We should have bid on him. Painfully obvious he was and is the best of the 21 class. The extra 3rd rounder we got sent a message…
This. We were far too keen to blow smoke into JHF's ear as the number 1.

We need to play nasty - should have bid on both Daicos and Darcy

While I'd rather him be playing in Blue and White instead of Red and White, I don't begrudge a player wanting to stay in their home city/state. Would you feel better or worse if he wasn't part of the Acadamey and opted for the open draft rather than nominating us?
No, **** that. No player should have the guaranteed right to play in their home state, that's the only way the draft is fair. If you want to nominate you have to accept that you might do a stint in another city.

Isn’t that what the father-son rule often achieves though? A son will often play in the same state he grew up in.

I’m saying I understand him picking Sydney over us, the same way Sheezel picked us (first Vic team with a pick) instead of WC (told them he’d go home). Say Blakey entered the open draft, would we have picked him at 8 instead of Thomas? Now for sure, back then, probably not. Still a good chance he ends up in Sydney at 10.

Was it as cut as dry as that? I thought there was a smidgen of talk around Daicos having a defined ceiling, (albeit very high) whilst JHF, with his collection of traits, was a potential ceiling breaker, but with a lower floor

They added a cash bonus for the #1 pick to try to discourage teams making teams match a #1 pick. Also doesn't look as bad for the AFL if it's just pick 2 or 3 every year that's pre-spoken for instead of 1...

Daicos is outstanding but how he shadow umpires the game annoys me. Constantly telling the crew what he has seen/what they should call and because he is the Crown Prince they generally do exactly what he says. I guess you love it is if he is on your team but to me he is the school sneak and it detracts from his status.

Agreed. But results are results. Apart from Darcy, Daicos is the best player in that draft, and has already achieved more than the rest of the top 5 combined.

No arguing with Daicos’ performance. I do wonder if in this draft the succession of double picks is going to mean that we do see bids starting early (pick 2) and continuing relentlessly to make clubs like Gold Coast, Carlton burn more points than they would hope and maybe not be able to match all their linked players. Other have-nots being more aggressive due to the unique first 8 run could make the draft more interesting.

Damn, that sounded very much like he is going to Sydney.

Another reason why we need to start the year well next year, going to be more appealing coming to north if we are winning games of footy.
Clarko needs to get on a plane and go show the kid some love. Young fella about to get his P's, work some back channels and park a mazda in his driveway.

I don't think it was as cut and dry as one being better than the other, but I do remember Noble saying words to the effect of they wanted to reward JHF and make him an unquestionable #1 pick instead of diluting his achievement by bidding and making him a #3 pick instead.

Which both with foresight and hindsight is one of the dead set most ****ed choices ever. That to me demonstrated we weren't ruthless. We didn't want to make others pay. Stunningly poor decision

Mentions Koby LeCras as the nephew of Mark - is he the son of Brent? Is that another Roos almost-father-son to add to the list?

EDIT: I am idiot and have looked at the Spoiler.

Spoiler alert:
he is Brent's son.
Almost all clubs have "almost-father-sons". It's not a story.

Of course. And there's a long list of FS that just aren't good enough across the league as well, that's also not a North-only thing.

But in this dead space between the GF and draft night we have to entertain ourselves with something on Big Footy, and it might as well be playing the "what if" game.

I do.

But I'm still bored during the day and there's only so many times you can crow about being so far ahead of the rest of the comp before it turns into too much of a circlejerk IMO.

Fair enough.

The North girls being unstoppable is entertaining me though.

Looking at  current father sons in the league:

These clubs have genuine weapons because of father-son as in top shelf in their position:

Brisbane
Collingwood
Dogs
Crows
Dees
West Coast

These clubs have decent but unexceptional father-son players:

Port
North
Hawthorn
Geelong

Everyone else has none or nobody really holding down a regular spot, give or take.

So we're mid tier on this one. You could maybe mount an argument we've been slightly hamstrung by being obliged to take some father-son players ahead of canvassing better suited prospects.
