North Melbourne don't have anywhere near the draft capital to make this happen. And there is no way Weston-Turner can go into the open draft without a multitude of other clubs snapping her up well before North have a pick. North will need to part with a very good player, full stop.

Rather familiar.

The AFLW want to improve its competition they are not doing a great job doing so the Rich get Richer and the poor get poorer

Get what we can I only want players that want to play for this great club

Western Bulldogs forward Kristie-Lee Weston-Turner has informed the Club of her desire to be traded to North Melbourne.

Weston-Turner represented the red, white and blue across two seasons after being selected as the No.1 draft pick in 2023.

Given her outstanding attributes as a young key position player, the list management team will work to ensure that any deal is in the Club’s best interests.

The AFLW Trade Period will officially open this Thursday 4 December.

Problem is I don't think the AFL care enough about it to actually address the situation. They've proven this much since the competition's inception and it's not all that surprising that a Frankenstein team like North can be bred in the current climate.

Meanwhile, article after article on AFL.com.au about the Kangaroos side being amazing, record conquering, a bigger consecutive streak than any men's side has managed in 130 seasons etc etc like that's a good thing in a competition that is meant to be growing and attracting new fans.

I'm sure it's great for North fans but it's certainly not for anyone else interested in the competition (also find it rather ironic that North are the 'rich' in the AFLW, given their current standing in the men's game).

They need to do away with the salary tiers. Do you stay at a struggling club or move to the undefeated back to back premiers for the exact same money? At least doing away with the tiers would let teams overpay to draw talent.

Why have we seen this massive talent drain though.
The perennial top tier teams haven’t had anything like this have they ?

Perhaps I should whisper this but, I don't think KLWT vindicated her high draft position at all. McDonald is already the player I hoped Weston-Turner would become. She was available for selection for most of this season and barely got a look in. She showed a couple of glimpses in her first season, but struggled overall. She may well develop into a decent player but, as it stands, we can't say that her leaving the club will have any impact at all on our performances. It's not like losing a good, solid player like Gabby Newton, or a gun like Conti.

Not her fault of course (I blame Mr and Mrs Weston-Turner) but for efficiency purposes, I'm glad that we are getting a double double-barrell name off our list

The league couldn't give a single shit about a competition that is nothing but a tokenistic nod to an agenda that its spent a lot of energy walking back. Only an origination as inept as the AFL could squander all of the good will that the AFLW managed to build up since its inception.

They're happy that they can trumpet the story of the Norf AFLW behemoth at the end of a season that most people had as much awareness of as people outside of this niche thread do of this post. The reality of this ineptitude is a completely hollow league that is devoid of any real growth.

It's telling that the AFL interest in the league has wained in parallel with most corporate entities as they've walked back their corporate faux progressive agendas. As soon as they sniffed the changing political climate and the noisy backlash to such whitewashing. So that they could get back to their Raison d'être.

Making money. Something that the AFLW will never do.

It will be interesting to see what the AFLW do here. Nathan Burke made mention that we had a number of trades lined up during his tenure that were vetoed by HQ. Now we have a situation where the No. 1 Pick from 2 years ago wants to move to a team that hasn’t lost for 2 years. Does HQ veto this one also, or do Norf need to pony up and give up the equivalent of a Top 5 pick? Most likely scenario will be we are offered Norf’s first rounder (Pick 18 or so) and the status quo continues.

Yet GWS, Pies and Gold Coast have been given Assistance packages this year. Yet we continue to get raided and the club got sweet **** all
Why are they all getting assistance packages? The league is new as, give it time to catch up. Right now the Lions and Roos hoard all the talent. Hard to compete with right now for any team. Not surprised with the GC and GWS being the AFL's nepo babies. But the Collingwood one doesn't make sense given they have only had two seasons down the bottom, improved this year and were not even the worst Vic team.

Makes more sense then, especially from the GWS side of things. Didn't realize they were that bad. It initially sounded like Collingwood and GC were getting extra draft picks, compromising the draft. But extra list spots, meh! Give them five for all I care.

Hopefully this year we get somewhat decent returns for our players who want out.

It should be no surprise that a player that THE club rated as the No.1 pick and then didnt play, would ask for a trade.

And as for her asking to go to North Melbourne and people saying the AFL have to veto it, what a load of crap.

Either North put up something of real value, or she goes in the draft

I’ve pretty much checked out of AFLW. The only reason I pay the slightest bit of attention is because of my allegiance to the RW&B.

It has been so badly curated from the moment it expanded beyond the only two clubs that showed real pioneering commitment to women’s football- us and Melbourne FC. I thought by now they might have achieved a bit of equilibrium but that’s clearly not the case.

Fk the AFL.

I feel the same, losing all of those players with not much in return, killed it for me. Fifteen players who were in the Grand Final on Saturday are in their third club.

And yet they shower North with praise as if they’d built their list of invincibles from the ground up. Shades of North winning its first two flags when it bought a premiership winning list in the mid 70s on the back of the short lived “10 year rule”.
