appear like we have the strong links like this time last year with Graham and Baker. The year before Flynn, Brockman and Dev (despite the last minute change of mind)

It seems we don’t leak much which is a good thing but makes for a very interesting off season.

So with Chesser and Newton deserving new contracts (wouldn't have expected this 6 weeks ago) who gets cut?

Should be pushing towards double figure list changes again
Gov (retired)
Sheed (retired)
Ryan (traded)
Oscar (FA)
Hunt
Jamieson
Petch
Barnett (even contracted)
Rawlinson - McCarthy
Livingston - Newton

Other might ask to be traded, B Will, Chesser

What if someone else has more points via better positioned picks There goes that plan hey.

There are 4 clubs with top 10 picks who would look to trade down for points unpgrades.

Gold Coast holds multiple 1st it would trade out for more points.

Brisbane as well with a later 1st.

Carlton with the Dean father son bid around pick 10 to worry about.

Swans with their 1st with bids on King espected around their 1st round pick.

Needs to be a preimum.

Would trade pick 1 plus something else added for the two Essendon 1sts without blinking.

If you understood the top 6 available kids in the 2025 open draft you would as well.

Every draft is different. The Harley draft we said no, we are taking the best kid. Correct call.

Other drafts there is no standouts at 1 or 2, but a very even top 5 or 6.

If the AFL were smart they would simply create and allocate points they can give clubs as assistance that do not compromise the draft any further.

AFL: Assistance for Eagles 4 rookie spots plus 1,000 points it can use to trade in picks for sale.

Other clubs dont get shafted. No prorirty picks pushing other teams down the order.

The points are basically the AFL returning points we have lost over several drafts when our 2nd picks were pushed out 9 or 10 spots because of all the draft assistance it was proving other clubs, clubs playing and winning grand finals.

Edit: The points difference in 2023 pick 19 to pick 30 = 320 points lost.

4 years 4 x 320 = 1280 points lost.

The AFL allocated this "assistance / compo" elsewhere to other clubs who apparently needed it.

Thats just the same as us having pick 20 and trading it away though. No one is shafted there. All 17 clubs have a chance to trade for it after all

The point Obeanie1 is making and it’s a good one, is that an extra pick is not inserted into the draft. Rather, a poorly performed team can outbid other clubs for a particular pick from another another team.

It has a lot of merit.

You're assuming the Academy picks will all be bid on or taken in the 1st round as well as the Father Sons.

Its not as only we gain benefit of receiving points to outbid other clubs.

And no new picks are created so none of the other teams are pushed down the draft order.

And we are just getting back the points / draft position we have lost (forced to give up so the AFL can provide draft assistance to other clubs) over the past three drafts.

Cant get any fairer than that.

So Curnow to the Swans keeps on getting air time.

Swans dont have the draft capital without losing a gun player.

Could Warner be involved to get the Swans the picks needed?
He only signed an extension a couple of months ago

Unlikely but possible.

Lloyd said yesterday for the Swans to get Curnow they would have to give up one of the big 3 in Heeney, Gulden or Warner. 2 are from NSW and I doubt they agree to go to the Blues. Not sure Chad would either, you’d think it’s Sydney or Perth.

They won’t even ask Warner to be traded after signing him.

Warner, Curnow and Pick 1 plus other picks changing hands. Would be it be the right move for all 3 clubs? Definitely the Eagles and the Swans imo. Not sure the Blues would want to go down the rebuild path. Is that the right call? Not sure.

In all honesty if we had pick 1 in a re draft of the 2024 draft im taking Jobe Shanahan with my pick 1....

The kids got some serious talent, we’ve done well extending his contract already too.

Pretty sure we were attemping to trade down the draft to target Shanahan but no clubs were interested. Not sure if it was our 2025 1st on offer.

But yes, an absolute bargain where we picked him.

We need all the luck we can get. Signed to 2028, very happy with that extension.

National Draft:

16. Bo Allan Injuries curtailed his season, any reasonable minded human being (not disaster struck), would be hopeful that he will turn out to be a gem.

30. Jobe Shanahan Looks to be an absolute steal at pick 30 (brilliant job by the recruiting team) an A grade talent

46. Tom Gross Showed a fair bit from limited opportunities (needs a year or 2 in the gym) but could be a long term midfielder for the club

48. Lucca Grego We all love the way he goes about it, should have debuted much earlier in the season from my pov, the coach stuffed that up, jury is out for me on whether he’ll make it

65. Hamish Davis Was outstanding for Claremont in Colts and league, an absolute steal at pick 65, I think he’ll be a 200 game player.

Rookie Draft:

Cat B. Malakai Champion Malakai needs to show a fair bit more in my opinion, has the speed and skills to make it.

McCarthy, what an absolute ripper this bloke is, added something to the team instantly, brilliant footballer.

Newton, showed a bit a small forward, improves our list and has plenty of scope for improvement.

Overall, I think we’ve done very well from the 2024 draft, and mid season draft.

Pick 1 plus our F2nd for Warner?

Swans send 1 and a player to Carlton for Curnow.

Somehow we trade J Williams to a 3rd club and maybe a McDonald gets moved on as well?
I think that’s the right price for Warner when OOC. Might need to be a bit more now he’s signed. All depends if they become the seller.

Blues would likely have Jagga, Duursma, Dean and Walker in 3 drafts so building for the future and would likely trade up in this draft as the Dean bid will come around the TDK compo.

I think Ollie Florent would be off to the Blues as well. If they sacked Voss it might’ve all been possible but will be interesting to see how Wright plays the situation at the Blues.

Imo if Warner didn’t sign maybe this would’ve been good for all parties but I doubt they push him out the door.
