You do realise football was played before 1980's right?

The Bulldogs recently named our all time best 25, with top 5 in order. Top 3 were;
1 - Whitten
2 - Bontempelli
3 - Grant

Hard to argue.

Michael Long and Boomer Harvey could have been in there. I didn't see enough of Long. Joel Selwood also.

You'd prefer people to pretend like they actually watched Jack Dyer play footy?

I did. He was very good at football. He knew how to kick and handball, he was able to put one foot in front of the other, and then the other in front of the original foot, even able to speed that up so he moved quicker, which greatly helped his ability to get the ball.

Watching him breathing in and out, which also helped with his moving around the field was quite a sight, sometimes he was near opposition players and they were in awe, and sometimes he was not near them and they were relieved because of his smell.

Some said at the time that he could drop the ball onto his foot and make the ball go as well as anyone.

I remember that when we talk cricket and someone brings up Bradman.
Apples and oranges. Bradman stats, and the rest of the world agreeing, make him an untouchable. On top of that he played internationals against quality.
You are talking a time when it was part time suburban comp.

Funny how prestigious awards are named after these "part time suburban" hacks - Coleman Medal, Matthews Trophy, Norm Smith Medal,

Rose coloured glasses.

That and no one called them hacks.
Also what’s with the italics? They were part timers in a suburban comp.

You've said Bradman is untouchable, part of the reason being he played internationally against quality. You do realise international cricket meant playing 3 - 4 matches a year. Bradman was a part time cricketer as were his team mates and opposition.

I know the OP changed it to "In your era", but before that, anyone who didn't have Matthews as the best Hawthorn player ever has no idea.

Yet still did it.

Not saying he shouldn’t be but just because someone doesn’t agree with you doesn’t mean they have no idea, especially when it’s a rather large and expansive topic.

Bit of a grey area there. It's not really apples to apples.

You're right saying the cricketers were part time in the sense they all had other jobs. But, it Bradman played an 'away' game he'd travel by sea for a couple of weeks just to get to the right country where his only responsibility was to play cricket and represent Australia. A tour took months.

Bit different to catching a tram from Punt Rd to Junction. The VFL was absolutely a part time suburban competition in every manner.
