2025 List Management Discussion - Part 5

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th

I personally thought that high half forward role where he just ran his opponent from one end of the field to the other on repear in his debut season was his best spot.

Maybe the inside mid thing was to teach him how to get the footy with his head over the ball, or it was to do with his sometimes erratic kicking.

I hope we get the best out of him wherever he ends up.
I agree re high half forward. Just run oppo into the dirt. He’s so clever forward. He definitely plays like a wingman- whatever you name it, you’d want him being (running) more forward of centre than not.

Either we get a draft pick we can use or pay a small portion of his salary.

Yeh.

That’s my whole point. We did neither.

It’s ruthless AND its compassionate… right.

Yeh incredibly respectful to tell a former captain to **** off then pay another club to flip a shit pick so he can be a 30 year old in a rebuilding team.

For the record, I’ve said I had no issue with trading him again and again.

I don’t even care that we traded him for a future third

But trading him for a future third and copping even one dollar on his salary makes absolutely no sense. We’re ruthless and we’re not here to make friends, except maybe Melbourne and maybe Jack, after we’ve ****ed him over.

You on the sauce? 😂 You're being difficult.

Yes there was ruthlessness in the decision that he's no longer best 22.

There was respect and compassion with what transpired from then on.

They’re juxtaposed ideas so I’d say you’re on the sauce or we can just agree to disagree without being dicks.

Nor sure what it's like now but from the mid 90's Jack was the name of every 3rd boy because the parents saw John as being old fashioned and Jack was seen as the cool throwback to the turn of 20th century Australia. Gallipoli, Man from Snowy River and all that. Couldn't move in a class room without having to chuckle the first initial on the end of the little buggers to differentiate them.

Not surprised with the fall off finally. Now we'll get into the era of the common name with a letter chucked in somewhere for the effect of making the kid stand out. We all know it's coming. I look forward to the random vowel or Y in a name graph in 10 years.

Demography name lesson over. you can spare your thanks. 😁
Funny you say that. My son’s under 12 footy team has 5 Jack’s. Only their parents call them Jack, everyone else including all other parents call them by the differentiating nicknames. So, if it has fallen away, it will be sweeping back again into future drafts at some point.

God, some journo’s are an excruciating read. Needs some Jahari’s window. Bias is next level
I think with all journos and pundits it would be better if they actually declared their biases like ex-players do, they can get it out there instead of this pretence of impartiality. Then they can lean into it like the players do and we can just ignore their opinions or not as we choose.

North Melbourne is now irrelevant. Never seen or heard.

They are not doing anything to lift themselves out of the mire. Conservatively drafting mids, never trading, never making a splash.

It’s sad. In fact, it’s rather pathetic.

At least have a go. Make an effort.
They did make a splash in 2024.

Daniel and Parker. Whooosh!

And it allowed them to have no picks for a tall, so they traded their F1 to get back in.

You really can't get your head around what I'm saying? Honestly?
I understand what you’re saying I disagree that that’s what we did or how it comes across.

It’s not ruthless if we did it to be respectful of Jack (and it’s not ruthless to give Melbourne a freebie that we pay for) and it’s not respectful of him to boot him.

I understand the sentiment of your position I just think it’s naive and wrong.

Yeh, then keep him.

Honestly the way this forum flips and flops to slow stroke the admin.

In the build up it was all “Jack and Rowan were front loaded we don’t need the money off the books” but now all of a sudden it’s “oh it’s great to get even half his money off the books”.

To be clear every move we made on trade week was a winner, this one just missed. I’d rather have taken a fourth or fifth rounder or ****ing swap a late pick and dump his whole salary rather than what we did.
Plenty of posters on here would be eating humble pie if they read some of their early posts on the potential of trading Steele. I'm pretty sure even I was convinced at one stage that he'd net a first, but I didn't ridicule anyone thinking otherwise.

But yes, we have some professional flip floppers on here.

Anyway, I think it wasn't a huge miss, I just wish the club could be a bit more transparent. We only just found out that we were still paying a decent sum for Billings and he didn't exactly net us a decent return in a trade. There's reasons for the trade, it all makes sense, just put it out there - brutal as it is at least we won't hear 3 differing accounts from 3 different journos.

got to 62 pages behind, back to 42 in about 15 minutes, with trade period over im just going to scroll through now and look for quoted media headlines

happy with trade period
1.pies got older not better with no high picks
2.cats barely got better with just worpel & will go into 2026 with stanley
3.hawks got worse
4.bombers and merrett stuck with each other & they knocked back a pretty good deal
5.kept our f1 and weve got better
6.dogs added nothing, libba closer to the end, bont closer to dropping a level, sanders closer to tassie
7.there is a world where 6 interstate teams play finals & no vic teams have a chance,if we make the 8 im happy,if we dont im happy with that scenario

so only question is why the 2027 picks in?no reason or a reason?tassie have to draft near a whole list, would our 3 future 3rds and 2 future 4ths be handier to them than say their pick 20 or pick 39?giving us a decent pick for picks we likely dont even use?or something else?

on another note i mentioned David(the shark)Norman in a recent post, eerily he passed away within a day or 2 of that post, maybe same day,RIP

edit-it was the same day,october 15-https://www.richmondfc.com.au/news/1916657/vale-david-norman

Steele is gone now and we won't get him back, unless you think this current list management team should be changed because of their actions this trade window, then I dont see any point in going over it when we have much more interesting things to discuss.

I get the grief, though. He was a huge, huge part of our club for nearly a decade. It could have finished better, but it often doesn’t and when so, isnt a poor reflection on the relationship between player and club.

Nicky Winmar finished his career as a Bulldog and [PLAYERCARD]Jack Steven[/PLAYERCARD]'s last "Homecoming" year in the AFL has been gratefully wiped from the memories of all footy fans. Just saying.

I would’ve been okay to see Steele stay and play a half forward sort of role.

That said, the reality is the game’s passed him by which is now transition based and you can’t be having your highest paid mid behind Nas racking up less metres gained than Darcy who was in and out of the side large parts during the year.

Gone are the days where you can solely rely on being a contest based inside mid that can’t cover ground.

Im excited and wrapt with our new players we're bringing in, but cant understand why or how we'd let our captain go for a 3rd rd pick. We pushed him out and its pretty shameful to do that to a great club man. We got him to lose weight, which didn't suit his game and then let him play carrying injuries and moan that he has lost a step. Im sure and hope for him he is back to his best next season except against the Saints.

I think Flanders is expected to have considerable ball up attendance especially Centre ball ups

Yep for sure - I imagine he'll split time between midfield and half back along with Nas. From the side I named, onball rotations would be

Nas
Pou
Macrae
Flanders
Garcia
Boxshall
Windhager
Hall

You know what's funny with Darcy?.... I've been at games and watched him warm up and his kicking has been excellent. I think as confidence, game sense, decision making etc become more natural his kicking will improve.
Wilson is indecisive on a wing, can't work out what he wants to do.
Put the sticks in his view & he's a natural.
H.F.
Hall into the midfield.
