List Mgmt. Welcome Campbell Chesser (Pick 14, 2021 National Draft)

I think out of context that makes sense. In context, he played for a team where the only two consistent players finished 1st and 2nd in the bnf. Harley finished third and I don't think many would describe his season as consistent. Liam Ryan finished 7th.

The truth is four half decent games at West Coast puts you in the top 15 players and an automatic selection.

I think it’s mostly fomo.
Reality is he was mostly poor in the wafl and even in his best 4 weeks with us to end the season he had his typical MIA periods for 2 quarters of a game.

I’d prefer we kept him, but it’s not moving the dial on our rebuild let’s be real. Should we take duursma I much prefer he gets mins over chess.

All that being said I want the club to be pricks this off season and make it hard on Carlton and saints.
It’s massive fomo, also mixed with the fact that our list can afford to carry some crabs if they actually have high ceilings which you’d have to argue Chesser’s athletic profiles and our lack of pace says he does.

Go back to May and say we’re offering Chess a two year deal. Riots, even from those (like me) who would still keep him.

Go back to May and say he’d be gifted the final four games of the year after poor WAFL form. You’d think we’re hoping for a Hail Mary to save his career or hoping someone else gets tricked into taking him.

As it goes, he took that chance and played the best month of footy in his career. Not elite footy, but enough flashes to go maybe there’s something to work with here.

If we’d been offered a top 40 pick for him two months ago, 99% of the board would have raced to accept it. Now after four games were a bit pissed it won’t be a pick in the top 25 (with stuff going the other way). Fomo and tribalism is a powerful drug.

The part I’m having most trouble with is working out actual trade value given the weird circumstances.

I keep ending up with another player

They don’t have a lot to offer and won’t want to dip into the future picks.

Hawks first and Chesser for a few picks upgrade in the first is farcical.

23 (End of 1st Silvagni compo)? Too high. Maaaaaaybe 35 and Chess for 23 if we get the right dickhead on the phone, but highly unlikely. (Assumes FA compo for Allen, Draper, Carlton x2).

Carlton currently hold 33 and 44. 44 can **** off for a bloke we have a two year deal in front of and Carlton claim is B22. 33 seems unders given the first round alone is going 25+ picks.

I think it’ll be a wait and see on Carlton finishing all their other business, and see what they have to deal with, then settling on something that starts high 20s low 30s and ends where it ends. Would like a future pick over that, but Carlton have points needs next year so unlikely to bail.

Not much loyalty for a club who stuck by him in hard times, but that's footy.
I don't agree with this line of thinking.

You can't blame him for the injuries he had, and West Coast persisted with him as an investment not out of loyalty.

It's also fair to say that his development has been stifled by roles and opportunities.

When you leave a contract renewal offer to the final few weeks of the season, it doesn't demonstrate that your club has much faith in you. For all we know, his mindset might be "I just scraped in but I'm going to be next on the chopping block" which may make other opportunities look more favourable to extend his career.

I'm not saying that either party is in the wrong, but it's an unfortunate set of circumstances.

this does feel very much like a last hour of the trade period filler with a whole heap of messy swaps

Seems nobody is willing to mention the player we really should be targeting from Carlton... :smirk:

There are two categories:

1. Those that havent worked out who the West Australians are on the list yet.

2. Mentioning them is like cheating on Deven. We need at least 5 years or yearning for them before we can accept them.

In addition to Dean who’s tipped to be pushing towards the draft’s top 10, Carlton also have Ison as an academy pick. As others have noted they’ll be planning for Walker next year. So I doubt they’ll be wanting to hand over first or second round picks this year or next.

I just had a look at their VFL side to see if there is some talent floating around there. Jesus wept!

Moir’s re-signed and just started to show something, I can’t see any chance they hand him over. Mitch McGovern turns 31 in a little over a month’s time and has had plenty of injury problems. I suspect we’ll take Motlop.

Call me wrong, I have been many times before, but wasn't alone in that 'line of thinking'.
I did say 'that's footy' i.e-the biz. Am not blaming him for injuries and WC certainly persisted with him as an investment not loyalty - I didn't say contrary to that? Chesser could've shown more loyalty to WC backing him in as an investment during his injuries, and clearly the club was hoping for that going on Mini's comments.

But when it came to biz and extensions and timing, the club showed its hand or degree of faith (or lack of). From his point of view, as you say, there's more want, faith, need, contract, money coming from his home state, so why not.
It's disappointing but not the end of the world in context, it's footy, there'll be many more, we move on...

Not happy about this! Not after carrying him through all his injured seasons.
More the fool us for extending contracts for injured players. No such thing as club loyalty any more from players and clubs.

He can walk to the psd and get picked up by WC again if Carltons offer is Motlop

Anyone taking potshots at the club for this, pull your head in.

Other than drafting the bloke in the first place, clearly an error we can all finally acknowledge, the club has done the right thing by him through his entire time here.

2 Year year deal tabled for him finally putting a solid month of footy in after 4 years was very generous.

**** Chesser. I've got no issues with the club handling his contract the way they did. He didn't deserve anything sooner, or anything longer, it's a mercenary piss poor decision by Chesser and about on par with his usual level.

I reckon he'll be just as injury prone and shit at Carlton. My issue is him bailing on the club that has put so much into him, not that he's actually going.

Yeah this one definitely isn’t on the club. A lot is but not this.

Would’ve thought it is fairly sensible to say to him “You have a block of games now despite poor WAFL form to fight for your career. Perform and you get an extension”.

He performed so we offered him the extension. But then he got another offer and wants to bail instead. Fairly shitty by him imo but don’t think the club can be blamed for anything here.

Contract was offered at the right time for the right length.

Would rather get a player off them tbh.

Loading up on late picks, in particularly late future picks is just annoying and doesn't help our situation. Ideally we'd use Chesser to move one of our other picks up slightly.

If not, can't believe I'm actually saying this but...

  • Holland's the white powder fiend.
  • Floplop
  • Even a broken down Acres would be more valuable to our team right now.

All of them are better for our side than a late pick this year or future pick.

I'd do Hollands for Chesser tbh

Same age profile and I think both at their best - Hollands is the better player. Just have to take that off field risk but ultimately is it much of a risk if we are getting f all for Chesser anyway? It's not like we are paying a first rounder for him or anything and if Hollands can't get his act together he just gets binned and we move on. But if getting to a third AFL club on the other side of the country is enough to sort him out then it could be a win.

Must say, given the whispers pre draft around Hewetts ‘antics’, I’m thinking a Hollands type could well send him off the rails a bit. Just think he’s too big of a distraction for our young crew, but you take a Hollands over Chesser on ability every day of the week.

Hollands with a bunch of strict controls?

Pretty cooked idea tbh. The Blues knew his history, everyone did and still they tried and failed to keep him on the straight and narrow playing alongside his younger brother.

Doubt any big club has a chance with him. Needs to be a minnow club in the middle of nowhere like Fold Coast or GWS.

Giants have form with Jesse kick flipping his car and Stringer being a legitimate rock spider 🕸️ 🕷️
