It'd be somewhat ironic if Oscar ended up having the cleanest exit.

The players have been beaten down with 1000000 losses in 4 years I think they've had so much life sucked out of them that they don't even care. At least the Essendon players seem somewhat offended that their captain wants to take off. Our players couldn't have a shit, which speaks to the heart of the problem of everything down there right now.

Would we take a throw at the stumps here?
Rather Simpkin over Flanders, at least he will get his hands dirty in the contest, Flanders is a cherry on top player.
Senior players, particularly captains who are leaving their basketcase clubs like North or the Bombers who haven't had any success aren't going to move across the country to come to another basket case. He will want to go to a team he thinks will play finals next year.

Simpkin wouldn’t be the worst senior midfield option if he can come via a cheap trade/salary dump. Although a bit rough around the edges, he’s the type of player happy to get his hands dirty and find the pill. Will be a good enough foil to help Harley to develop.

Can’t see him agreeing to come to Perth though but at the same time can’t see any other club going for him and definitely can’t see him getting midfield time at the Roos.

Besides Steele, I’m struggling to see any other “realistic” quality older options. Hopefully more present as we head into trade period.

This is a bombshell of a trade period.

We need to sit back and eat popcorn, waiting for the inevitable phone call that a team needs us to get involved for own of pick 1 and 2. Extract maximum value out of other teams desperation. And don't include Hawks in any of it.
Oh I’d include the Hawks but it would need to be big time in our favour. You don’t get even if you don’t play the game

I doubt any of those teams are happy to play him the $1m a year he is on, so unless he takes a pay cut I can’t see those sides being interested.

Split 1 with Essendon for 5 & 6. If Merrett left I can see them offering overs as they need something to give the fans hope

6 for Flanders then package up picks for suns pick 8. I would say package up picks for pick 6 but not sure you can trade the same pick back?

End up with Flanders, 2, 5, 8

Suns get the points to match all there academy players this year & still have Pick 6 to move into next year.
Flanders isn’t worth pick 6
Somewhere approaching pick 15 I reckon
Edit: pick 10-15

NEALE GOING NOWHERE

Brisbane star Lachie Neale will not be making a return to Perth as his manager squashed talk he was in the sights of West Coast.

The dual Brownlow medallist has been the subject of speculation that he was keen to return to West Australia, where he played 135 games for Fremantle from 2012-18.

But no discussions have been held with the Eagles, or Dockers, and Neale has no interest in the move.

The talk reached the Brisbane midfielder, who was miffed about it.

His manager, Tim Lawrence of TGI Sport, told this masthead there was “absolutely nothing to it”.

Neale is out of contract at the end of next season and in the past has gone early on extensions but is hoping to piece together a strong pre-season before getting into talks on a new deal at the Lions.

The 32-year-old has had plenty of time to think in the past week as he works through a determined effort to return from a calf injury for the grand final, should the Lions make it.

Think a large portion of this fan base thinks contested mids are as important as they once were years ago, the game has shifted, transition midfielders who accumulate on the inside and outside and that overlap constantly are the real prizes nowadays.

You still want them to have some contested ability of course, but the game is shifting away from pure bulls being superstars, Rowell and Dunkley are really the two key exceptions.

Most teams are filling that role with role players now / will be in the future.

As for Jy Simpkin, we should steer clear, another absolute hack with ball in hand and is slow.

With the way contracted players are simply stating their intentions and leaving, surely, we are going to a full free agency model in the next few years.

The PFA will push for it.

Is it possible to bring a restraint of trade case (as happened in European soccer) and the whole thing unravel?

That's what makes Duursma a must get at the top of the draft. Great runner/athlete and will rack up the metres gained for us.

Contested mids are important but should be easy to find so why they ain’t a priority for list managers. Agreed running transition mids are the ones that are harder to find but very important in the modern game.

Issue is we don’t even have the contested role playing mid which should be easy to get. Graham maybe could be the man but lacks a bit of X factor like a Newcombe to go with the contested game. Sharp might be that man as he had good hands and hits the score board

Newcombe finals series have been very important as a contested mid.

NBA style? Free agent after like 4 years if OOC but clubs can also trade any player to the club they wish?

This is what I have doubts about.

Already Ryan Daniels has mentioned pick 19 ffs. That's absurd.

If Lions have a 4 year deal on the table for him there's zero chance they let him walk cheaply. If we pay out the ass for a solid/limited albeit experienced player, that's going around in circles IMO.

Just did that with Baker, Graham and Owies.
Lions get Oscar and draiper free of draft captial and are going to play hard ball on starcivich?

If we pay more than **** all for him then we haven't learned a bloody thing since last years disaster trade period

Yeah I was thinking that. Its hard at the moment with pick swaps because the ladder isn't fully set & FA Compo isn't included yet but maybe something like this with a Juggle of picks

6 + 19 to Suns

Flanders + 17 + 32 to WCE

Going on the draft pick calculator that values Flanders at around pick 12.

If the suns need more points that pick 19 will most likely get them that as it's the first pick of Round 2.

Oh I’d include the Hawks but it would need to be big time in our favour. You don’t get even if you don’t play the game
Merrett to Hawks
Pick one and Hawks blues 1st pick to dons
Cam McKenzie Hawks F2 and pick 5 to Eagles.

Dons out Merrett pick 5
Hawks out McKenzie blues 1st F2
Eagles out pick 1

If they play hardball on starc we bid on Annabel at pick one. Or they play nice and we let the bid slide past pick 1 and 2 saving them 700+ points or the equivalent of pick 21.

Now, if Neale is part of the deal im happy to give up the end of first assistance pick (if we get it) for both starc and Neale.

Yuk.

Slide from 1-5 in a draft that has maybe 5-6 players near the top bracket (so we get the dregs, rather than first choice)

For a fringe (albeit young) mid and a F2 likely mid 30’s…

You mean ruined by taking the current club champion we brought to the club and the best WA kid that had his season ruined with injury and illness?

He's not going to say anything while Brisbane are still in the premiership hunt, right?
