Gotta look to the future for Boxing Day.

If the quicks are getting rested then pick some uncapped players. Guys like Doggett and Neser shouldn’t be coming in.

Smith in for Inglis and Connolly/Kellaway in for Weatherald or Khawaja (give him a send off in Sydney I guess). Can probably hang on to Green as well because Webster will just be plugging a hole.

I tried to work it out myself, couldn't. Anyone care to come up with a possible explaination?? Boland looked good before the lunch break.

Hmmm ..... its a challenge, a bit like trying to work out the maths for flat earth theory. So, let's try some bullshit .....

Spinners also can use bounce, Lyon more than many. They may have planned to give Lyon a chance with more seam to grip and a harder ball for the bounce. And just transferred that plan to the next spinner in line with Lyon out.
Its not a good reason to use the part-timer with a newish ball, but the best I have. If correct (almost certainly not) it would - again - show a lack of being able adjust to situations in the field by the Australian side.

Okay. So Ben Stokes > Jesus Christ?

Haha! What even is this pablum?! It reads right from the mouth of some ponytailed tosspot with an MBA who is tapping into that creative writing elective undertaken, whilst attempting to rally the “resources”, with their remaining orifices caked with coke.

Empty, Facebook template dross.

As my mother might say, self-recommendation is no recommendation. Whilst in the practice of reverting to cliches, if history is indeed written by those whom “win” it, then I figure few will remember this strategy as belonging to some renaissance, be it in the greater sense for mankind, as various stuffy, beige adorned Anglia sorts would have it, nor in the cricketing domain.

Heck, I think the Sri Lankan template in the early 90s ODI game, of shifting Tillerkeratne to the top of the order and hitting out against the zone restrictions, with a sustained level of aggression that had not been witnessed previously, was the shift that the Brits could only hope that Bazball could have been, in the way that it influenced the play of teams around them and delivered success. Importantly, though, this philosophy knew when to attack and when to retreat…

Yes, we have been lucky enough to watch England play, Ben. So, so lucky.
Wasn’t it Kaluwitharana and Jayasuria? Still remember thinking WTF is going on here when they were going at 7 and 8 an over opposed to the usual 50 over crawling starts

No we don't. This isn't a freaking football team that can no longer make finals ffs! It's international test cricket and you pick people who are ready and deserve it. The future will take care of itself. Neser should most definitely be coming in if a pace bowler is out.

Good grief I'm seeing some utter horse sh!t here regarding possible changes.

.... Even then surely Green would be preferred and they surely didnt need everyone out to just gift singles. Maybe a part of it was just to test the ego and see if they were willing to do something stupid to try and get 20 quick runs off Head

Don’t know, wouldn’t have been my plan but they’re the only things I think could come into play. Don’t think anyone thought it was wise

That was the only reason I could think of. Based on the undisciplined way England have played through most of this series it was a gamble that had every chance of paying off.

yeah i agree, i think we stick with the squad for melbourne and sydney and add a spinner to the squad.
no soft caps should be handed out.

guys like boland and neser are aging yes, but they would be craving to play as much as they can, with their time running out.

after the sydney test, there is time to reassess the team, with 4 shield games and perhaps providing opportunities to others in a low key top end series v Bangladesh at the back end of the AFL season (in August).

There are however 3 big away tours coming up after that where we haven't won a series for some time (South Africa 2014, India 2004, England 2001).

I’m not saying to send a full XI of 18 year olds out there but there should already be a young bloke in there at 6 or 7 if guys like Webster and Inglis are options, and now is the perfect opportunity to do something like that.

Cummins, Inglis, Lyon out.
Smith, Neser and Murphy in.

Would love to flip Green to Webster as well but doubt we make 4 changes.

Suspect you've hit the nail on the head with these changes.

Agree with you on Green - looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane - selectors love him though, so will be in the team.

I really don't want to lose another match to England just because we wanted to "look to the future". The idea that there's not value in creaming the Poms and treating each and every test match in there here and now because of some vague, nebulous concept of "the future" and if some player plays 1 test now they're going to be an infinitely better cricketer than they otherwise would be in the future just seems strange to me. Boland didn't make a test debut until he was in his 30s. But we (for instance) were giving games to Jackson Bird instead of him around the time that Boland was still a good Shield cricketer and getting Odis, in 2016. But if Jackson Bird, 30 years old then. But Jackson Bird was only a good option as a 30 year old because we picked him on the back of Shield form in the 2010-2012 period. Where does it stop? Bird was playing Sydney Grade cricket a few years earlier. Certainly not likely to be a future test cricketer than some of our fast bowlers that won the 2010 U19 World Cup for Australia, blokes like Jackson Coleman and Alistair McDermott. We should have fast tracked them into higher and higher levels of cricket because youth is youth and all that. Was it wrong for Tasmania to recruit Jackson Bird, an older cricketer, than Jackson Coleman, a younger, talented cricketer, when they were giving fast bowler contracts to players from other states? Etc. etc. etc.

You understand how you can just run yourselves in circles because you plan for a future instead of realising there's a present, because the very nature of time is that there'll always be a future, so you can be forever planning for a future that will never come.

It's an incredibly stupid line of thinking. Trust the fact that Shield and A representative cricket is enough of a preparation for Test Cricket no matter your age, and select a team on a game-by-game basis in that respect. Just pick the best team as you can at the time, bloody hell.

Four changes when 3-0 up feels crazy but three of them are injury-related and the fourth change is one we would have strongly considered anyway.
