List Mgmt. Welcome Campbell Chesser (Pick 14, 2021 National Draft)

Wow - so we didn't take many first round selections over the years we were playing finals and winning a flag. That's how the system is supposed to work.

How many did we take from 2022-2024? Four (and they're all still here).
Teams playing finals still have access to first round picks, they just come later in the chain. It's a case of retaining the pick (i.e. not trading) and nailing the picks you keep.

You'd hope first round picks from 2022 - 2024 were still on the list. The calamity we're in is because we're bereft of senior talent, which would be on the list had we not cocked up drafting in those previous years.

😔
Not a single one of West Coast’s top (30) draft picks from 2015 to 2021 will be at the club next season, and only three of any draftees taken between 2016 and 2020 will be there
2015: 28 Partington
2016: 13 Venables
2017: 13 Brander
2018: 28 O'Neill
2019: 49 Jamieson
2020: 52 Edwards
2021: 14 Chesser

Only 3 first round picks, 2 second round picks, 1 third round pick and 1 fourth round pick...
Unlucky with Venables, but probably fair to say with f**ked up in 2017 and 2021.
Brander could've been on our list longer except that he was tired of being stuck on the wing. Glad that he wasn't though. Should've been part of the TK trade.

Tigers from 2013 - 2023 (Excluding 2021) Tigers only have Balta (criminal), Thomson Dow (yuk), from the top 30.

It's almost like being good for those years means you don't take many top 30 picks.... In fact most years you'd take 1 at most, given your second rounder will be later than 30. Also if you trade your first rounder you take none.

Seems odd that the club hasn’t put out a statement about Chesser’s trade request. Does it mean anything or is it likely something simple like the communications people being on leave?

True, but we used them in pursuit of a flag, so I'm fine with that. 2015 we traded out to get Redden and Jetta (wouldn't have won a flag without them). Venables 2016 was bad luck. 2017 Brander was a bust, still got value out of Oscar and Ryan though (so I think it was an alright draft). 2019 and 2020 we traded out of for Kelly, won't go into it again, but I think all the R1 selections we traded are no longer playing AFL (except for Angwin at GWS who doesn't get many games).

I'd say we made a lot of correct calls and got a flag, made some bad calls and Kelly was a better outcome than what anyone else did with those selections. Us bottoming out is a feature, not a bug, of the AFL system. 2017/19/20 premiers Richmond are right there alongside us on the bottom.

The more important question is how do clubs like Cats and Pies avoid it for so long? Pies got lucky with F/S and have a genius coach, plus longevity of senior players due to lack of travel (imagine if JK, Shuey, Nic Nat were still on our list).

Cats even more benefit as they have a non-vic home ground advantage with Vic travel. Weirdly, look at their R1 drafting if you want to see poor selections and lack of picks. But their rookie list/late round is elite (I suspect they are very good at hiding players and spotting talent).

End of the day, it is what it is. Eagles have always gone straight to the bottom after a successful era. We take the guns (H.Reid, Ginbey, Shanahan etc), develop them and then we're back. The only reason this is longer than usual is that our senior players got absolutely annihilated with injury (partly from bad management and partly from bad luck). Yeo/Shep/Gov should still be on the list and Shuey and Nic Nat should have lasted a few more years. Darling also shouldn't have fallen off the cliff - J Cameron is only 1 year younger.

Perhaps they just don't think him leaving is as significant as Allen or Ryan.
Either that or they're too preoccupied with the AFLW season.

This is your time to shine bro get that ai image app working. Maybe Chess could be giving all the fans the double middle fingers?

"Thanks for the rehab!"

Not having Oscar on our list next year is going to net us Pick 2, which sure seems preferable even though he's been a good player (and good draft selection).

The stat about not having any remaining high draft picks from 15-22 is about as context-free as the stat about Freo having won the same number of finals as us since 2019.

It's not like we've been leaking good drafted players like Brissie did in the early 2010s. We still have a committed core group of young players who wanna bring us up the ladder.

It may be possible we were very confident he would take our offer, have been blindsided a little bit, and have asked if Chesser is willing for us to do some sums and have another dip to try to convince him to stay.

Not sure how likely that would be to succeed, even if it is the case.

Probably waiting for Tim Kelly to return from his holiday in Utah before lodging the paperwork.

I'd be disappointed to keep him rather than getting pick 34 or preferably 44 back.

We ****ed up our trade and drafting through that era more than any club in AFL history. Convince me otherwise.

I feel a bit icky thinking about McCrae as a genius.

This is the key point, plus getting into the ear of local players early. The list of draftees from the Geelong falcons who had a good career without playing for Geelong is pretty damn small.

Er.

Literally JUST From the "Notable Falcons Players" list on wikipedia:
Not included in that list (apparently not notable enough) are Travis Boak, Sean Darcy, Charlie Curnow...etc...so, ah, no?

None of the first bunch are recent, and you'd have plenty arguing that Schofield wasn't a good player.

Boak was pretty famously pitched to, there's constant rumours about Darcy to Geelong and Geelong is also supposedly one of the potential destinations for Curnow this year.

I'm really not sure that this is much of a counterpoint.

You don't think his plan to force Peter Daicos to have sex at a time that would then coincide with his future coaching tenure while ensuring 9 other teams remain in Vic to lessen his future travel arrangements....?

There's no pleasing some ppl

Still no announcement by the eagles on chess??? Ryan they put one out straight away. Eagles blindsided? More at play behind the scenes?

I thought they only did a statement if it was a long term player or recognisable player, half the supporter base probably don’t know who Campbell Chesser is.
