If he played forward so much then it wouldn't hurt to hit the scoreboard🙄

Bailey Williams had pretty much identical year despite being a leapfrog that can't kick straight.
CDT a better centre half forward option, Williams better deeper.

👍Would have gone in the mid-late 30's last year
Five shots at goal in his senior VFL debut.

If CDT is 30s then what does that make Sharp? Pick 45? Later than Clay Hall. If that’s the state of affairs then we should be taking absolute minimum picks in this draft.

If we got a Redden clone in the draft at any stage since 2019( 263 games and a lock 22 from year 1) he would be our best player picked barring maybe H Reid.

This draft is weak weak.
And yet people are dying on the hill that we must take the “elite talent” in this draft when there simply may not be any. Banging on about how we have to take the Rowell, Dunkley, Tom Green clone when we are more likely to get a Will Phillips. Delusional

I’d rather a player than pick for Ryan and Chesser. A Steele, Heath/Dodson, Barrat, Boxshall type with later picks involved if needed to balance it out. Our team is young enough as it is, especially with more draftees coming in, need some more mature bodies to help out the youth.
Agreed.

Need to turn Chesser and Ryan into a Sam Butler and Starcervich.

Many of us have even watched him play full games.

Were you impressed with his average 14 hitouts at the national champs against the best rucks in the upcoming draft?

Good effort, considering he's undersized against them all, I guess.

Didnt he play mainly forward in the champs?

Recall reading draft watchers were frustrated he didnt play first ruck more so we couod get a better gauge on CDT versus other #1 rucis.

Now I'm not necessarily advocating we take CDT with pick 1 or 2, but calling him Barnett 2.0 is an ignorant take.
I didn't call him Barnett 2.0.

The point made was we took the best available ruck who was considered that mobile possession type ruck with a decent jump at pick 20.

What have we learnt, and what has history told us about taking rucks early.?? Particularly if the can't seem to dominate there own peers in the ruck.

Secondly, people are overestimating the last possession affect on the ruck position. If anything, a very tall ruckman who is elite overhead will be required to ensure he can drop back into defence when the between the arcs kicks come in. It will extend gawns career. And with no sub, the clubs will opt to play 2 rucks, to cover the ground. This will favour freo next year immensely.

I genuinely cannot fathom his hype. He’s great at ground level, like a fourth midfielder even! You know what he isn’t though? A midfielder. He’s a ruck that can’t even beat his own age group in the contest. He has regularly been beaten throughout the year. We don’t need a Jackson, and by the same token admittedly all we do need is someone competitive, but if the rules are going to change to allow for less physically dominant rucks and more skillful rucks, I’d rather just get A Reid training there full time. If we were drafting CDT at the Hawks pick then f***ing sick that’s awesome get him in. But the talk is at 2. And at 1 and 2 we need players that fix our ball winning woes. First and foremost. You don’t need an elite ruck to win premierships, or even win games.
There is a difference between media hype and expert rankings. As much as I’m sure all the fans on here know boats, I tend to trust someone like Cal with actual inside knowledge and track record of accuracy more.

Jackson is a gun. Ridiculous to suggest he wouldn’t be great for us. As a full time ruck or whatever hybrid role, versatility is not a bad thing.

The proposed rule changes would suit CDT to a tee, and with the extra bench spot it sounds like most teams will play two rucks. No reason that A Reid can’t work on his ruck craft too and they could be a long term pairing.

It seems like people have a mental barrier around taking a ruck at the top end, which is weird given it normally works out well (Nic Nat, Jackson, Kruezer). We badly need ball winning mids, and in most years there is a plethora of options at the top end who had elite traits, but this draft is notoriously underwhelming and may just not have the future midfield stars.

So in other years CDT may have gone in the teens (around the Hawks pick as you suggest) but this year he is valued higher in comparison.

Whichever way it goes, I hope we can still land a young mid via trade who has shown a bit because I don’t see our midfield savior coming in this draft. But the options are already drying up with guys like Erasmus signing on.

The other option is trading picks into the future IF there’s better players that we have our eye on, which would hurt given we want to improve now but if we could land Bont next year or Will Phillips this year then we would all do it.

Im more than happy if we target mids with our first 2 picks or duursma who will probably end up in the midfield eventually. The next 2 drafts have high end rucks for us to grab if we haven't traded someone in
Whats peoples thoughts on dovaston? What's his ceiling?
Just reading the thread on mature aged draft hopefuls McCarthy's old running mate Harry Scott is a 190cm midfielder, big possession winner and tackler. Anyone seen much of him?

Flynn Riley won the coaches award in the Carlton reserves. He’s not on their list yet. Carltin fans are very keen for him to be drafted. I’d much rather see us pick this guy up then risk pick one or two on Duff-Tytler who hasn’t demonstrated great ruck craft or overhead marking.

Should we just trade our picks for future picks? 😭

As long as it isn't us, I'm fine. Seems like a terrifically shit teammate and bloke.
Shit way to handle the situation, but in his defence. He's played 250+ games and not sniffed winning a final, while Essendon have continually shit the bed with drafting. trading and managing the club.

He doesn't want to end up playing 350 games and never played in a winning final, which is where Essendon are heading right now. No way they win a final in the next 4 years.

Essendon only have themselves to blame.

I'd take a Jackson. Jackson could legit be a no. 1 ruck if requried. But given they have Darcy they can use him as the jack of all trades.

Having said that. CDT isn't Jackson. Keep tapping the sign. National Champs. Hitouts average. CDT 14, Jackson 37.

what ever it takes, I hird they had karma issues

With reference to the talk about CDT is still growing, I heard a rumour that the draft bolter Sullivan Robey was only 175cm last year while growing into the current height of 192cm. With this growth rate, he will be 209cm in 2026?
By the time we're challenging he will be well over 300cm.
Easy decision West Coast.

I see Sharp as becoming Dunkley-lite. Just an absolute facilitator that can rack it up himself but lifts the game of every other mid he plays with by relying on his contest skills and defensive pressure/tenacity
A Dunkley type is fine if it’s Dunkley. But spending pick 2 on Sam Berry or Redden won’t cut it.

Why not?

It's exactly the player we need. If Sharp turned out to be Redden then that is totally fine considering he's already paired up with Hewett, Harley, possibly Durrsma and eventually even Warner.

Anyone sleeping on a Jack Redden type, a 263 game extractor, with the state our list is in and the rate we win contested possessions is an idiot.

Would you mind sharing where you've got your stats from?
I struggle to find U18 numbers online.

Cheers :thumbsu:

Jack Redden really doesn't get the kudos he deserves. Bloke could football.
