Lost opportunity for the SANFL to play Glenelg-Crows on Friday night. Going forward they should review their finals scheduling if the Crows or Power are in the AFL finals and also alive in the 2s. Friday night or Saturday afternoon SANFL finals should be considered under those circumstances if it works better with the AFL scheduling. I guess it gets a little tricky if the QF and EF are on different days in terms of the break leading into the semi-final weekend (and similarly for the 1st and 2nd semi-finals heading into the PF weekend), but in this instance the loser of the QF would have the extra break, which would be well-deserved against the EF winner.
All on Sunday means they can plan ahead with scheduling and use of AO.
How are the SANFL to know if AO is going to be used on a Friday night or anytime Saturday until the final round has played out and the AFL has done their dodgy scheduling?
Surely you can see it’s much less of a clusterf*** if it’s always at a time with a certainty of being clear of AFL needs.

On another note, of the AFL finalists (assuming Bullflogs don’t make it), only Adelaide, Hawks, Brisbane, Collingwood and GWS have their reserves playing finals.
*Theres a hitch to this as the VFL have a wild card round where Collingwood and GWS both got knocked out.
In effect it’s Ad, Bris & Hawks

Power and Crows play in both competitions - it wouldn’t kill the SANFL to be a little flexible with finals scheduling if it helps two of their member clubs win an AFL flag. Ditto for player eligibility - it’s ridiculous that Draper can’t play on Sunday if he’s not in the selection frame for the AFL QF. AFL flag would be huge for footy in SA which at least indirectly benefits the SANFL too.

But you’re right, it’s completely unreasonable for the SANFL to do something that would make no material difference to their finals series other than reward a team that finished higher on the ladder with a longer break than their lower-ranked opponent in the 1st SF (that problem, if in fact it is one, could at least in part be avoided by playing the EF on Saturday rather than Sunday).
Very naive.

The AFL pre-finals bye at least gives the SANFL flexibility in week 1 to schedule games whenever they want. And I’m only suggesting that the SANFL consider changing their rigid Sunday approach in the years when the Crows or Power are alive in both competitions. Obviously doesn’t matter a f$&@ if the 2s don’t qualify for finals.

And you’ve just pointed out that this is a year when perhaps the Crows can take advantage of being alive in both competitions against their other opponents - would be nice to ram that advantage home as much as possible.

Very patronising.
Coming from someone with less than 100 posts in 4 years.

Anyway, the SANFL finals structure has been this way for as long as I can remember, and it works.

They arent going to change their structure to suit 2 clubs who don't really want to be there, and dont pull big crowds.

Again, it provides certainty, everyone knows what to expect every year. Your suggestion will totally screw up having the double header final which I’m sure is a good cost cutting exercise and efficient use of AO.
If they ever go to a home final system then maybe it would be worth changing.

Not sure why that’s relevant but wasn’t intending to get into a s$&$-slinging conversation so I’ll leave it at that.

I get the scheduling certainties, cost efficiencies, etc. of the Sunday double-header but there might be some creative ways to get around some of that. Glenelg could have hosted the Crows down at the Bay on Friday night to avoid the ridiculous costs of playing at AO for example. And suburban grounds almost work better for the early finals in terms of expected crowd numbers and the atmosphere that’s generated compared to a 3/4 empty AO.

Anyway, was just raising it as a discussion point; perhaps it isn’t something others are too fussed about, but I would have loved to see Max get a full game in ahead of the QF. Rather than having to manage his time in a game 4 days out from an AFL final.

Hopefully this lad plays on Sunday, keen to have a look at him in what would only be his second league game after his debut last weekend, had heard some whispers about him earlier this year when playing in the reserves down Glenelg this year, cousin of Kozzy.

Got another mention on gettable from Twomey, so there must be some teams keeping close tabs on him.

From what Marty said on SEN this morning I don’t think he’s going to Port
I'd heard rumours that Port were after all 3 of Surjan, Mattner and Darren Reeves to fill out Carr's staff, but Reeves and Mattner are both contracted to their SANFL clubs until 2026 and maybe both are being held to their deals? I dunno if SANFL senior coaches have "AFL out" clauses or not.

Youd think they would.

I've always thought Marty was more than comfortable being a SANFL senior coach
