America has a problem with gun violence, and if a classroom full of little kids being slaughtered (Sandy Hook) couldn't cause a wholesale change in attitudes and laws, then nothing could. FFS, you even had a prominent commentator being sued for propagating a conspiracy from the left about what should be a non-political issue like Sandy Hook - even worse, millions of voters (not an exaggeration) still believe him.

The US political discourse is f***ed, and I am glad Australia actively repudiates the politics of hate and intolerance.

Funny, I didnt see this level of outpouring for Melissa and Mark Hortman from the Red side of US politics.

I hate the precedent it says. I hate gun violence. I hate the eye for an eye logic, the martyrdom. All of it.

Global politics right now is cooked.

I wonder how different the world would be 5”today if Gore had won 2000. I think about it a lot. One of the largest sliding doors moments I can think of.

Old mate is tripping over himself for any opportunity to vilify those that don't want kids shot up in schools, or want affordable access to healthcare.

Charlie Kirk was a large proponent for creating the division that got him killed. Hard to feel sympathy for that.

Bit like when people that do free climbs of buildings end up dying.

I know I'm tempting fate with this, but I am glad political violence (and gun violence) is incredibly rare here to the point of it being virtually non-existent. And those peddling hate are a fringe view here. Just today, Senator Price was demoted from the Shadow Cabinet by her own leader for sticking by her hateful views. In the recent past, we've had MPs repudiated by their own parties for promoting intolerant views. We have independent courts and electoral bodies, compulsory voting and strong hate speech laws, all of which contribute to the safe political environment we have here.

I know we are not perfect in Australia - but we are a damned sight better than the cluster-f*** of the USA. Anyway, this is turning into an SRP post so I'll leave it at that. I do genuinely feel sorry for his wife and kids and his family and friends, and for Charlie Kirk himself as nobody deserves to be the victim of gun violence - but I don't feel sorry for the hateful ideology that Charlie Kirk represented and I hope never gets imported into Australia.

I think its less that theres a conspiracy here, and more the crossover between conspiracy nuts and Kirk fans. I'm sure our good friend could $explain$ more if you'd like.

That's not surprising. Hewett came out as a Trumper during the eagles podcast that Oscar Allen used to host last year (or was it 2023?). Even Oscar seemed a bit taken aback when he said it.

I didn't agree with a lot of what he said, but I didn't mind watching his debates/videos over the years.

Feel like consuming media from different perspectives is a healthy thing, but I understand why it would trigger some folks. Though if you're in that category, it isn't hard to avoid.

Pretty awful turn of events and I feel rotten for his family.

As an aside, my life has generally been better and happier since I've adopted a more apolitical approach to life.
