If I'm building an AFL pressure forward I'm starting with a VFL/WAFL/SANFL midfielder who is a bit short but has tried to make up for it with a lot of body building - perhaps sprinkling in some elite work rate to make up for not being particularly quick, a disciplined mind to stay on task but the task is ultimately fairly simple.

There's a lot of players like that. I'd argue we could rotate one of our midfielders with far more potential into the role if we wanted, all they really need is to stay focused. Don't need any particular elite skills except work rate and the body of someone who has applied that work rate for maybe three to four years.

Brandon Walker fits that perfectly, except he also has elite speed.

I wouldn’t mind some of the delisted AFL small fwds to be given a train on shot for a spot on the list. Lachlan Murphy, Jed McEntee, Lloyd Johnston, Darcy Craven etc. their fitness base should be there and should be able to play a pressure fwd role.

Also think our mids need to rotate fwd more.

I think there was a rumour that Freo were looking at Oskar Smartt, who Essendon picked up in the MSD last year and have since delisted. Looks like a Schultz type of player.

It's so funny to me how all year, we were absolutely belted by the media over so many things that were just plain wrong

• Opting for two rucks against GC in horrible conditions (worked magnificently)
• the way we used rotations vs Adelaide to combat fatigue due to a short break + playing in hot conditions for 3 or 4 rounds in a row
• bringing back Darcy and managing his minutes & two rucks debate in general
• ball movement (we were one of the most DIRECT teams all year, we might take a long time to START the movement of the ball but when we do move it is efficient and quick)
• JLO not being an arseh*le makes him a poor coach (wrong + wrong)
• Guts up anyone?
• Analysis on age profiles but never acknowledge how young Freo actually are (one example was when we played a shit club like eagles or north and they kept going on and on about how young their list profile was and it turned out on game day our team was on avg younger and also less experienced and also had less veterans out there)
• People daring to say we still play rossball....C'mon
• Hell even Murphy Reid barely got any credit or mention until the last 4 weeks of the season when it was obvious he was going to win the rising star so they had to warm up the general AFL public to his brilliance

And NOW we throw at least 1 pick away to help out other clubs (regardless of whether people think it's valuable or not), when we don't have a heap of resources, and we are suddenly a GENIUS club. With no further analysis or questions or explanations for why we did it this way.

I'm still very happy we have landed McVee and I am very optimistic about our list but f*ckkk me it would be nice to have some genuine Freo focussed analysis.

Last year 71 players were selected in the national draft
The years before was 64, and 59.
You would have to assume this year being a weak draft after a strong draft that it will be mid 50's.

I think we can go one less player on the rookie list if we had to, so we could still get Whan if he went after our 2nd pick plus I don't think clubs force other clubs to match a very late for a NGA.

From memory Walker going as late as he did was a shock. It was Western that was borderline.

Would need to be a 3 team trade where our first is used and in someway gets Cats Curnow or Marshall, although they could possibly get Marshall with what they have.

I’d pay 20 for Humphries, don’t think Cats would really consider it, unless literally worked into Curnow deal.

I don't profess to know the overall relative strength of this draft compared to others.
What I do know is every single draft I have ever seen, regardless of whether it was ex-ante labelled a super draft or a crap draft, has had players picked at 50+ or as rookies that turned out to be very good AFL players, and players taken in the first round that turned out to be duds.
This pervasive idea that this draft is terrible seems to be disproportionate, unless it is different from every draft ever I expect in a few years it will be seen the same, with some failures taken early and some diamonds taken late or as rookies

We are all talking about Toby Rhan but can we give Ryda Luke a mention so he doesn't feel left out?

Don't think Luke is in the best 45 or so 18 year olds in the country tbh but is talented enough to get selected as a Category B rookie.

I say 45 18 year olds as I think they'll be around 50-55 picks used and they'll be at least 5-10 players 19 or older selected.

Whan might not be either but he'd be top 60-odd so that's probably close enough that the club takes the chance if we use a third selection.

I think most will agree that whoever we pick up is unlikely to slot into the 23. If they do? Well that would be a bargain pick up.

That would include if we use pick 20.

Yeah bizzare really.. of all the things to give credit to Freo this isn't it. We traded away our first round pick to help our cross town rivals and to secure a bottom 6 of our best 22 player. I think McVee will be decent, but this isn't exactly a groundbreaking trade.

We could've got him without that trade yesterday and I stand by that.
