No one would say "I told you so" if he wins a flag then gets sacked years later

The clear issue is many believe he cannot coach at all and there have been zero results so far to prove he can win a flag

On Mackay, I was 100% correct saying we would never win a flag with him in the side and that his continued selection was indicative of a fundamentally unsuccessful club

I doubt we could achieve that. I think it will be more like Copolla with Godfather part 3. People will just forget that part of his career existed.

I think you’re being too cynical. I’m not saying it’s some miracle cure, and yes, the members will vote in their share of clowns, but at least those clowns will have to face judgement day sooner or later.

It was pointed out just after the match against Hawthorn that 2 things could have been done ( in my opinion ) to at least create a better opportunity and a level playing field

Leaving Berry on Newcombe after 2 walk out clearances was insanity

Not starting Rachele - again my take - left the crowd feeling flat and we all understand crowd buzz and how it translates to on-field performance

Instead Newcombe walks out 4 clearances and Hawks are 3 goals to zip

On the balance of things, the 1 year extension helps manage media pressure.

Say we have a year like '25, a 1 year deal means there is no contract extension talk leading up to finals. He would be in contract for another year and it's just not up for discussion.

Say we have a year like '25 and we did not extend him, there would be a heap of pressure pre finals to extend him, we'd likely cave and give him 2-3 years in the pre finals bye. What if we don't win a final? (Power extended Hinkley pre finals in '23 and then went out in straight sets)

Say we have a poor year, we can just play down any sacking talk with, 'Matthew is under contract for next year'..... then just sack him at the end of the '26 season.

Say we have a poor season and we didn't extend him, the Nicks contract talk would be insane and potentially derail a season that could otherwise still be alive.

This is very sensible.

Good that the “short term” as forecasted in the media last week is just that. A one year is the best result given that they were determined to extend him before the season starts.

All goes bad next year and they just pay him out for 2027. Not ideal, but it’s not their money - they (the board) don’t need to answer to the members and that is s***.

If you had one a final and were competitive in a prelim… you’d be looking at a multiple year extension right now

I’ll edit, I do think it is a reasonably clear sign that there are doubts, otherwise they would have pushed on with a long term extension regardless. And he (Matt) knows the score, finals (and a finals win) is the bare minimum now.
