2025 List Management Discussion - Part 5

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Bit of a perfect storm. Lots of debate about worth on field. I think he has been fine in a generally mediocre team.
However with the advent of Bassat and his determination to give the first nations players some real comfort and prominence at the club, he has been instrumental in being an elder and leader of the now 7 indigenous players, with both Henry and Ryan sighting him as someone whom they wanted to play with.

Hill and Wood are the two players on our list who have had extraordinary offield value.

Wood was crucial in Nas (amongst many other others) taking to the step to becoming a disciplined and focused professional footballer.

Both have had a huge impact in developing our list.

Aleer had a three year contract on the table from the Giants.

Now, the conspiracy theorist in me asks why offer him a 3 year deal when, as it turned out that he was staying they actually immediately reduced the years and money - I believe? I’m sure someone will correct me if I’m wrong.

They knew the Saints were interested and figured if the Saints believed he was good enough to get offered a 3 year contract, that we’d pay up more.

Hey, maybe a ridiculous supposition, but it’s pretty boring around here right now. 🤣

Edit: having just now read nikkig98 comment confirming it, it appears I was on the money re contract length.
The new Gws contract for Aleer was 2 years @ 200k per season l believe.

Hey Dr Spaceman can we get a Binns chicken with gringo bonce on it?
The trouble is it would not be gringo’s bonce but rather the bonce of one of the club’s most honoured and respected players on that bin pickin’ bird.

Just wouldn’t seem right 🤷

Don't think we really need him with Dow, Carrol and Byrnes on the list and Fincher to come in (presumably)
He’s an elite runner but other than that he’s not quite up to scratch.

His kicking and contested work aren’t great but he can find plenty of ball outside linking up. I think he’ll find a new club but I doubt we’d have much interest.

Been catching some long haul flights lately and ran the salary cap numbers post trade period.

I'm predicting we get a $1.4m a season free agent or trade target next offseason and we will still be ok.

Could be, but they are so much alike we couldnt fit them both into the F50 and I doubt Ben would want to play at FB. Ben most likely ends up at Collingwood or Essendon IMO they have been into him for sometime.

Sam Walsh or Zac Bailey would be my choices.

Listening to the Jackson Warne podcast Max indicated they both played in the same forward line for a while before being drafted. He described them as having an innate sense of where each other was and mentioned that Ben would hit him up without even looking.

Like some Pale Amazonian Krakouer Brothers.

Let’s get a bit of White Magic happening at RSEA Park 🤪

The relationship between the National Draft and Rookie Draft and Primary List and Rookie List means its not a straight 6 in / 6 out scenario.

We had to trade Steele, and now delist all of Jones, Byrnes, and Schoenmaker to take the minimum 3 picks to the ND.

Webster, Cordy, Heath, Steele the only players moving off the Primary List, covering our 4 traded in players, therefore the 3 delistings are needed to have 3 picks at the draft.

McLennan and Boyd were cut from the rookie list, and with Caminiti needing to be upgraded, means we will have a minimum 3 picks at the rookie draft.

Given how poor of a draft it is we might leave a spot open for midseason 2026. I could also see us rookieing Schoenmaker for the exact same reason.

Blah blah blah list spots.
Old news.
Instead of Schoey we are rookieing Byrnes.
Reckon we leave Hall on rookie list, there is no way we are taking 3 rookies in such a shallow draft, let alone 4.
Can 100% see us taking Fincher, a slider, and then upgrading Caminiti, and then taking only 2 rookies, and leaving one spot for train ons / MSD.

I feel like we're a certainty to get Walsh as a free agent next year. We've been into him for so long and there's a pretty well trodden path to Moorabbin for him to follow.
Just need to have a better season than Carlton, which we should given recent player movements.
I don't rate Walsh that much, I feel like he dominates teams like North, while after the big matches he's "carrying a back". But I think he's coming.

I think the uproar was more that Aleer was out of contract with no clear home while Merrett and Marshall both had security behind their moves.
I’ve thought about this and I think you’re putting more on the line nominating a club when within contract versus when contract is ending.

From memory, and could be wrong, GWS put an offer to him early for three years on decent coin, but subsequently (great word) changed to a much reduced offer term wise and payment wise. Surely this is the headline as to why GWS seemingly took advantage of the situation without consideration for Aleer or the integrity of their initial offer, all the while saddling the high ground against the Saints.

The mainstream journalists are just shit.

Scott Watters
I can't remember, but didn't he have some disagreements about the way things went into 2013, with the 're-build' policy? St Kilda were still competitive in 2012. (9th, 12 wins and 123%)
I think Watters wanted to make tough decisions with the list at the time, and saw a rebuild as the logical step, but weak administration got wobbly in the knees about it and found it easier to boot the coach than ruffle the feathers of a few senior players- sort of the traditional Saints solution to ensure ongoing failure. Anyway..onwards and upwards in 2026.

Would think we'll be a massive chance when Carlton inevitably finish bottom 6 again next year

Fincher + another
Not unhappy with that.
Ronnie will be very good depth, but it probably means they have their eye on someone else as well.
