So is the only allowed to use two picks to match the bid definitely gonna be a thing? Apparently this would mean we’d need to give up picks 8/10, 7/11, 6/12 and so on if he goes #1 which is going to be a tough ask!

Afterpay model.😏

Though I think Cochrane might not go No.1 for optics.

We probably broke the AFL over this and now they will change the rules again afterwards to stop us for future players.
I think it’s more likely that there is now finally a process to confirm aboriginality that is acceptable to every legitimate interest and can stand up to any sort of challenge or scrutiny. It will be the way it’s done for everybody in future. Dougie is the prototype which they had to get right.

Can't help but wonder whether it has anything to do with the treaty being officially accepted. Seems too much of a coincidence otherwise.

Surely it's too late to change that for 2026 now - teams have alreaded traded future picks based on the current rules.

So knowing the AFL, they'll do it.

It does feel a bit set for Port to get a couple of first rounders for Butters that are forced to be used for Cochrane in a way they wouldn't have been any time before 2026.

If the last place team put a bid on him, we would have to match 3000 points minus the revised discount of 10% (or 300 points) so we would need to find 2700 points

If he goes pick 2 (after Carlton's Walker) - the 2nd last team put a bid on him we would have to match 2481 points minus the revised discount of 10% (248pts), so we would need to find 2233 points

note: - the AFL did reduce the discount from 20% to 10% starting this year

let hope that the last team put a bid on Carlton's Walker thus allowing Dougie to be pick 2

dont forget we have Carltons 2026 second round pick could be between 621 points - pick 24 or 454 - pick 30)
to go with our full list of picks for 2026

Intruding, apologies, but given we’re likely to be shit I’ve a vested interest in this.

If the rules go ahead re: 2 pick cap on bid matching you’re likely to need some points combination like this should the 10% discount remain at pick 1

Jeepers there's some angry people over this decision, they range from 'experts' on DNA to spare ones at a wedding.. truly frightning.

Bunch of morons making out like we’re rorting the system when all that has happened is that we finally have had our nga system brought up to match the rest of the non-expan teams a decade late…

Having seen a bit of him at junior level here it’s a fantastic outcome for you guys and the right decision but not sure why it took them so long to make it.
I’d think he stays at Centrals and then after the champs he will get a 4 game “loan” period at the Magpies and then go back and play finals at Centrals if they make it.
Essendon are almost locks for bottom 4 next year and will definitely bid on him IMO but that will only cost you a first and small change to match

The Commission meeting was on 31st October re changing NGA rules post 2025, so this is relatively quick action by the AFL.

In Twomey's story he states;

The AFL faced a similar decision in 2023, when Ryley Sanders' process of Indigenous identification took many months before he was added to North Melbourne's Next Generation Academy in his draft year.

That year, under previous NGA rules, the club wouldn't have been able to match a bid on Sanders given his status as an early pick, but with the rules now open for matching bids at any point of the draft, Port Adelaide will be able to access Cochrane next year. [that link is to the 2nd August 2024 big rule changes for more than just NGA players]

The AFL will be tightening its bidding system next year
and has advised clubs they are likely to be able to use two picks to match a bid, with other controls dependent on ladder position likely to also be included in the next iteration of the system.

However the League's decision on Cochrane's NGA status means the Power will be able to select him at the draft, with the unique talent the early favourite to be the No.1 pick in 2026.
