Conversely, if they do change the rules and clubs can’t match bids inside the top 10 for example then those early picks start looking highly valuable
Yep which we will know before the trade period.

Talked to someone close to the club who has good mail, sounds like Pick 1 for an F1 next year. Pick 2 to Carlton for 10 and 21. 10 on Farrow and 21 for Starcevich. Motlop maybe involved.

So pick 1 for a future 1st?

That would obviously involve more. A lot more.

Something that hasn't reall been brought up is the Harley and Yasmin break up. If Harley did the dirty or similar and got caught out then that does potentially throw a spanner in the works for drafting Willem.

I'm not against the Willem, Sharp combo and I do think Willem has improved his game since the champs to be the most likely open pool pick 1, there's just some serious concerns.

First and foremost is a couple of years from now Vic teams will come with ridiculous offers and I don't want 2 young players taking up 4 mill of the clubs salary cap just to keep them.

The second is the potential Harley/Duursma issue (they seemed close but it's just something that plays on my mind)

Whilst I think Willem is the best of the 3 brothers and also the most versatile the family history is a slight worry.

I do however think with his size, versatility and athletic profile that unless a godfather offer comes through WCE will select him at pick 1.
I find it interesting that people just assume that families get along famously. What if Willem thinks his sister is kind of annoying and sides with Harley?

Would take either or both if Davies and Erasmus. Would prefer Davies.

Both highly rated in a tight and tough final

People keep saying that Davies is a non starter, but selling the narrative of playing with Harley Reid and rocketing up the ladder is a very compelling argument

Hopefully in the WAFL. I'm not saying Graham is an amazing midfielder and that we don't need better midfielders...but we do need better ones than Acres to replace him.
Also you might want to look at the stats you're scoffing at re: Graham, for our team he was actually 2nd behind Harley in clearances per game and 5th in disposals per game with 3 defenders and Baker in front of him.
Graham, like Baker is willing to put his body on the line and give everything of himself regardless of his own self preservation. If we had a whole team of him we would've won five+ games

The whole Davies wanting to leave was to get game time . I doubt he leaves after forcing he way into the side
True but every draft has more freebie top midfielders coming through. Until they remove the insane advantages northern clubs have, we should be able to snipe their quality players, they have too many fill a best 22

Saints update and comments that Marshall to Cats is likely their 1R pick.

NWM: $2,000,000 x2
TDK: $1,700,000 x 7
JSOS: $850,000 x 4-5
Aleer: $800,000 x 4
Ryan,$600,000 x 3-4

That is an incredible shopping bill, something has to shake loose and it’s probably their depth or younger players looking for opportunity.

Chase the young players but otherwise a Ryan-Marshall-Cats R1 is a fair three way trade.

He's the bloke that claimed he got WCE Owies. So basically worse than Hitler.

Balanced out by going full Clark Griswold after opening his Christmas bonus at Nizzy. Like Clark, he also somehow kept his job and later kicked our list manager out of the room during trade week before retiring to Whore Island.

And people believe him 🤣

Agreed.

Unless it's someth8ng like Essendons pick 5 plus their F1st.

Or Richmond.

Blues can just go find someone else to rip off.

Pick 1 for pick 5 and F1 from Bombers is still unders IMO. If they have any brains they will trade Merrett to the Hawks for Carlton’s pick and their F1 and they’ll easily be able to deal for pick 1.

Pick 1 and our F2 for pick 4 and Richmond’s F1 I’d do, but they wouldn’t.

We are all impatient to see some improvement. But what if our recruiters just genuinely don’t rate this draft and are super keen on next year. If we had a crystal ball and there was a Harley/Daicos/Ashcroft waiting for us next year or we would end up with a Will Phillips or Zane Duursma this year, then we would all be happy to wait.

But it’s a hard sell without knowing, and a big gamble as we’ve seen with Hawks picks this year ending up worse than anticipated. Would have to be a team we are certain will finish bottom four next year which is pretty much Richmond.
The problem is we never seem to rate the top end of a draft.

Chasing quantity over quality and rating low production athletes with upside over guys that know how to regularly find the football.

Assuming Allen nets us #2 we have the perfect opportunity to grab 2x high end talents. And with our list + points + negotiating position (our capacity to bid early, or not) we absolutely should be box seat for 7/8 (GC pick).

Whether this draft is as good as 2003 or not really doesn’t matter, as we have continually made high end talent a future problem and the results are proving that is the wrong strategy

Like Anderson and Rowell - does that make a difference?

Yes it's easy to say we have holes all through out our list and need/chase quantity, but it's quality we need.

Keep picks 1 & 2 and pick the best available.

Do we really believe Ryan is worthy of a R1 pick, albeit a late R1 that’s likely to drift out to something in the late twenties?

I know he’s contracted so we hold that advantage in negotiations and the Saints are offering him good money, but he’s a 29 year old with a significant injury history who averages barely more than a goal per game

Alex Neal-Bullen was traded for pick 28 last year and Peatling was a F2. Bailey Smith was a late R1 plus a late R2

If Ryan was a FA he might get us Band 3, more likely Band 4.

In that trade scenario we’d need to be sending something back imo. Expecting Clark to get a R1 pick for Ryan is setting him up to fail

Eagles shouldn't be looking to move on pick 1, except for an exceptional offer, and wouldn't move on pick 2 unless it involved a pick no lower than the Gold Coast's Pick 6 (port) or StKilda pick 7.

What we should be doing is looking at looping lower picks together with the Ryan and probable Chesser trades to get up again, with the Port pick or StKilda pick being a target. Both Essendon and Richmond have strong draft hands with low incentives to trade.

It involves more effort to screw up this trade and draft period, so simplicity should be the key.

Disclaimer: I want to keep 1 and 2 ideally. Just take the best available.

But...

Give
WC - Pick 1 or 2* + Haw R1 + Chesser (if he's off, if not, Haw R3)

GC - Walter + Pick 7

Carlton - Curnow + Acres (a friend for Owies!)

Get
WC - Walter + Pick 7 + Acres

GC - Curnow

Carlton - Pick 1 or 2* + Haw R1 + Chesser (or Haw R3)

Who says no?

The Pick 1 or 2 depends who Carlton are keen on - and ideally it syncs with who we are keen on - say they want Dursmaa and we are Sharpe (or whoever, I am no draft expert).

GC motivated to sell the Pick 7 obviously.

We end up with Walter, another top 10 Pick and retain 1 or 2.

Yes, taking the piss with Acres but let's face it, it could happen.

Thoughts?

The Anti Splitters are out and about in force this year again.

So in three of the last 4 drafts we have split our 1st.

This year we will likely hold picks 1 and 2. Plus 14 and 19.

We will split one of those top picks. Nothing surer.

And everyone knows it.
Yep last 4 years have been great for us 👍
