Watch Petch do well with Carlton. I'm sad we didnt give him one more year under McQualter. I know most disagree with me and thats fine but I think we didnt use him well enough when he was not injured. We didnt settle him in the fwd pocket and we never tried him off HB, where he couldve been a damaging running HB.

Petch would never get a game for us at Hb. We have a lot of players vying for that position.

Small forward, yeah probably could have got some games this year but was never the future for us in that position.

I wish him well, but he was no longer a good fit for our list (age, position, skill set).

Chesser - the opposite. We need to recontract asap

If other clubs are offering him more than the club they are at, then the club is lowballing them. You're paying for future performance not past.
You're paying more a lot of the time because other clubs pay more to drag players out of clubs. The manager uses it as leverage to the current club.

We can't expect Chesser to sign for one year if a club in his home state is offering two years. We will have to make it a two year offer. But maybe he just wants to go home anyway. If he does i would be pretty hard nosed with Carlton. We have invested a fair bit into Chesser and gotten not much return at this point. They will have to give us something of value in return, not a token late draft pick which is probably what they are planning to offer. I am prepared to take the risk of losing him for nothing to the PSD if it backfires.

Mitch Cleary reported we have offered 2 years.

He is from NSW. Not sure why he played for Vic Country (maybe all Albury boys do?) but assume he boarded as went to Melbourne Grammar. So that could have something to do with it?

Is this a bad thing? I know we have a lot of young players with none or very few AFL pre seasons under their belt, but we looked unfit against the likes of GWS and Gold Coast during the season. Our last halves this year were horrible.

To be fair Innes main focus should have been getting players on park, not fitness. So in that, the job has been done admirably.

After about 8 years I think more than glimpses was required!

Victorian clubs seem to benefit from the “go-home factor” from players who come from well across the NSW border.

Maybe he just wants to go home. Thats what it is starting to sound like. But from our point of view he is a first round pick who we have put 4 years and 40 games into. They will have to offer something decent in return.

Carlton aren't chasing him because he is a star. They are chasing him because he is a handy player they think they can get basically for free.

The issue is that it's not like he was an exception. There are a series of players around his age bracket that were drafted and did not develop. Is that because a whole heap of them were no good or was it our environment wasn't conducive to getting the best out of young players.

I am not disagreeing but do you have any examples as none spring to my mind?

Hope Jobe doesn't become one of them.

Jacob Hopper is the main one I was thinking of.

100% agree on Chesser and yeah, Petch's chance at HB are now over. But for years I have been saying to my mate, I wish we would give Petch a chance a HB. That ship has def sailed now. HB is definitely not an issue for us. One of the few postitions we dont have to stress about.

And this is the problem, it became obvious that he was worth persisting with and we left him hanging (are we short on cash, no).

If we lose Chess that is a YUGE L on our off-field team.
Should have got pen to paper the moment it became clear he had turned a corner (I always thought he had showed glimpses when he played).

West Coast still seem oblivious to how ruthless and switched on the rest of the footy landscape has become, someone was always going to pounce and jump in on a ln unsigned 1st rounder who ha snow been rehabbed and got some games under his belt. They know he will costs little at the trade table.
Bit harsh, chesser hasn't played that well since he was 16. They would've been expecting him to break down again. If he had been extended and gotten injured you would've been up in arms about that

Our soft tissue injury rate seems to have improved significantly since he arrived. Whether part of that is because of the list becoming way younger is an open question.
