Agreed.
But most of this guys “athletes” were mums old enough to have kids in high school and their numbers were far from competitive at comps (talking low 100s for squats and mid-100s for deads).

There are a few exceptions. My mate, who was in the AIS weightlifting program in school and weighed 90kg (at about 175kg) by the time he finished school, said Luke Tapscott (ex-Melbourne) was in his school year and always had bigger quads somehow.

genetics!

like the 45 year old non lifting dad who has calves the size of tree trunks, but he pushed a wheelbarrow full of concrete everyday since he was 16.

Afl players are generally 15 to 18% bodyfat. Occaaionally a player like Brad Ebert hits super low bf and they get brushed aside. Theres a sweet spot.

There are players that would be beasts in the gym though

most would be around the 12% give or take 2% but you will have outliers like bailey smith in the single digits or someone like luke ryan closer to 20%

the weight training component of an AFL footballer is to increase strength mostly for the young players, improve some explosiveness/speed and also assist all players particularly senior players with injury prevention. Running would be the main focus of all clubs, since the rotation boom of 2010 players physiques have changed from the early 2000's - early 90's when the game went full time. Rotations only existed for punishment for poor decisions/poor performance. So players like Crawf and Harvey, Bucks dominated as they ran a consistent pace all day, the later two were much bigger builds thana lot of current day mids.

Oficially done with the body scanner at the gym. Bulking last 3 weeks. Clear visual impeovement. Look leaner with the mass. Scanner says Ive put on 600g fat lost 100g muscle since last scan.

Bodyfat says 24.5%. I was hoping to reliably use this as a tool.

Guess I just follow the process.

Bought these battered squid rings pre cut, held onto them until my bulk but for some reason anything battered, or highly fatty makes me sick. I remember going to a very expensive restaurant a while back and everything was deep fried in duck fat and I got super sick after eating it.

All I seem to be interested in is Fish and Chips, meat balls, or chilli beef, chicken and salad,

I have looked into those quotes from me quite extensively, if you are interested and have the time the long video I linked(#5631) explains it all a lot better than I could in a Big Footy discussion. Dr Fettke is brilliant... IMO.

FWIW even staunch Carnivore doctors that I have mentioned in my post you quoted say that Vegetarian/Vegan diets are a hell of a lot better than the "normal" Western junk/takeaway/highly processed type diet and you will see noticeable improvement when you start. They just don't think it is sustainable long term(a few say 3-5 years) for optimal health.

As you say each to their own, I wish you good health.

I'm closing in on 10 years vegan. Got to say, I'm in better health/shape than I was 10 years ago. Playing a lot of sport, also into a bit of circus/flex stuff now with my girlfriend.

Interested in how some of the LCHF crew are getting on? It's been a while.

I saw a comparison between two people, one had short legs and other had long legs but were similar height. The female with the shorter legs would likely have a genetic advantage for squats. But we know this: you do occasionally find all round athletes but there wouldn't be very many that dominate in all three lifts at the top. I follow various people on Instagram of which one has a 160kg squat, but can only deadlift 130, and bench 80 (100% natty) I've seen others with stronger relative bench, and deadlift to squat.

Vegetarian I could do. Vegan no way.

I was vegetarian for many years before converting, and said the same...

Was genuinely surprising how easy it ended up being. Only downside is convenience when out with friends, but almost everywhere now has options so it's so much easier than it was when I made the switch 10 years ago.

Helped that I did it in South America where the cheese is rubbish to begin with.

If I was looking at purely health, I'd add meat into a diet before dairy. The stuff just isn't good for you.

Anyone have any insights into Cholesterol levels?

Got some bloods done recently as I had a couple of unrelated concerns.

Showed LDL level of 3.5 mmol. Just interested in thoughts as it’s quite high. Other levels seem pretty good and happy to share if need be. A lot of conflicting evidence out there.

I've been keto/carnivore/ketovore for the last 12 years. Doing really well.

After doing a bit of a bulk, I got unhappy so I've decided to staircase step back and get a DEXA before the new year to see where I'm at.

Here's my cut so far. I'm much more disciplined than last time and feel like I'm maintaining more muscle mass than last time too. I feel leaner. In the last 10 days I've increased mass in abs and legs by upping my workouts which is why I had the plateau scale wise.

Crumbed fish -> Skinless fish
Sugar free Red bull
No bread, no processed foods, only well rounded foods, low kj, high protein. Going for 7200kj per day additional and oversupply for my hikes.

So many variables to consider. I know the scales have a 400g variance. My morning weight plateaued for 10 days but the evening weight consistently dropped in that period until the morning weight dropped.

I swear Peter Siddle has never been quite the same bowler since he changed his diet, and looks different in the face almost slightly gaunt. Vegetarianism I can understand but to me being Vegan seems just extremist. Like just an opposite of that Paleo.
11 years later, and he's still bowling mid 140's and absolutely dominating.

Not sure a call could be much more wrong to be honest.

I learned something this week. I always knew about water weight but not to the full extent that I experienced. Here's an anecdotal experience.

Ignoring the first 2 weeks of my cut which was rapid for a variety of reasons I'd been losing weight at a steady pace, perhaps at a rate of 600g per week but then I had a sharp drop, then plateau, then I got sick, another drop followed by another plateau. I plateaued for about 10 days going absolutely nowhere eating around 7000kj per day. I went to the cricket with dad and had a 300g steak, chips and probably had a slight surplus that day. I didn't eat unhealthy, just much more than I was eating. Within 2 days I'd shed a shit load of water weight. My morning weight was 66.4kg and I dropped to 65.2KG which is now holding steady. What I learned is how cortisol spikes happen when cutting and it's usually a big meal as crazy as it might sound if you're not familiar with how it works, ends up shedding water weight.

It's made me re-evaluate how I'm going to go forward from here. More to the point that I will probably go for 5-6 days at 7000kj and then go for a big meal once a week with neutral or slight deficit.

Feeling good too, the recent bulk is still holding well and finally starting to see some good shape in the obliques, and arms.

I'm basically keto/ketovore depending on the day. My body is a bit effed up and goes haywire on any decent amount of carbs, kinda turn into a bloated sluggish mess, combined with most grains causing mary hell to my stomach, it's just the easiest way of life for me personally.

Will I gas out quicker than carb fuelled lifters and stuff? Maybe, but I'm not too worried about losing some ego contests if I have a better quality of life than I otherwise would have.

I had a high protein day on the 23 December. By the 25th I had dropped 1.4kg. I then had a high carb sort of day and went back up 1.8kg. It's taken a good week to get back to that low figure (65.2kg) this morning. Hoping I can get into the 64s this week.

Might have been water weight tho?

Yeah it was. That's why I ate protein only before my christmas show ;) and going out for the cricket.

It's a real pain in the ass dealing with water weight.

Tracking your weight every day and wanting short term movement as your goal is pointless. If you are cutting in a 500 cal deficit it's still going to take more than a couple weeks to lose a kilo of fat
