It seems odd we’re still paying him and keeping him on the list when he’ll never play for us

If he don’t make the NBA then he’ll just okay college basketball which would pay more than the AFL will ever pay him anyway

Seems like a waste
Cat B comes with its risks. Low cost high reward

I am not sure about the low cost. There was a belief that Cox was low cost. He had an opportunity at Exxon post study and there were around 4 clubs competing for Cox. There were claims as a cat b the out of salary cap cost was around $500,000. Given the financial opportunities for Condon in basketball even now, the amount of currency negotiated I suspect would not be small. The return potential is high.

Good game today 14-7-5 with 3 blocks.
I don't think he has the goods to get drafted into the NBA - but watching him today he could be a star in the AFL.
Far too many other guys his size or bigger in the NCAAA and that will be why I don't see him being drafted in the NBA.
He is a completely different case to Cox as he has already played AFL.
He is very good at body contact and seems to look for it in boxing out which would make it very difficult to move him if he gets set.
He is a very fast mover for a guy his size and imagining that on an AFL ground is scary - for the opposition.
Alex is 4" taller than Roo so good luck matching him up and with his pace could be a very handy CHF.

Yea, have said this before.

His absolute baseline is Mason Cox.

Same height, younger, more athletic, competative and most importantly, was a high-level junior growing up, so has more natural afl instincts.

At worst, he is 25 to 30 goal forward/second ruck, however taking into account everything else, could also be an unplayable forward (similar style but less talented Darcy) or a high-level ruckman.

1 extra year of college ball vs a potential 10 year AFL career with the post career opportunities that come with it, and you think he’ll take the short term option?

…really?

Why only 1 year?

Why only 1 year?
Jen is on the right track but also wrong. Whilst you can 100% go to College for more than 4 years, athletes are only eligible to play for 4 years outside of exceptions for exceptional circumstances. He’s in his 3rd year now, and 4th year players hardly ever get drafted, so if he doesn’t get drafted this year (which is also against the odds as it stands) his choice is 1 year of College ball or go back to Australia and start his AFL career.

The cost is low if you have a large budget that can easily absorb it. The only real costs are those inside the salary cap as they imply sacrifices made somewhere else.

I accept the Cox and Condon deals as good for the potential return. Given the cat b agreements the transition to a full list position could be difficult. They are overpaid and outside the normal player pay scales. It is initially outside the salary cap, it just has to be managed.

Didn’t understand a word of that

You are absolutely imagining how much extra a Cat B player actually does get paid.

If he’s on the cusp of NBA selection, he’ll be good enough to carve out a career in Europe. That will net him more than an AFL wage.

Nup. At worst, he doesn't play a single game. I'd say that if we list him, there is still 30% likelihood on this scenario.

Break even point is probably a contributing second ruck type who kicks a goal every couple of games - let's call that 10-12 goals, while providing a target and contributing in the ruck. I think if he achieves that level, we could live with it. I'd put this at maybe 45% likely

The 25-30 goal scenario is on the more optimistic side - maybe 20%. And the Darcy-level scenario is the moonshot - maybe 2% chance.

By all accounts though AFL will be his next preference. It’s not all about money, it’s about making the NBA itself. So unless he thinks Europe remains a genuine pathway back to the NBA I doubt he’ll go there.

He’s already made it very clear that it’s NBA or AFL, he and Collingwood wouldn’t have made the commitment to each other if that was not the case. Not sure why that’s so hard to understand.

There's less than a 1% chance I agree with this.
