With respect- that's stating the obvious.

And if you knew anything about Gonski - and why he is so well respected by academics and educators globally - is that he ALWAYS takes a broad approach to his perspectives on education matters - ensuring he lays down clear principles that look at the bigger picture. His will be an evidence focussed assessment of the rise in anti semitism since October 2023, not just in Australia but globally, and a focus on looking for sustainable long term solutions to turn things around.

My guess is that he will settle on a position that is obvious to anyone capable of rational critical thought - that dealing with anti-semitism cannot be done in isolation.

My only hope is that he and others on his Taskforce will be able to overcome the short sighted narrow focus of Jillian Segal and the emotional politically charged search for blame that is currently dominating coverage of the Bondi massacre.

Gonski has a good working relationship with Segal so I think selecting him as Chair for the Taskforce was a deft move by the Government. He is a recognised expert in pedagogy and how formal and informal education fits within the broader social, legal and political structures in Australia and won't be interested in going down bigoted and divisive stereotype driven wormholes.

BTW, these are the same reasons why, imho, a Royal Commission into the events leading up to and subsequent to Sunday's tragedy is a very good thing. Because, depending on who is selected as the Royal Commissioner and the Terms of Reference agreed by the NSW Parliament, it will provide the chance to use an evidence based platform to publicly expose some of the myths and mischaracterisations that have dominated the anti-semitism debate in Australia going back years.

Royal Commissions take years to investigate and report of course. But I think many of those seeking to make political capital out of fear and hatred in the hours and days after the massacre will be getting their own retribution.

You should prepare now to being reminded of this tragedy for the rest of your life. It will be raised before every christmas and if you want to "move on" then you'll have to isolate yourself completely at this time of year, and in that case you'll be reminding yourself. Statues and plaques will be placed at Bondi, and it will become a place of remembrance for the jewish community, especially around now. That is the reality.
