He's one of the best. Would you prefer Tom Hawkins, Jordan Lewis or Jack Riewoldt?
Hawkins is a year in. I got no issue with Jack and he doesnt feel the need to interject himself at every opportunity.

Jordy sucks but honestly id have him on par with Derm.

The Sunday graveyard with Derm and Kelli was ear bleeding stuff.

In any event im not really talking about my specific opinion of Derm i genuinely thought the general consensus was he was average to poor.

He tends to go off script and start rambling like a drunk uncle talking politics in the middle of a telecast but at least he's got a bit of character about him. Jack Riewoldt, Brownie, Lewis, Hawk are absolutely terrible. Boring and vanilla.

It's actually a bit of an issue right now. There aren't any really iconic callers coming through. Bruce, Commetti, Rex Hunt, Sandy Roberts etc were voices that were so huge they were as much apart of the game as the players.

Huddo is probably the only one left that isn't shit. Brayshaw tries but he's a so ****ing annoying. BT is like plucking your pubes out with tweezers levels. Drano and Gerald Waterly are even worse. One sounds like he has a 35 IQ and the other is like the embodiment of constipation.

Kelli makes me stressed for her. She just sounds out of her depth. Like me trying to do anything, it's just pure imposter syndrome hoping no-one will notice that she's got no idea.

The others are genuinely terrible. Jack sounds like Simple Jack, Jordy is like talking to your accountant about his holiday in Canberra and Hawk is away with the fairies.

Derm was pretty shit and totally unprofessional but he's part of the furniture. There is comfort in the known quantity.

I’d only really dispute Jack. To me he only really interjects when he’s asked or prompted. He’s fine as a host too.

I’m not saying he’s a star but he’s completely inoffensive imo.

She nearly ruined the final minutes of that Dees game for me.
Mostly, they don’t know when to just shut up and let the game tell the tale.

On the other hand, the woman who did the MMM broadcast at the end of the same game was terrific.

I don’t like those who shout and carry on like Howie and Brayshaw either. Even Huddo sometimes those over the top.

The game should be the entertainment, not the talking heads.

There’s a bit of time and place. Quarters losing his shit over Leo Barry is iconic.

Exactly. When the game is on the line.
Or for iconic moments.
Not before or even after every goal or mid-way through the second quarter.
Or when just trying to make a game sound a lot more exciting than it really is.

When NAS was on the run to slot that last goal I really didn’t care that he was wearing “beautiful blue boots” and that all Saints were hanging out for his signature. Just totally ( nearly) ruined the moment.

People want Jo and SOS to lose their jobs over it lol

Those people are obviously NQR then. The family will be suffering through no fault of their own. Not to diminish the crime committed but this would be absolutely traumatic for the Silvagni family members who have no responsibility for it.

Jo is going to lose her Chemist Warehouse job for sure. What does she do that a million other people couldn't?

She's there to endorse a brand (that is probably disproportionately targeted to women) and now when people see her, a lot them will instantly think of a rapist. She's gone.

SoS will probably be safe. He hasnt committed a crime but its not great having such a high profile club figure defend a convicted rapist. Its his son, I am not going to judge him for it, unconditional love is a hell of a drug. But its not ideal.

Why are people commenting on this matter, it has absolutely NOTHING WHATSOEVER to do with St Kilda FC, leave his mother, father, brothers alone, they'll be hurting enough without Saints supporters joining the media in the pile-on, disgusting as far as I'm concerned:rage:

This will probably get deleted or (ideally moved to another thread) but I believe it’s important to share anyway,

As someone who just went through the judicial system in regard to a trial where there were multiple rape charges (as a support person to the victim-survivor), it will be especially hard for me to support SOS going forward if he continues to defend his son, a now convicted rapist.

It’s one thing to support your kid unconditionally, but after they have been convicted it’s quite disappointing to see them double down on him being innocent. His son is guilty, convicted. They need to stop being in denial and the sooner they do the sooner they can start to properly support their family in the healing process (for whatever that’s worth).

It is incredibly difficult to have rapists convicted, I’ve known of rapists who have hard evidence of their own confession and have still not been convicted. It is incredibly difficult to have the victim survivors feel safe enough to pursue justice, it’s very re-traumatising and often power dynamics remain in play, I even know of high ranking public officials have refused to come forward and give evidence of being r*ped because of how it would effect their careers. The system is extremely, extremely hard to get any justice through.

And yet, his son has been convicted of rape. My heart goes out to the victim-survivor who has shown tremendous courage, and in coming back to the footy side of this, this is a huge issue in our culture and I am saddened to think about how many incidents of sexual assault go without justice, and are further perpetuated. I don’t really care about SOS anyway, but, for his and everyone else’s benefit I hope he is able to process this traumatic event by accepting the truth about his son, as hard as that may be, it’s reality.

Agree its tough situation for everyone involved, particularly the victims in these matters. The court processes can cause nearly as much trauma as the offences themselves.

People are not convicted of these types of offences without over whelming evidence (beyond a reasonable doubt). I have no doubt the family will appeal the decision and in a lot of situations such as these the $$$ overwhelm the system.

I can understand SOS emotionally supporting his son, but to publicly announce they will support him prove his innocence (after conviction), is something that was not well considered. As a parent you can be blinded but what your kids tell you, but the reality is sometimes they do the wrong thing and need to be held accountable.

SOS has done a great job in his role at the club, but if he is going to continue publicly support his son, perhaps he needs to consider stepping down.

Glad to see the back of Derm. Whole bunch I'd like him to take with him.

Some ex players excel and remain in touch with the nuances of the game, Dermott was not one of them. He had become out dated and for a supposed expert commentator he had very little to offer modern day commentary. He simply didnt do the home work to stay updated with modern trends and players.

Jordan Lewis is another ex Hawthorn player who drips with arrogance in his comments and although a lot younger than Dermott is another whose biases dont allow him make a balanced discussion.

SOS has every right to support his son and proclaim his innocence.
Remember, this trial is not complete until the rights of appeal have been exhausted.
Then, and only then, does your post become relevant.

What's to say he is granted an appeal?

There is no way he would have been remanded in custody awaiting sentencing, if the judge thought it was an unsafe conviction.

Plus the Silvagni defence would have lodged an immediate appeal and 90% of these cases they get bail. He being remanded is a wake up call that he needs to accept responsibility.

No parent wants to see the child gaoled, but by SOS publicly defending his innonence, I wonder if the entire family are in denial.

Two words: You’re wrong.
Another two words: Greg Lynn.

I hope for SOS's sake and the clubs he can make peace with what has happened. It is plain to see that Tom is guilty. Just like Minga said, if he is going to be at the front of some kind of "Justice for Tom" campaign then I can't support him. I feel for him that he has had the wool pulled over his eyes by his son, but he needs to come to terms with reality now or move on from the club.
