The worst year they could ever bring this in. Eagles just had our worst season ever and they want WA to play in state of origin.

Dumb ass AFL. Yey it's so fun watching all the players not playing for the Eagles.

At least we won’t have to worry about any of our players getting injured.

I’d heard a few years back that budgies and fish and all this were included in the tigers membership total. A big club 🤭
Had a Vic (WC) family membership once. 2 adults and 2 kids. One kid was a dog, and got selected to run out with the team - had to say he was sick and send his brother. :)

Can I just say that I've getting great schadenfreude out of watching Essendon implode.

My favourite stat now is that all other 17 clubs have won a final more recently than Essendon.

They deserved it after the drugs saga.

Yet, they’ll get 50k to the game and sell it to the vast eastern states audience that by then will be keen for a bit of footy. Probably gets in 3m viewers nationally.

It’s win/win as far as they will be concerned. We will put on a good show as always.

Don’t get me wrong though, this isn’t about a love of the game or state of origin. It’s about selling a marquee game to the broadcasters who started to show a bit of discontent with some of the scheduling decisions made towards the back end of the year.

Spot on, viewing is in decline.

....Because none of those 4 teams played in those games....
I read the tweet as saying the last 24 GFs featured at least one of those teams. I think your take is correct for whoever wrote the list but the person who wrote the tweet got it confused.

Really shows that the top clubs still dominate at the expense of the others. Add us, Sydney and Richmond and that covers at least one of the 7 clubs being in all GFs since 2002.

That's for explaining it. I couldn't work out what the hell the tweet was trying to imply

Now looking at it that way, Brissy are just bookending the timeframe. They were pretty dog shit for most of those years inbetween the 3peat and now.

Hawks similar to Brissy with two very distinct phases of success, were irrelevant until '07. Dominated for a decade, bottomed out from '17-'23. How long will this run of success last?

Collingwood are the ones with the biggest fluctuations. They have success, fall away quickly but also build back up just as fast.

Cats are the one however. They were similar to the Hawks, irrelevant until '07, but haven't missed a beat since. Only dropping out of the 8 twice since '07

So...I was bored again. This time this tweet inspired me. So I've done some finals appearances calculations.

Like the tweet I went back from this year, but went back 25 years instead of 24, which gives a nice round number of 50 GF "slots" and 100 PF "slots" (i.e. from 2001 -> 2025 50 teams will have played off in the GF, and 100 teams in the PFs) and also includes Brisbane's flag from '01.

When it comes to Grand Final appearances, it's really lopsided...as we already knew. Just 5 teams have played in 30 of the 48 (so far) grand final places up for grabs, and all of the remaining teams this year are in that group, so this year it will take that to 32 of the last 50 GF slots taken by just 5 teams. Add us and Richmond, and you get all the way to 39 of 50 between just 7 teams. That's really bad in an 18 team comp that 11 teams have shared just 11 slots over 25 years (albeit two of them have only existed for a bit over half that time)

For Prelims however, things even out quite a bit. All teams except Gold Coast have made at least one prelim in this time, and 11 teams have made at least 5 (an average of one every 4 years, which is not too bad). Other than the Gold Cuns, only two teams only have 1 PF and as those are Essendon and Carlton, then I'm inclined to think things are working well here 🤪

Finally, conversion rates are interesting. Richmond were the kings of converting Granny's to Flags - 3 flags from their only three appearances in the big dance. Hawthorn (the bastards) are next best, netting 4 flags from 5 appearances. Down the other end the Swans really are the ugly ducklings - just 2 flags to show from their whopping 7 grand finals. Collingwood are true to their age-won nickname though and not far behind getting just 2 flags for their 6 twirls 'round the big dance.

For prelims, things are, again, more interesting. Firstly, to bignote ourselves, of the teams with at least 5 prelims in the last 25 years, the Eagles have the best Prelim -> Grand Final conversion rate, turning our 5 prelims into 4 granny's. Interestingly Sydney are next, as despite being trash at winning GFs, they have made their 7 from 10 prelims. Worth noting here that while perennially talked up around these parts as "making up the numbers" Geelong, while not good at making grand finals (40% hit rate), they're nowhere near the worst, with Adelaide making just one grand final from 5 prelims and Port just 2 from 8.

Finally, Prelim -> Flag conversions are, I think, the most interesting. Richmond the clear leaders here, turning 5 prelims into 3 flags (60%). Those dicks at Hawthorn are next best going 4 from 8 (50%). While we can certainly laugh at Geelong (4 flags from 15 prelims, yes...15...in just 25 years!) and even more at Collingwood with 2 flags from 12 prelims...it's the Saints and Adelaide who have truly failed to convert opportunity to success with a combined 10 prelims for exactly 0 flags. That's a bit :poo:

Here's the overall table for anyone still actually reading...

Nice one!

Another thing to add....since 2006 at least 1 of these 4 teams has been in PF week.

It’s obviously just showing the GFs with these four sides in them for emphasis

Pretty telling tbh
The 4 eliminated finalists so far have 2 flags between them, both Adelaide and 25+ years ago.

In contrast the 4 remaining finalists have collectively won 14 flags this century.

So many potentially great storylines missed instead of the VFL wankfest we're left with.

...except 2021.
Take out WCE and add in the Bulldogs. That covers everything since 2000. Yes I know adding Bulldogs sort of distorts the narrative about powerful clubs but the Lions haven't been a powerhouse all century really...

Lions, Cats, Hawks, Pies, Sydney, Bulldogs, Richmond

However that is nearing half the league, so I reckon the original focus on 4 clubs is actually more interesting. The fact is that those 4 clubs will have made 26 grand final appearances in 25 years between them (after this season)
