Yes - because it’s nigh on a criminal offence to be selected #1 in a draft and not turn into an absolute elite player.

I genuinely don’t get it.

He was never going to be delisted (that’s complete rubbish), and barring injuries, he will play 300 games, which is more than most guys selected at number 1 in a draft.

He himself was absolutely shocked to get selected at number 1 as he knew he wasn’t the most naturally talented.

He was chosen due to his intelligence, character and Robert Shaw’s recommendation (as his school coach) of his leadership qualities.

That’s why he is now their captain.

I wish him well.
Agree. I hate Essendon as much as the next guy (unless the next guy is Dermott Brereton) but I don't understand why some posters on here are repeatedly singling out 1 particular player.

Sure he's not the most damaging player, but he'll notch up 200 games this year and was a rd1 debut and has never left the side and has averaged 20 touches a game his last 7 seasons (was only just shy of that in his first 2).

I think you'd be pretty happy with that to get a 200 game player and a captain from pick 1. They aren't all going to be superstars and many have been duds for various reasons. (watts, mccartin, patton, boyd*, juh, JHF*, scully, kruezer,) That's 8 guys who given very minimum impact to the clubs that picked them. Then you've got a about 8-12 good players in walsh, swallow, gibbs, murphy types that McGrath fits in well with. And then the Rowell, Hodge, Reiwoldt, Delidio group who gave great service to their clubs and won BnFs, Norm Smiths, AA, etc..

If the Hawks spent pick #1 on a sub 180cm, slow back pocket with questionable skills I will be melting.

This isn't the 90s/early 2000s anymore where drafting was a complete crapshoot. Anything but an AA level talent at pick 1 is a waste IMO.

Some guys might get unlucky with injuries and that's just bad luck but you're asking for trouble when you pick those weird Dodoro tweeners he had a hard on for.

Early 2000s and even mid 90s wasn't really a crap shoot. Everyone knew in the 2000 and 2001 drafts who the best players were and they were right.

But it's been shown in the last 25 years that more than a handful have had really minimal impact. I think it's pretty evenly split into 3rds of Elite club greats, very good long term players, duds.

I'd much rather McGrath than 2 years of Scully than him leaving or Watts, Patton or McCartin.

I just love how Essendon continue to self-destruct off field. They are a club divided between the current administration, past players, power brokers, coterie groups and of course Kevin Sheedy. They all think they know better, and long may it continue!
Theyre a club that is run by past players, power brokers, and coterie groups, not just divided by it. They are for all intents and purposes a community club that has found themselves in a professional league

If you love him so much why don't you marry him.

Still waiting for your laugh react in the 'Best Player You've Ever Seen' thread on the MB by the way
Sorry, busy time of the year and all. 😂

Like Carlton, they are an organisation who make a lot of revenue, service a huge membership and also run a football program.

Carlton is slowly turning it around and separating the past players, coterie groups/benefactors, and members from the football department.

Essendon are miles from that though

Yeh not quite… lets just say that there is still quite a bit of tension internally and few people not overly excited by the way Graham Wright has handled himself so far

rome wasnt built in a day.
We were extremely fortunate that dunstall came on board in the early 2000s, he was the ultimate professional that allowed the past players and coteries to feel heard.
Carlton havent been so lucky there, but theyre very slowly making the changes

I simply respect him.

It’s not hard to do.

Why you choose to engage on this issue like a 5 year old child is a matter for you.

Yep. Spot on.

Further to that though….

I’m sure North are ecstatic that they drafted the elite talent of Horne Francis - that has worked out so well for them.

Same for the Bulldogs and the talisman that is Ugle-Hagan.

Such brilliant players and exceptionally #1 astute selections that have made excellent contributions to the clubs that drafted them - don’t you think?

"'Trotts' and me had had a lot of chats with ‘Macca' [McKenzie] and Sam about my desire to play AFL footy and had been quite open with them throughout the year. I was out of contract and was communicating throughout the year that if there was an opportunity I would want to explore it. They were really good about it and were very understanding about getting a trade through." [...] Despite the lack of exposure at Hawthorn, Serong left on decent terms. Mitchell provided him with regular feedback across this year, while McKenzie helped facilitate a move to the Swans. They rate him at the Hawks and believe he can become a permanent fixture at AFL level. "I have a lot of love for the football club; I have a lot of love for Sam and 'Macca' and the way they handled the situation. I wouldn't be the player I am today without their help over the last four years." - Jai Serong on requesting a trade out of Hawthorn. https://www.afl.com.au/news/1460122...he-chance-to-play-with-his-star-brother-caleb

Obviously it's different in that Serong was out of contract, but I can't help but compare and contrast this situation (dealt with by a mature club) with the Merrett situation.

The EFC and their staff have been horrible to deal with for a long time, there’s a reason players of decent calibre don’t go there, and a reason players of decent calibre want to leave there.

There’s many reasons why they haven’t won a final in so long, their treatment of their own players and their pig headed dealings during draft and trade week are some of them.

Agree, JHF is one of the best players North Melbourne have ever drafted and he will have a great career....for Port Adelaide.

Similarly Dogs fans will always love Tom Boyd, but GWS got barely anything out of him.

Both clubs got some trade value back but it's like the Judd vs Hodge compassion. Hawthorn got more from their selection than West Coast did.

He took it back with him to England 😂
I thought, since he wasn't playing, he was going to stock up on red and black pillows at the boxing day sales.
