from the Crows website and last night's Awards...

Marinoff finished ahead of key defender Chelsea Biddell, who was runner-up with 285 votes, and fellow leadership group member Anne Hatchard who was third with 279.

Hatchard was also honoured with the Player’s Player Award, further recognition of her impact in a season where she moved into the forward line following injuries to key players, kicking a career-high 10 goals for the year. She also averaged 17.9 disposals and 5.1 marks.

I guess there's lots of factors that go into a decision like this and Whitfort will turn 27 before the start of next season, which I definitely think plays against any player (that's not a star) when a club commits to a rebuild. 27yo Steven May was contracted to us for the 2019 season, but we chose to trade him for pick 6 and we used that to draft Ben King.

Could May have helped us in terms of not being so bad in 2019? Sure. Would that have been the best decision for us long-term? I don't think so.

Now you could say the recruitment of Hatchard goes against that, but I think Hatchard provides something different to Whitfort. Hatchard comes from the most successful AFLW program in the league and has won three premierships, been named in 4 AA teams, 3x club B&F (including one in a premiership season), best on ground in a GF, played over 100 games etc. Her wealth of accomplishments, knowledge and experience is going to be massive for our young players!
You could bring in Hatchard (27) and still keep Whitfort :) Even the club said that AFL assistance will allow us to keep mature players.Performance team, coaches need overhaul.

I guess Whitfort will get more money.

Not that I am really bothered. The women program looks like a total mess. Getting in better shape would be my first step.

Maybe Whitfort wanted to leave/go home to Melbourne? Who knows. There's so much that goes into these kinds of decisions and we only get a portion of the truth.

This just proves she's a star. How exciting to welcome her to the fold!

Huge mistake! The Suns don't need another overrated, slow, big bodied, and unfit player. They have too many already.

So with your 3rd post on BF.....you chose to go onto another Club's board and rubbish their selection process.......
You're off to a blinder....good luck for the future.

Thanks for your input. Probably a good thing that no one can read it.

Surely they would have wanted to keep Whitfort so she must have been OK with a move back home. The timing was good at least since we actually need draft picks this year.

The biggest thing with Hatchard (and Phillips for sure and Mithen I guess) will be standard setting. If you pay attention to any of the commentary around the W it is clear there is a solid gap between those teams that have both a committed playing list (the minimum is not enough) and a committed organisation (not lip service but resources and effort and access).

Brisbane is a clear example. They keep losing players they want to keep but they stay in the top 4. That is whole of list and whole of organisation buy-in. Note that they also 'lose' players they don't really want to keep.

See how we go on standard setting but if it does not work it won't be for lack of ambition. On paper, Phillips and Hatchard are top shelf gets.

Riley Beveridge

Gold Coast now plans to send Pick 14 from the Anne Hatchard deal and a future second to Melbourne for Picks 17 and 27.It's set to leave the Suns with Picks 17, 19, 20, 21, 22, 27 and 32 (with more room to move) to secure their raft of talented Academy prospects

I think losing Whitfort is not great. They could use as much experience as they can get with the amount of youngsters coming in. Don’t know that it’s going ‘home to Melbourne’ for her…folks live on the Sunny Coast. Few others will possibly go yet and I think it’s their choice to go.
I agree with Jirik13 that Whitfort would have been better to keep than Rowbottom…better skills and reliability out of the middle. But perhaps Hatchard will bring that.

I hope the incoming academy players do live up to the hype. Suns have placed lots of hope in them for the past 4-5 years at least…hasn’t really worked out yet.

And agree with the commentary about standards needing to be better…but that needs to come from the coaching and strength and conditioning staff. Was severely lacking this year with the team underdone before the season even started. I understand the women’s S&C head is going to the men’s program next season - hope they don’t go backwards.

Doesn’t matter. We deserve more than a 3rd rounder for her
I don't disagree but I don't think anyone was going to offer better than that. The deal was done very late.

The club did the right thing by her letting her go for a third round pick, rather than making her stay, and then prioritising the kids and not selecting her to play. I think she is a big loss with such a young group.

Yep, they did the right thing by Dupay.
They must have their eye on some late round talent that they really want a list spot for since not having Dupay will make us worse next year.

Anyway, two positive things to look for:
  1. We will set the record for the youngest selected team and list in AFLW history and fair dinkum that might never get broken.
  2. Next year will be super fascinating. We might be rubbish but it will be interesting. Really really need some of the 2nd and 3rd year academy girls to play better.
