List Mgmt. Welcome Campbell Chesser (Pick 14, 2021 National Draft)

I like the kid, 5XL castore guernsey and all, but if he goes back is it really the end of the world?

Yeah he showed the first signs after some really long and drawn out injuries but it’s not as if he’s a certain future AA.

I’d be mildly disappointed, let’s say that. Four weeks ago he was unlikely to even be on the list. Things change.

I think this is overrating Chess by a fair amount.

His last 4 weeks was solid not spectacular.

If you wanted me to be critical I would say he still went missing for long periods. He has an athletic profile, but not sure he has a footy brain.

I’d like him to stay but think it is probably still 50/50 that he is a solid role player or list clogger
This is an on the money post

Were did I say it was spectacular though?

I said he looked an above average wingmen, it’s the circumstances that make it impressive.

There were times he went missing, this happens playing on a wing though. The times would typically coincide with the ball being stuck on the other side of the ground for long stretches.

I’d say if he stays fit he is a borderline lock to be a solid role player in the future with the potential to be a very good outside mid, look at the wingmen around the league and he makes most teams based on his recent form.

Have a look at what Weller, Cumming, Dambrosio, Omeara, Ohalloran, have produced this season from a wing in far stronger teams this year.

Its not going to make or break our rebuild, 2 months ago we were thinking delist, but it would be annoying nonetheless.

Invested alot of time into the guy and for him to go after his best month of footy would be typical of the deep hole the footy clubs in at the moment.

The timing of it doesnt help us at all because that last month of footy won't particularly up his value. We needed at least half a season of that for him to be worth something. Carlton will be eyeing a cheap pick up and our bargaining position won't be strong. If we have a choice between pick 50 odd and chesser you would just stick with chesser, but if he wants to go the trade will happen.

How is having to keep him for potentially 3 years a better outcome? He might turn out well, but he was still delist fodder halfway through the season.
I was always on team 1 more year for Chesser, especially if he stayed healthy for the second half of the year which he did.
He showed enough in the last month that i believe hes far more than delist fodder.
i think he will be a starting wingman for us next year if he stays, and will be long term
Is it really worth it to trump Carlton's offer?
I say yes

Yeah you didn’t say spectacular, but that’s probably just the easiest phrase to describe his last few weeks.

I love your optimism, I’m just not fully there with you.

He looks like he actually has a place in Minis team and game style in the 4 games he played after being injured all year. Would much rather keep than a pick in the 30s+ which is what it will be.

Yes he was delist fodder midway through the year, but he hadn't played in the new Mini game plan yet. When he got a shot he looked immediately more comfortable at the level than he ever has. That confidence could see him improve further quite quickly next year.

Another 18 year old isn't going to move the needle on the next few seasons but a 23-25 year old Chesser playing good footy would.

Played 36 interrupted games, is 22, a solid built midfielder with pace (dudes got wheels!)
A full preseason under Mini's new crew, nearing the magical 50 game mark, is the right age group. Already looks to offer more than Hall albeit a different role.
Keep him, a safer bet at this stage of becoming a consistently solid player, than turning into a lemon. He has more upside than any of Carlton's 2nd fiddles, especially after the Owies sting.
He'll stay, Carlton's not going anywhere soon.

Okay, but what it took 3 years to convince him not to go Carlton?
Do it then
Seemingly the offer is already currently 2 years.
At that point, I'd comfortably let him go, a decent-ish pick would be good bonus.
We wouldnt get a decent-ish pick.

We would get a 2nd round onwards pick which will be pushed back by academies and stuff, and we wont even use as we have limited list spots to draft players, or if its a future pick we are waiting a year.
Hes also in the ideal age cracket we need players in now, at 23 for the start of next season with a mature body

I would take Chesser over any of 2025/2026 2nd rounders from Carlton - theyve got Brisbanes 2nd rounder this year which will be in the 40s, or next year we wont know until they announce whats happening with matching academy kids

We probably dont even get one of those 2nd rounders tbh

Everything is relative and most of what you said can apply to our whole list apart from a few.

Solid but not spectacular, apart from Harley Reid, Ginbey and maybe Shanahan who would you say had spectacular seasons or even a 4 week stretch? Even those 3 to say they were spectacular at any point of the season is a stretch.

Goes missing for long periods? Apart from Baker and maybe Duggan who doesn't go missing for large stretches?

For me Chess has performed remarkably considering he has been injury riddled over a number of years and when fit was put back into the one of the worst AFL sides in history and showed something. I'd say he was our best young player over his last four weeks apart from Ginbey and Shanahan.

Offering him 3 years based on a 4 game streak would be mental and could very easily backfire. I'm ok offering 2 years but equally a F2 is fair value. He was picked at 14, value has drastically decreased. We'd be looking at something like pick 24 in a much stronger draft if we got Carlton's F2.

That's a decent return for player who was a likely delist 2 months ago.

I follow the same sentiment as most on here. Hope he re-signs and goes on with what he showed in the month.

I want to say that I would understand if he left given where we are at and how the contract offer transpired but I just can’t. The two Vic teams he is considering are currently a rabble. The best player on each team Curnow and Merrett are itching to leave and both are under contract. On the flip side, our best player and one of Chesser’s best mates just extended.

Also, if Rhino is correct and the contract offers are similar then he isn’t leaving for money (if they offered more years or coin then fair enough).

So the only two reasons he could leave would be to simply play in Victoria or maybe a relationship breakdown - maybe with Mini? But Mini seems to like him. Weird one!

If he does leave then Duursma will slot nicely on one wing as an upgrade and hopefully Dewar/Hutch/Allan have a big preseason on the other wing.

I said as a bonus, I wouldn't sign him up to anything more than 1-2 year deal based on what's he's produced.

The club needs t hold to its limits and not be pressed now others are sniffing.

2 years seems very reasonable to me given the output so far. Anything more and the club is over committing.

At very best he'll be a 12-16th best contributor. Not going to be an end of world scenario if he leaves.

The main thing is the club does not overpay as the risk of it not paying off is same as the risk of it paying off.

I have doubts he makes it, however an injury plagued player with this age profile and games experience is a a risk to pass on. Lots of players have launched from this position. It's why I wouldn't be against recruiting Deven Robertson for something like a third rounder.
