I'm no where near his age but am a child of the 70s/80s so I kind of get it...back then, you could knock out Revell model plane kits in no time, but building the Bismarck was The challenge.

Just part of his regression to childhood, has he endured any stressful events recently? Get him one of these kits to keep him busy building his special battleship.

I loved these models as a kid. My boy got some shit plane - if that was a spitfire I would have built it myself within 10 minutes of seeing it. Water paint or enamel?

Yeah, I was building them, too. And then all too often blowing them up with firecrackers or incinerating with lighter fluid.
Actually in a bid to get my son, and now my students interested in some hobbies other than scrolling or watching TV, I've been making paper models, including a large Mayflower.

As to the bolded, █████ little hands lack the dexterity or fine motor controls for model-making. They can only grab...the model.

Nah, I'm not that old...guessing enamel because liked the smell. Thought i was pretty cool when I came across 'skin' coloured paint in K-Mart one day, that one small tin did the face of about eleventy-hundred pilots.
