Recommitted Zach Merrett [UFA 2027] - Wanted a trade to Hawthorn, but it didn't get done

that is a very fair offer, IMO.
it is overs for a 30yo, but he is contracted, so that is fair enough.
I will only guarantee you one thing, if that offer is not accepted, which is fine, Sam Mitchell will not re-negotiate and will change tack for another player.

Yep, trade week winners now for a long, long time.

Deals always look great, until they actually have to play a game together that is.

meh gotta take a win when you can.

A great effort, don't get me wrong. Just don't see a midfield of Newcombe, a possibly fit Day, Nash, McKenzie and Ward being able to knock off these sort of groups in a Prelim/Grand Final, where midfield dominance is vital:

Brisbane: McCluggage, Neale, Dunkley, Ashcroft x2
Gold Coast: Rowell, Anderson, Miller, Petracca, Humphrey

All of what you say might be true. But equally, it doesn’t mean you pay any price for Merrett. At the current point it’s already silly.

Do we? We just made a prelim without him.

Bombers need to inject talent in ASAP before Tassie comes around the corner.

He'd be nice to have and the cherry on top but I don't think we're giving up anything more than this. We rarely let our offers be made public so the fact that we have seems like it's our final offer to show the public we are trying to negotiate a deal and the only stumbling block is Essendon.

well after the cut and thrust of the past couple of weeks it is nice of your club to finally show the public they are trying to do something

Sold.

Since the Hawks have no such player on their list I am happy for them to accommodate your wish 👍
Remember the time you spelt Tsatas name wrong and then edited the post to pretend you didnt know his name?

That was pretty amusing yeah?

Hence why I said mediate.
The only thing the AFL mediate is that the trades are all above board and everything is agreed and at face value to the parties. They then tick off on them so they go through.

They don't get involved because one club thinks their offer is a great one and the other club is being mean holding their player to contract.

So things are playing out well for the trade deadline.

Essendon make a statement tonight “as we said, he won’t be traded under any circumstances”.

Hawks make another offer tomorrow.

Essendon accepts at 7:20pm.
Essendon will reject

Hawks change Hustwaite to Cam Mckinzie and the deal goes through at 7:25pm

No doubt, that even with Merrett we are still behind those two. On the other hand we do have a better back 6 than those two teams, and a reasonably well balanced forward line if Lewis stays fit. We got close to Lions in Brisbane in the final H&A round, although you could argue we were lucky with their inaccuracy. If do not reach agreement on Merrett, we'll also be putting the material from that offer into making a play for the last player on that GC mids list. I'd prefer Merrett for the 'right now', but that offer makes more sense for a young talented player than a 30 year old.

They definitely offer mediation, it's happened before.
They obviously have zero actual power in the discussions though, so I don't think it offers a whole lot.

It’s almost like it’s scripted.
