It's been interesting listening to Yze, Hartley and Gieschen regarding the aims for this draft, from Yze saying that we addressed a lot of areas of need in the last draft, Ry mentioning pace and Hartley saying that we'll go for BPA with our top picks.
Blair has also repeated many times that he's building a list of premiership players, so character and competitiveness would rate highly in his profiling of draftees along with talent of course. It's obvious that he has a blueprint of the type of players needed and the positions that need to be filled and as stated, a lot of those needs have been met. He's continued down that path already this year by targeting Rosas who would have provided a bit more zip around stoppages and have an impact forward, so it wouldn't surprise me of pick 34 (after bids) was used on that type. I'm not sure who has that skillset that might be available around that pick but it will be an area that's looked at I'm sure.
Two integral parts of the jigsaw of players that made up part of the dynasty picture were the wingers, KMac and Brandon Ellis, both had flaws but there's no denying that they were an important part of the structure. The Retschko trade is a clear sign that we're wanting to fill those wing spots and again, I'm sure that we'll be looking to address that need with the best player available at pick 34, to me that would be Matt Leray (if he lasts that long) he's only had 1 preseason in a football environment after captaining the SA U19 cricket side but choosing football instead, sound familiar?

Koby Coulson not sure GC will be able to land all their academy kids after we bid on their others using all their remaining picks after getting brand Fattraca he might slip through, Jack Dalton as we need speed and running ability and winning a BnF in 1/2 a season is huge, he's had a bad run with injuries but an amazingly consistent last few seasons certain to be a 200 game player, Fred Rodriguez has slipped for various reasons but its undeniable his skillset is exactly what we're lacking, Matt Leray AA winger can play inside too good both sides of body and clean hands, Latrelle Sumner-Pickett will most likely go too early but would pounce if still available, Harley Barker we can afford to wait for him to recover from his ACL just like with Hotton most other clubs in that pick <38 range only have one pick that early or need ready made players for their coaches future, we could get a bargain that fills a position we're desperate to fill. Even Louid Emmett if Cooper Duffman is gone.
Or like Mcauliffes/ Fawcetts year we might be able to keep trading back if who we want is gone and end up with bonus 2026 picks for Daffy, Leys and NGA kid.

Not worth trading back, because we accumulated Picks to trade with in the following year. But now clubs won’t want them as you can’t use junk picks to trade up.

We currently have 34 players listed for 2026 which includes Retschko and the uncontracted Dow & Sonsie, but doesn't include the upgrade for Seth Campbell, so if we re-sign the 2 of them and upgrade Seth that will leave us with a maximum of 3 spots for the national draft.
We will know by October 31st what the plan is for the draft as we will need to either sign or delist/rookie Dow & Sonsie by then.
With currently 4 live picks in the ND. 3, 4, 38 and a late 81 for Kellaway, it seems obvious that in order to keep out options open that both Dow and Sonsie will be delisted, but with the statement we'll consider re-rookieing them or taking them back for pre-season training in the SSP.
G’day guys, I’m not sure what’s being discussed here, but just a couple notes.
There are rules about the trading of future picks if a team already has a deficit.
A team can not live trade a future pick in to the current draft, if it leaves them short of matching a deficit, if they already have a deficit that requires all their future picks.
A club could of course trade a future, future pick (i.e. a 2027 pick). However GC can not trade any more of their 2027 picks this year as they have already traded their 2027 1st.
Something else to remember is that the draft order is “live” and DVI is "fluid".
If a team uses 3 picks to match a bid, all picks behind those 3 picks actually move up the draft order 2 spots, and increase in points value. So Gold Coasts remaining points will actually increase.
So for a rough example, Say GC take their current best 6 picks to the draft, 15, 18, 24, 28, 29 & 36. If Gold Coast are required to use their first 3 picks to match the Uwland bid at pick 2, they would have 197 points left over, and that pick would slot in at about pick 43, but their picks between 24 and 43 all mover up 2 spots and increase in total value by 153 points, because their remaining picks are now 26, 27 & 34 (+ 43). So they now have 1651 points to match the next bid.
If GC take all 7 of their picks worth points to the draft, their last pick only moves up 1 spot to pick 51, and is now worth 57 points.
Edit: A bid at pick 1 leaves GC with 1249 points after the draft order is adjusted.

Also, I believe Uwland and Patterson are being over rated. Maybe it's relative to this draft class as well.
Uwland projects to be a good player, but for me, he's more Braeden Campbell, though not as good a kick, than Errol Gulden.
Patterson has a fair higher bust rate than is being discussed.
Alternatively I believe Jai Murray is being underrated, and would have him as the third rated GC kid in this draft.

I remember watching a Suns v Lions academy game at U18 level* in 2023, and Murray just killed us with his best Harley Reid impersonation, playing as a high half forward, rotating through the middle.
Both teams played a mix of U16's to U18's.
Every touch just killed us. Precession kicks into the forward 30, fend offs, kicking goals, runs down the wing and through the middle of the ground.
He was the most damaging player on the field from about 15 touches and 5 goals, and I swore he was going to be a top 3 pick.
*I posted about Murray on the draft board recently, and seeing you guys talking about him, I went back and found my post on our board about the first game I watched him.

The problem with Murray is that either he goes before this pick, or makes it through, but the Suns have the points to match.
Probably need a pick in the 20s to have a chance at nabbing him.
