I was initially sceptical/annoyed when Cochrane was linked to Port through their NGA, but i actually think it could work out REALLY well for us. Why ??? Because I doubt there will be a bid on Cody earlier than #3 .....

Why you ask ??? Because the last time an Academy/fs was bidded on with #1 is 2020, with JUH. This is despite having the Daicos/Ashcroft brothers, and Sam Darcy, coming through.

Clubs are HUGELY reluctant to bid at #1 because they don't want to give that title to another club, and I know the system has changed, but the psychology hasn't. #1 gives yhe supporters hope and the sponsors publicity that #2 simply doesn't carry.

Then we have Cochrane at #2 so I can see Cody going at #3.

Who do I think would be selected at #1 ahead of Cochrane and Cody ??? I honestly have nfi ..... but I can't see the wooden spooners from 2026 bidding twice before taking their own selection, basically confirming that they both finished last AND received the 3rd best player for their misery.....

These days I don't think that's as big of a deal as what some people suggest.

Will be interesting how it plays out. Austin, Agresta & co have been very diligent in planning for multiple scenarios on draft night and will be comfortably prepared for a bid as a early as #1 on Walker if it's shaping up that way. Anything later than that should be deemed as a bonus.

The bigger deal is that it should read "big of a deal". ;)

The landscape can change as well in 12 months.

You may get a player who has a really good final year that jumps up the order a la Harry Dean.

Yes, particularly when a side (much like West Coast) is chasing a particular kind of player. One of those 3 Knights KPPs, for instance, might prove good enough that a bid on Walker would be churlish for a team chasing a tall.

The Carlton Football Club welcomes the AFL’s recent re-zoning of Next Generation Academy boundaries and is excited to receive a regional zone for the first time in the Club’s history.

Carlton has inherited a significant regional area that encompasses rich football towns such as Shepparton, Wodonga, Wangaratta, Yarrawonga, Euroa, Benalla, Mansfield and Bright.
The suburb of Carlton will also return to its roots, with the Club now have access to talent within the Carlton radius.

Port Adelaide 2026 NGA Dougie Cochrane to join Port Adelaide's SANFL side immediately.

So when is Cody joining our VFL?
Different rules for Victorian clubs and the VFL due to a thriving U18s competition that is separate, as well as a strong series of school and tier 2/3 state competitions. Cody will have a set allotment of VFL games he can play with us as the - presumably now - 24th man. He might then do the same with Richmond, or another AFL-affiliated VFL side or two.

Between CTL, school/Echuca, and state commitments, he'll be pretty strictly managed. Cochrane will just be flipping between various SANFL levels as they judge it, while dealing with any school and state commitments.

Byproduct of the population of Victoria and the local interest in the game.

Bit like the campo boys playing for Glenelg

With our new NGA Academy region what does 2026 now look like? Are there any north east metro players that were in hawthorns academy that are now allocated to us instead?
Doesn't come into effect until 2028, so won't apply to anyone currently in the CTL mix.

Does that mean we retain access to current academy players that won't be draft eligible until after that date? It seems a funny situation no matter which way it goes.
I doubt it, I'm guessing if there was anyone lined up for that, they would have been released to the new eligible club. There wouldn't be many sure things in that last age group just yet.

At this stage of the process, I'm not thinking about 'sure things' as much I am about 'probables'. I hope we haven't signed one of them over for what we think will be a better deal long term.

Interesting strategy with the NGAs. We've expanded territory with the hopes of increasing productivity in the future. The Tigers have given a lot of real estate away to bring in a small patch in Dandenong that is the centre of the Sudanese community amongst others. Time will tell what works best. It'll no doubt change again anyway.

Every club is in the same boat when it comes to 2028 candidates, some will be luckier than others.

I mean it's really an equalisation strategy overall, so we got more while Richmond got less.

Plenty immigrants in shepparton including Africans
There are probably plenty of workers from overseas that come for jobs in farming and picking. Are they staying and enrolling the kids in school/taking up Aussie Rules? It's been a while since I've been through Shepparton.

They're moving there, not so much to work in farming but for a place to live.
Unfortunately though, the AFL have largely been asleep at the wheel when it comes to junior & local footy, this has left much of the leg work up to the clubs, who are understandably more interested as players grow older & show some promise.
