Must be heavily in to Starcevich

This is a perfectly reasonable thing for the Eagles to be requesting. The dumb AFL system of granting picks immediately following your own pick leads to bad clubs losing solid players. Like North had no interest in keeping Ben McKay because obviously having pick 3 (which became pick 4 after the Jed Walter bid) is more valuable to a rebuilding club than keeping a 25 year old defender. Same with Oscar Allen, the dumb system basically incentivises the Eagles to lose one of the few good players they still have. And then, miracle of miracles, a pretty good player (Starcevich) might actually want to come play for the worst team in the comp, but the system provides a disincentive for signing him because if the penalty for signing him is losing the #2 pick, then it's not worth it. You're basically telling the Eagles "pull yourselves up by the bootstraps" but your dumb system, without any allowances, causes them to let Allen walk for nothing besides draft compensation (which is far from an immediate fix) and also causes them to avoid signing a player like Starcevich, who can help make a dreadful club more competitive right now.

Did the Waterman brothers cross over with us?
Alec was delisted at the end of 2016, Jake was drafted that year.

I have a faint recollection that there was some thoughts that Jake considered not joining the Eagles because Alec was delisted, but that may be just a faulty memory.

Also, why leave a solid squad who has just added Curnow to go to the 1 win team? Stay for 2 years, get a flag, then jump on Eagles on the way up.
This is what is best for both clubs .

We load up on high end draft picks before tassie comes in .

We then get our turn to cash in on free agency

Think there was scuttlebut that he wasn't happy. Not sure how real considering Alec had chronic fatigue and wasn't sure he'd every make it back to full fitness.

Alec never played a game for us though. Glandular fever pretty much scuttled him from the start. Much sadness, because I had high hopes for him in those early years.

Guess it counts. On the list.
As far as WCE is concerned:
Wally and Peter Matera
Wally and Phil Matera
Mitch and Cale Morton
The O’Connell brothers (Michael and David) were both on our list in 1988 but never played a game together.

That’s all I can think of.
I knew that one would get you going ;)

Why would Brisbane be happy with this ? They get nothing because they got Oscar.

Let's just throw them hawks 2nd and 3rd for starcivich and ahchee and not bother the afl with something this trivial.

Put more effort into getting priority picks

Brisbane would need to have a brass neck to complain about missing out on th prospect of getting something for free agent Starcivich after their recent run of F/S's, getting Allen for nothing and picking up another top 5 Academy kid this year.

I just don't like the idea of Starcevich in general.

No dilution of our FA allowing us to recruit someone else is good, sensible thing to request, i like that idea.....

But knowing it's for a C grade half back with concussion problems who averages 10.8 disposals a game, has never been AA or even in the AA squad and has never polled a single bronwlow vote makes the whole thing seem silly.

Just keep playing Grego.

Starcevich averages in 2025 - 10.8D, 3.7M, 1.8T, 3.4CP's, 3.1 rebound 60's, 3.9 intercepts, 199 metres gained.

Grego averages in 2025 - 14D, 5M, 1T, 6CP's, 5 rebound 50's, 5 intercepts, 235 metres gained.
Argued this with some Bris fan in another board. There’s genuinely 4 or 5 guys I’d rather get games into than play Starvevich. Grego and Bo most importantly. I’d rather play those 2 all of next year over Starcevich and Cole

Makes me wonder if we're pulling a switcheroo. Ask for this, get granted it with everyone assuming it's for Starcevich, but then trade for him and bring in a different free agent. Question is, who's available?

Still not near enough list spots available for the draft and rookie listings. So surely more cuts to come, unless we are miraculously granted extra list spots.
With the addition of T-Mac & Newts, we only have 5 spots overall to fill.
You'd think we'll be looking at 4-5 players in the draft, plus a few F/S and NGA players. That's without addition of any traded in players or FA's.
Would be likely to bring in a minimum of 7 players up to 10, which is a pretty normal haul.
Perhaps 8 from the draft/rookie listings and 2 from trade/FA.
So at least a minimum of 3 players left to be cut.
Out of those, Chesser, Cole, Champion and Cripps almost guaranteed to be extended. Livingstone most likely to be delisted.
Could Crippa retire to make way? Perhaps Chesser left it too late to save his career? Ryan rumoured to be looking at other options.
As much as a lot of us would like to see it, it's unlikely Owies will be cut with 2 years still to run on his contract.
There are still options to delist players contracted for next year, like Barnett and Johnston.
I don’t think there’s be many teams in history that have turned over 10 spots on their list…

If WCE wait until the PSD, then Starcevich has to wait until nearly December before he can be at the club.

He can join the club immediately once he's a free agent.

This is the main reason clubs don't want to use it.
Like two players of any consequence have gone in the PSD in the last decade. There was Jack Martin, who only went after he tried to get traded by Gold Coast, was held to his contract, played another season there, and tried to get traded again (but a trade wasn't successfully worked out). The other was Jackson Hately, who wanted to get back to Adelaide and no trade was worked out. Adelaide picked him up but it turned out that he sucked.

Clubs don't use the PSD because they don't like getting a reputation of trying to steal good players off of other clubs' lists for nothing.

STK - Ryan
GEELONG - Marshall
WCE - Geelong First

Balance it out with some pick swaps
If we are making this deal let's do it with the stipulation that Geelong will actually pick the player and then trade him to us, since there's a lot lower chance of them stuffing it up than if we make the pick ourselves.

What if its the player wants out driving it . Hard to say no to a free verge pickup

I agree. I don't know why we are chasing Starcevich. He is no star. Just a bog standard back flanker when we are overstocked with young prospective back flankers.

I think the club is panicking a bit and looking for any 23 - 27 year old who will come here to help fill the demographic hole on our list and help McQualter not have a team that is 85% kids. But the risk is we import a load of list clogging filler that doesn't move the needle at all.

I think that mostly applies to R2 onwards.

Their R1 drafting history of recent seasons isn’t great, but they continue to find quality players late
