Recap at a glance:
  • Harley Reid has signed a two-year extension, which keeps him at West Coast until at least the end of 2028.
  • He still has one season left on his rookie deal, the new extension kicks in for 2027.
  • Cal Twomey reports that the deal could reach up to $2m per year if Harley triggers all incentives (e.g. this is not a base $2m per year deal).
  • This is a straight two year extension, with no player option for a +9 or anything similar.
  • Get a big dog up ya, Victoria.

What's got the Hawks fans so pissed off today?

You'd think they were the ones with the one win season.

(I guess we've got a two win season now)

They had 2 posters post on there board this morning saying they had inside word that Harley was requesting a trade to hawthorn😂

So this season has sort of reinforced that players don't move clubs that often. The incumbent club will always have the upper hand.

When contract time comes up, most will stay put unless they are a fringe player looking for more opportunities, older player again looking elsewhere for a final push or being pushed out by their club, or other extenuating circumstances.

This whole situation should be a confidence booster that the club knows how to treat it's players off field (especially young guys from other states).

Look at this copium:

It’s good for him but holding the club to ransom and hoarding all that cash from the club and the rest of the playing list is pretty selfish stuff in my opinion. Good on him and his management for extracting what they did, but he’s yet to prove anything, and I can’t help but feel this could work out terribly for WC.

Of course we would have paid a lot which is the price you may for getting a player to break a contract, but this doesn’t feel like a win for the eagles.

So had a browse of the Hawks thread, and judging from the deleted posts it's not like we were covering ourselves in glory. If the reverse occurred we'd also happily ban them. Some was a bit over the top and they are allowed to amuse themselves with saying we sure are partying hard for a one win team.

Would rather we celebrate, brag and gloat here rather than antagonise Hawks fans, many of which are actually pleased we retained Harley Reid.

Still, we should definitely tag The Big Dipper until he shows up here again with receipts egg on his face.

Can't believe Ralph just took the piss out of McClure on MWT just now re; Reid's contract.
That was hilarious. Hope someone gets that couple minutes recorded and posted on here.

Paraphrasing he said Harley loves being at the club, loves playing for the club, loves playing under and has a great relationship with McQualter and his management were also both glowing of the club, the list manager, how the club's handled the situation and the negotiations, a cordial back and forth but at the end of the day Harley always wanted to re-sign here

Love this.

'Hoarding cash'.

It's a 2 ****ing year contract, not a 20 year one.
Yeh but think of all the other superstars on the list who will miss out because of this!

(Do some people not realise that in addition to a salary cap, AFL teams have a salary floor? Goodness knows how we'd reach the floor without Harley to soak up some $$)

Didn't even mention Vic clubs having a crack in a few years when raised by McFarlane, just said WCE see him as a long term player.

Came here to mention this

Can’t stand Ralph but he was surprisingly glowing in his praise for the deal and how we went about it

Particularly liked what he relayed about Reid’s manager praise which is encouraging since the same manager also handles Chesser who I’d like to keep
