So no matter how disruptive, how it may have effected other players or regardless of what they may have done, you will keep a player?

Fair to say you see it different to me
And yet some here have posted we have players apparently advocating for him staying, including the possible next captain. If true it’s all rather curious.

The issue is that everyone has a different opinion about what is bad or really bad. To some people, drugs are unacceptable; to others, they’re just a part of life and experimentation. Some only learn by making mistakes, while others take advice and avoid making too many.

In my time, I’ve known all sorts — from thieves, liars, gamblers, and drug users to the most successful types and great family men. And I have known many from both sides to change, for better or worse.

The only types I’ve ever known to never change are those with no remorse — the ones who actually get a kick out of taking advantage of or hurting others. These types are usually highly intelligent and manipulative (a bit like player-managers :p).
The other types are repeat offenders who aren’t the sharpest tools in the shed and mess up simply because they don’t make good decisions.

We don’t know exactly what he has done, and half of what people are hearing is through the grapevine.
I’m not excusing his actions, but if he hasn’t broken the law and it’s more of a moral issue, then if the club and players choose to accept him and he’s genuinely turned a corner, I’ll accept that too.

A couple but certainly not the whole group or even close to most

I know people want him to stay and that’s fine but reality is it’s highly unlikely

Couldn't disagree more.

Elijah is exactly what we need. I hope we keep him.

He is paid to play football. He is an excellent footballer. Let's get him playing good football for the club and move forward.

Forever and a day great teams have managed and supported younger footballers with off field issues. You do that because you reckon the importance of keeping them connected and wanting to improve your side. I don't think Elijah has gone past the point of no return. If he had, we wouldn't be talking about train on opportunities
You've obviously never played team sport

Difference is you seem to be considering ability only. If it was the only issue I would have him on our list any day

I always look at group and overall effect especially those around him and the club as a whole. We are a club trying to establish standards and his have been deplorable. He has players and staff off side. What message does that send to the group if he gets a 3rd or 5th chance? It’s not as if he just had a night out on the drink.

TBH with the stuff he has done (and I’m not sure I have been told the whole picture) I would have told him to bugger off. My gut feel is if he was a lesser talent he would have been

If it were simple we would definitely keep him. Talented and under contract.

The fact he has been delisted, paid out and no one else has wanted him says it all to me

Just my opinion

That is the issue there. That is not how you set standards. It shoudn't matter if he the star player or someone that has never gotten a game. The same should be applied across the board.

Without knowing what has gone on apart from what has been reported and some early on rumours, I have no idea what he has done. I hope he does turn it around, and gets back on the list and becomes a 200+ gamer for us - like most, I love a good redemption story.

If the playing group is divided on him I don't want a disruptive influence involved ,how many chances does he get purely because he is one of our best 18?
I don't know what he has done but the fact we were willing to give him away and no takers means he is probably trouble.

I was more responding to this bit:

Also, is he what we need? If we have one spot left over the summer I would think a KPP would be more of a need?

A guy who can kick the ball - yes that is definitely what we need.

I get all the attitude issues but the other way to look at it is - what a great opportunity for a Travis Boak to come in and take a player from the scrap heap and help turn his life around. And save a talented guys career.

love this. living with walshy would make anyone want to run through a brick wall for the jumper
Sounds like a positive but knowing Walsh's love for a Beer and Lij's issue with alcohol, will it last?
However, Might actually be a good thing for Walshy too, knowing EH's issues, might make Walshy think twice about indulging.

Hearing Lij is living with Walshy and has completely done a 180. He has been an absolute pro for the last 4 months.
Heartening to hear.

He has four or five months to keep it up, and get fitter than he has ever been.

List balance is going to play a part. He might get a chance should he spend that period with us. I applaud the club for going through with the delisting, not giving him a reprieve and giving him a summer of temptation to lapse. It would have been better financially to keep him on the books, but it sends a message to him, and to the list.

If he cuts and takes an opportunity elsewhere so be it. If he toughs it out and earns a place through sheer hard work and discipline power to him. He needs to hope we have a list spot vacant should this eventuate.

(Starting to suspect that we may just settle on Ethan Phillips as a likely KPD depth option through SSP. IF Lij excels through the period he may encourage/force us to give him a reprieve and run the gauntlet with talls)

The flip side of that argument shouldn't have anything to do with how a player uses recreational drugs & alcohol.
Sure, I get it's a pressure cooker and players are allowed to blow of steam, but there is also the issue of how you do it.
Being a VERY public figure, and going out to popular night spots loaded is not a good idea.

It's the impact they have on society through their behaviour, especially if they are out and involved in the community representing the club.

I've heard an interview on SEN with a coach of the juniors saying that 'nose beers' use is already rife.
I'd put a lot of that down to Muppets like Bailey Smith not giving 2 ****s about who they are influencing/damaging with their man-child mentality social media posts.

Don't know what 'Lij's issues are but if that muppet Smith is openly let off with fines and 'talks' by the AFL, what does that say about it?

The way I see it's important to note EH was not terminated for breaching his contract.

And if you take at face value what he admitted to in the article he went through some sht last season, it got the better of him and he turned to alcohol.

But also important to note he said he hoped to get back to Carlton to repay some of the debt he owes.

Take that and the fact that he is now training his ass off - I'm happy the club is giving him another chance.

What is flicking players out the door achieving for us exactly? Stocker, Williamson, etc. We've dumped players in the past and we've still got a pisspoor culture.

Bucky had a good point on one of his podcasts.

Elijah came to us as damaged goods with some well publicised baggage. In hindsight, we were probably one of the worst clubs he could have come to with a piss poor culture that even Voss had to address at the B&F count.

Not saying that he's the innocent party, but both sides are not blameless with the situation we find ourselves in.

By all reports, Elijah is doing everything he possibly can to prove to the club that he's worthy of another chance. So far, we haven't seen any early signs of the club improving its culture - and in fact after the Captain Carlton fiasco, it just seems like business as usual at their end.

They aren’t. Hasn’t been decided yet

Can people deal in facts?

I’d love for the kid to get his life together, become a star for us but there is a long long way to go yet and many hurdles to jump. Not least being us having a spot come February and then us selecting him

What was the culture like before Elijah arrived at the club?

Wright started 15th August. Give him a chance

The fact we moved Charlie on, made McGovern sweat, delisted Elijah and others says a lot to me and we have started to change things

As for Elijah he has been delisted. That must hurt. If he comes back he will need to earn it and will be on our terms. IMO another positive

We know he's broken the law previously and that can 100% be forgiven (for the vast majority of laws). If it's a moral issue, where he has betrayed a teammate or group of teammates, I'd say that's a harder one to get past.

Fingers crossed he can train with the club over summer and earn another crack.

Soap, do you think the deferred decision is to see whether he slips up again, or giving him a second chance to prove how committed he is to working hard and training.

I mean if it came down to one spot being available in February and it was a choice between Will White and Elijah - who do people think should be selected?
