I totally agree, and I don't believe we will split as the chance of getting en elite player does diminish every selection you drop back. That's not in question. But the narrative some seem to have whereby there's an expectation a top-5 pick delivers an elite player is just not close to the reality.

So if the club thinks picks 4-8 are pretty even, and we are a good chance to get our preferred option at #8 anyway, it's a no-brainer to split if another club thinks #4 will get them a much better player than #8 and will pay 'overs' for that opportunity.

ATEOTD, if we have 4-5 x players we rate as clearly superior to 6+, we won't split. If we rate only 3 x players as clearly superior and have a 'blanket' over the next group, we'd listen to offers.
there is more to this.

draft now and get others later.

if we stuff up the draft going back harder to get good recruitments in later years like in 2-3 years because better payers want to play with better players and increase their chances to win

the fact we have a chance to pick up two guns in this draft plus what we got last year is a great opportunity where if we get it right our possibilities increase significantly down the track

Not sure anyone is suggesting trading #4 for 2 x rubbish picks. It's for a couple of top-12 picks.

% chance of getting a 200-gamer:
pick 3 to 5 = 36%
pick 6 to 12 = 31%

% chance of getting an AA selection:
pick 3 to 5 = 29%
pick 6 to 12 = 19%

So it's not a clear cut decision based purely on stats and averages. It really depends on how we rate the draft. And when looking at some of the names taken at #4 : Tim Walsh, McAlister, J Pickett, Fitzy, Morabito, Toumpas, Livingston, C Morton, Polak, M Bolton, Tambling.......

Let's not pretend whomever we pick at #4 is any sort of lock to be superior to both players we pick from 6 to 12. History tells us #4 is a pretty good chance of not being an elite player. I accept #4 is more chance of being elite than #7 who is more chance than #10 and so on.....but that's why we get 2 x picks versus 1.

Right now, hand on heart, I'd rather have Robey, X Taylor AND Grjl over just Robey and Sharp.
Yes I’d rather the 3 players also but no club is giving us 2 two top 15 picks for our pick 4.

Grockadoc do you have any info who we might be looking at? Your intel on Faull last year was spot on

As I mentioned a few weeks ago, we have been linked to players like Lindsay, Sharp, Cumming, Robey, Marsh and Grlj. Nothing definitive this year as the club are playing this close to their chest, and outside of a ruckman and some outside run, there really isn't a glaring list deficiency.

True, but I wouldn't be using top picks on one when we still need young gun mids.
I wouldn't use top 4 on a outside half back but if we split I think that's an option.

Smillie, Lalor, Hotton, McAuliffe & pick 3 plus Armstrong next year

Pathetic beggars junkie craving handouts from daddy. Gone too long since the AFL kissed them on the dick they’re starting to display withdrawal symptoms.

Don’t worry, beggar. Rort compo for that spud Oscar Allen is coming.

Clearly our midfield is a deficiency. North absolutely flogged us in the midfield at the end of the year and we had zero AFL listed mids in the VFL at the end of the year. Must be a priority.
