You reckon Vic clubs backed off to head off the possibility the AFL introduced priority access to WA talent for WA clubs?
…which i’m not opposed to if WA clubs are given the opportunity to invest in talent pathways!
It would certainly help them at the moment.
If the Eagles didn't have to choose between Reid and Curtin and could have used those rules to get both of them among others, they would be in a stronger situation right now. Ditto with the dockers.

That would be a useful AFL draft concessions to help the Eagles right now, rather than another random selection or whatever else they’re asking for.

Call me ignorant, but I don't understand why this is even a story or why a player has to 'come out' in 2025; I mean so what. Do people really care what anyone's sexual preference is these days when it doesn't matter what anyone's sexual proclivity is when it has no bearing on anyone else? Hell Ian Roberts in the NRL was a beast and I dont think too many gave two shits about his sexual proclivities.

I kinda feel when announcements like this are made, a large part is commercially motivated.

Given there had been 0 active of former AFL players to come out before today I think it means something!

I don't think Mitch Brown is making any money out of this at all, lol.

I agree with the gist of your post in that the massive majority of people in general could not give two hoots who any adult has sex with.

I do and have known multiple gay people and the topic of sex rarely comes up just as it doesn't for the heterosexuals I know.

But why does he even need to 'come out', big deal. Is it anyone's business or does one need to 'come out' if they sexually inclined in some werid and wonderful way, which again I would say, big deal, its no ones business what anyones sexual proclovity is or are you saying it is because one isn't hetrosexual and theerfore, if your not, it needs to be announced to world?

He doesn't need to, but I'm glad he did. There are a lot of people struggling with their sexuality who might feel supported by this.

There is no need for someone to come out as heterosexual as there isn't a culture where you feel shame for being heterosexual.

Because it is part of acceptance both for the person 'coming out' and those that know (or know of) that individual.
It is an important part of dealing with fear and / or shame of having lived a life of secrecy.

I heard Dani Laidley give a talk about it which was helpful in understanding what life is like for non-hetero people before 'coming out' publicly.

If you read the article you can see why it's relevant.

Silence allows cultures that stigmatise some people and make them hide away part of themselves to perpetuate.

Visible representation reduces that stigma and helps the culture change.

If I told you there was a workplace with over 400 employees and not one of them identified as gay, you would be within your rights to assume that there was some pretty deep seated cultural homophobia at play.
The AFL virtue signals by condemning various words.
But when there is not one AFL footballer who feels safe enough to admit his sexuality, I must conclude that there is a deep seated cultural homophobia in the AFL.
In the light of that, I welcome Brown’s statement.
It would be wonderful if these young men felt free enough to be open about their sexuality.

Would like Essendon to win
Either it's historic, with the first Suns final series, or hilarious, with the ultimate Suns late season collapse.
