They still are close enough. Jacks isn't a number 8, he's a great short form batsman and bats in the top 6 for his county or at least he used to. We should be treating him line a specialist batter because he's no bowler.

England should be chasing 600 and be 4/350 if their batsmen had a brain.

Interpretation: if only batsmen didn’t get out and if only bowlers didn’t try to get them out then both team would make 1000.

You're contradicting yourself. Both teams can't bat yet a record run chase on the cards with the world's best bowling lineup against you. Great pitch, great game.

Modern pitches just don’t seem to deteriorate. You’d think with the really hot days we’ve had that it would do a serious number on the pitch but it still looks beautiful
