It would be fake form. There is simply no way his offensive game makes up for the fact that he can’t defend a witches hat. I don’t care if he gets fed the ball 35 times a game. He is not going to miraculously start kicking lasers, break lines or intercept the ball.

My doubts will linger over Clarko, as long as Daniel is in the team. Even if we do take a step and start wining games, it will be in spite of Daniel.

Daniel looked very good in our intra-club games last season too, I remember all the players talking him up and saying how elite his kicking was. But once we played against real opposition that’s when he was brutally exposed.

If he secures a tall defender roll we could use him as our relief ruck. Especially if he is minding the oppositions relief ruck. He just follows him in there.

I remember one or two teams do that last season. Beats playing tremors or Larkey in the ruck.

Been that way for years….we look good until don’t get to play ourselves

Admittedly, Journos have been getting away with stretching very little into a whole article for years.

Daniel clearly can be a defender in a successful side we have seen it done with him already. My knock is you can’t play him and Kerch off the half back line. They are to small to play together and give up to much.

Daniel suffered from 2 things. He often rotated better then our mids to defend so was isolated and caught 1 out more then he should be and poor midfield transition defence.

I don’t think any of our backs last season were particularly bad it was system that was stuffed. Logue could be have moments of brain farts and Dawson is clearly still learning but If we don’t improve transition defence we will continue to lose and do it more often then we are winning.

Na. Daniel was a half-forward when they won the flag. He had a couple of good years in defense and then the game changed, making him largely useless in the role. Firstly, the use of higher or full ground zones took away the space for those accurate 30m passes of his. Secondly, the way to counter the zone is speed out of defense, preferably before it can set up; overlap run, fast territory gain and exploitation of the stand rule. All Caleb can do is dodge and shimmy and hit a short pass to retain possession, but this just buys time for the opposition to set-up. The dogs recognised this and had stopped using Caleb at half-back. They moved him to half-forward / sub well before he came to us.
