Ablett Senior. Junior was okay ;) But the things Senior did from Day 1 at Geelong (I can't speak for his handful of games at Hawthorn) was in the words of Bruce McAvaney SPECIAL. He was a freak with a repertoire that I had never seen before. Could leap higher than anyone, he was faster than anyone, uncompromisingly tough, and a beautiful long and accurate kick.

His first game for Geelong was v Fitzroy. In the same game Greg Williams and Mark Jackson debuted for Geelong. Everyone expected Jacko to steal the limelight, but it was Ablett who stole the thunder and was BOG, playing on the wing and roaming HFF. IIRC he kicked 4 goals, took mark of the day and got himself reported and rubbed out.

When my daughter was 4 I took her to the MCG to see Geelong so she could one day say she saw Ablett Senior. Sadly she doesn't remember the occasion... but she is diehard Geelong

Ablett wasn't a natural leader and was not going to amass 40 possessions in a game. But he remains the best player I have ever seen. It was never boring when Ablett played.

For me it has to be a dominant matchwinning forward.

Ablett Snr was spectacular, dirty, skilled and tough all at the same time. Hit and miss when shooting for goal but had so many shots it probably didn’t matter. The one with the most highlights.

Dunstall was the consummate professional. Played to his strengths. Speed on the lead, repeat runs. Strong on the mark without being a high flyer. Deadly accurate shot at goal. Super reliable.

Carey obviously played higher up the ground at times. Strong, vice like hands and took the mark in front of his eyes. Stepped up in big moments and kicked goals. A leader by example on the field.

Lockett was a big unit that like Dunstall was quick on the lead and hard to get around. Had great agility for his size. Great conversion rate and even though he’s loved kicking inside 40, could kick a longer goal if needed. Like Ablett a bit of a dirty brute.

If I had to pick one to watch for the highlights it would be Ablett. If I had to pick one to lead my team it would be Carey. But if I had to pick one to play week in, week out and dominate it would be Lockett, followed closely by Dunstall.

I saw all these players first hand destroy my team multiple times in the 90s and while filthy with my team, was in awe of how good these four were.

Ablett Jr went alright, Carey was unstoppable on his day, but on pure football ability alone, Ablett Sr by some margin, just a mercurial freak.

Russell Ebert & Wanganeen take the honours at Alberton.

Ablett snr the most talented, gifted and spectacular. Kick longer than anyone else, jump higher, run faster, hit harder - all with brilliant ball-handling skills. Good team man? - ahh, well, that's another question.

Lockett played full forward better than any other one-position player played his position.

Thos two stand out for me.
