Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn: Ollie Greeves

**** he was good, before the Achilles was an utter beast

Opposition supporters still don’t realise how good Roughy was. He could play anywhere. While I hated the compo pick we got for Buddy, but even before hindsight, Rough and Cyril were the 2 players I never wanted to leave. I was more comfortable losing Buddy.

I agree.
He's gonna start as a forward-mid.
Zero concerns about his tank in this role.
That role is entirely built around running. Even more so than a straight midfield role.

Moore, Croc and Ginni don’t stop running all game. Especially when AFL defenders won’t have any problems going against Greeves’ height and weight.

I reckon he’s like Huss where inside mid is his shot to make it and he’s just got to work his butt off to iron out his deficiencies so his strengths can shine.

I think the Chad and I was referring to more of Danger/Dusty forward mid.

There's a big difference between 2024 Greeves and 2025 Greeves.
I'd say +5kgs of difference.

If he can trim down to the 2024 size, that should help with his running technique and endurance.
He did not look like a lumbering type in 2024.

Personally I feel that’s even less likely to happen. Given he’s got to be good in the middle to warrant a place over the current mids and damaging enough forward to go ahead of our plethora of small forwards.

I also still don’t see him having the game to trouble defenders at AFL.

I know it's been said in lots of different ways but a simple reflection: whatever question marks there may have been about endurance, defensive mindset or off-field matters, for example, how does someone who dominates elite competition amongst his peers fall so hard so quick.

Perhaps 'group-speak' took hold, but I hope & believe they were wrong. (In a prelim. in Coates, a kid gets 35 & kicks 4 ... you'd pick 'im sight unseen).

and Sammy spent some time with him at the end of the session kicking both sides and ball handling both sides

You're taking forward-mid to mean high half-forward like the players you mention, which is not what I mean at all.

Play him deeper as a medium/tall marking option.
Then he attends a few stoppages, centre bounces etc

He's gonna be an impact mid for the first few seasons.

In 2006, there was a kid called Dean Kelly that kicked 6 goals for the Oakleigh Chargers in a winning Grand Final. Kelly was a prolific ball-winning midfielder who could drift forward and regularly hit the scoreboard. He went undrafted.
At that stage, all 16 teams didn't think Kelly's game was good enough to transition to AFL level.

Clubs clearly had their concerns with Greeves, but he has been given an opportunity to prove himself on an AFL list. From what I've seen, there's plenty to work with, he appears eager to learn and prepared to put in the hard work. That's a very good starting point.

When tyring to build muscle you often have to bulk up first and then you trim the bulk and retain most of the strength. Its extremely hard for AFL type athletes to build strenght due to the amount of cardio. Lots of players come back from pre season 'bigger' but as the season goes on they lose some of that. Wouldn't read much into his bulking, may have been part of the program of getting strength for the next step (just my views, no info).

The story as to why he slipped in the draft is circulating in some circles although it tends to miss one part of the story. Sometimes in life it only takes one person to circulate a negative view and if you do not ask the person who is the target for their side of the story you can make mistakes. Never assume anything is correct before you verify.

Clubs committ hundreds of thousands of dollars in taking these kids on, after many mistakes due to character issues in the early days of the draft, clubs take character very seriously. Got told a story yesterday re a high pick who liked to steal from his team mates as an example. Head of recruting admitted he should have seen problems after meeting the family.

The joys of recruiting.

I have read your previous posts about Greeves.

You seem very familiar with him and sympathetic to OG's circumstances.
Why do you think he will overcome his so-called deficient tank?

One thing that stands out to me from his 2025 highlights, is that although he may not seem to explode from the contest, he is quick to make a decision once he gains possession of the ball. And usually he executes well, finding a teammate. Having foot-speed is great, but if you can’t get the ball and you can’t dispose of it, it’s useless. Greeves at least has no trouble finding the ball and usually makes good decisions with ball in hand. In that respect, he’s already a step ahead of others.

That's a good observation Mitch.

I think a reverse to this is Finn. He has good pace and elite endurance; however, he is neither quick with his hands or mind. I do believe Finn can still make a positive contribution in the ones, but it will be a role to suit his strengths and minimise the weaknesses. (same as most I suppose :) ).

At least is seems Ollie knows how to find the ball and has elite disposal skills, therefor has many tools to make it..........does he have the extreme desire/commitment like Finn?

Could see him becoming a [PLAYERCARD]Jordan De Goey[/PLAYERCARD] type. JDG also tested very poorly at combine for both speed, agility and endurance IIRC (well below average for both). Did quite well on vertical leap testing.

My bad for reading it that way.

Still I can’t see him being a medium/tall marking option. One we have so many players ahead of him in that role, two I just don’t think he’d be enough of a threat to warrant it.

He’d be much better playing VFL getting as much midfield time in as possible trying to refine his game.

The rookie ..... Ollie Greeves.... 17 pages.

The 4 draftees... 6-7 pages each.
Post trainings, I've noticed that Ollie is one of the most popular players getting attention from the supporters.

Probably the most attention among all the draftees, and he seems liking it.
