More likely he ran out of steam. Probably still the same thing, fatigue impacts form, but I’d argue it was beyond his control.
Some strategic rests for a 2nd year player might have been wise but we tend not to mess with the 22 if it can be avoided

You dont think one of our 3 best players being suspended for the finals in a highly publicised event - was a distraction and issue for the playing group and team?

Sure - He could be Ken or Craig or Buckley. Or he could be Woosha, Goodwin or Fagan. The fact is after 2025 he has earned the chance to give it a go again in 2025 and possibly 2026.

The players clearly believe in him. The fact that so many have signed long term extensions (Sog, Rachele, Woz) and he has attracted so many players (Dawson, Rankine, ANB, Peatling, Cumming, Ah Chee and possibly Trac) shows that we are on the right track.

I don’t really care that players believe in him, they’re not the judges that matter, winning finals is. For the record, Brendan Bolton was adored by the Carlton list.

With respect to Rankine, I largely agree. Firstly the player, losing a top 3 guy and replacing them with 24th is always a massive loss. Despite what many (not necessarily you) believed following his suspension. In terms of the ‘effect’ on the playing list, sure, maybe for a bit. But after a Roos game, week off and Pies loss, if the group can’t snap out of it and concentrate on the game at hand, then your awesome list is actually crud. And then we’re left just with the loss of the player, with Hawks missing a top 3 player too.

Now, this is important, we had a group pick themselves up off the canvas after their coach was murdered. And our group can’t do similar a month after a player is suspended?

It’s either a coaching issue or not such an “awesome list”. You choose.

From the Sunday Mail 5th October. [PLAYERCARD]Matthew Nicks[/PLAYERCARD]' speech at the Club Awards Night. Wow, do these people live in bubbles? He only now realises how fans feel and react? What an earth shattering moment for him. From now on, I'm sure he'll coach much better, and even win a final or two!

Quote: 'NICKS’ MOTHERLY ADVICE
The Crows senior coach also kept it in the family during his speech.

And based on it, watching a Crows game with his mum Bev would be an experience.

As part of talking about the passion of sport, and just how much the way the Crows season ended hurt Nicks told a story of watching one of Adelaide’s SANFL team’s finals with his mum – the first time they had done it together in around 30 years.

“I was struck with how emotionally invested she was, at one point I actually had to ask her to stop,” he said.

“Mum was shouting out and visibly angry, “that’s it, put your f***ing head over the ball”, “bloody umpires, that’s pathetic”.

It was in that moment that I actually saw from a supporters point of view, what being truly invested looks like.'

By the way, I'm the same when I watch the footy as Nicks' Mum. Not good for my blood pressure, so I tend not to watch many games now.

Well there is Nicks

Hasn’t he also said in the past he isn’t on social media (well he is on Instagram but has a whole total of 7 posts - last one nearly two years ago).

His awareness levels are truly astonishing bad.

To be fair if I was running a club the 1st thing I would tell everyone on the football side of things is to get off SM

We are terrible to our heroes and even worse to also rans

But there should be people monitoring the noise - there has to be actually when you hear the commentary around noise

Not everyone is a psychopath tho.

He's a straight up moron. If he cracked 100 on an IQ test I'd be extremely surprised.

Absolutely. My favourite is when star players get careers ruined by injuries and then they play a few bad games at the back end of the career, then all off a sudden they are the worst player in the world and their career was over rated and there stats were padded.

So Petracca chose Hardwick over Nicks……was it the hair?
Yep...
But seriously, it was reported he liked hardwick and the vision he had for the club. So he chose hardwick over the nicks vision.

We all know that nicks lacks personality but it seems Petracca saw through the corporate speak of our drone coach.

Another piece of evidence to sack him.

2 x premiership player, 3 time premiership coach with an up and coming list , actively backed by the AFL or a bloke who has literally avoided success his whole life, at the club that has achieved virtually nothing for 28 years.

Not a hard choice for a bloke chasing short term success, with or without the extra year and $.
