Wouldn't mind.

They are better than most of the names in the BBL already.
Yeh I think the fans would get used to it after a little while. For all the talk of branding, I wouldn't exactly say that the Stars, Renegades, Sixers and Thunder have really established any real brand uniqueness that sets them apart in NSW and VIC.

The other states have established some brand recognition with their teams, but I put this mainly down to them (especially Perth) essentially being state teams.

I do however wonder if any potential privatisation has an eye on NZ expansion, as they are one of the few test playing nations not to have a franchise T20 league (they have a domestic comp).

The teams won't be rebranded. Prospective minority owners will be buying into what has been built or not buying at all. CA and the states have waited this long, they can wait a little more for the right investors to climb aboard.

Worth adding the Stars have a Seagull mascot (in a nod to the team's kleptoparasitism and how they nest in large, densely packed, noisy colonies) while the Renegades embrace alternative Big Red/Red Terror monikers (reflecting the team's heart and underdog status). So the branding is more on point than some realise.

A lot of opportunities with merchandise continue to be missed though. If I want to go to CA's online store and buy a Head 34 shirt in Striker blue, or a Molineux 23 in red, I should be able to do that with one click. The most basic way sports across the globe have promoted and celebrated their product for decades... still can't get it right in Australian cricket though.

Is the Stars Seagull link not entirely because of the incident with Rob Quiney and the resurrected Gull? Or did I miss a joke here?

I'd love to see two NZ teams come in but the danger is the cost as NZ doesn't bring in much money or player depth.

I'd hate to think how much cricket OZ is paying Rizwan to play.

105,000 attended over both matches today. Not bad for a league that's dying
To be fair, both of our Test Matches finished in two days, with the ODI’s played in October, realistically if you are a cricket watcher and you missed out on seeing big cricket, these are your few opportunities. With the MCG out for the first part of the tournament and thus the Stars having only 3 home games and this the only one in a weekend, tonight’s Derby was always going to be big.

I’m enjoying the season and always tune into the big bash every year.

I think the best thing they did was reduce the season to 10 games per team.

Sometimes less is more.

The only change I would like to see from here.

1 Perth team
1 Adelaide team
1 Brisbane team
1 Melbourne team
1 Sydney team
1 Hobart team

You have 10 rounds and play every team home and away.

2 less teams would see the quality increase significantly. You look at some teams and think should that player realistically be getting a game.

Anyway that’s my 2 cents go the Hurricanes.

The three issues with that are.
You lose the derbies which are well attended and draw interest

Scheduling wise it becomes really difficult to have a game every night and almost impossible to have two games in a day so doesn't work for TV. The comp is built in momentum and the familiarity of a game each night over summer.

One game each day makes it an early start for Perth games that are well attended. An early start in the heat can be an issue.

The other factor is the Stars dont suck. For thr last few years theyve been out of contention by new years day

Nah they still suck, choking is their strong suit, but it’s about opportunity to see high standard cricket live and for me as a still actively involved in senior cricket, person in a regional area, the scheduling makes it hard to get to. I got to Day 2 of the Test 🙌 and with the next two games on Training nights - (Tuesday & Thursday) that was my only real option.

Reckon he's correct it's the best formula. A ten game season, everyone plays each team home and away, so much fairer, and the talent of the six teams would be higher than what is currently spread across eight. The league would probably be better if it started after the Sydney Test and all the Aussie players took part. I understand the reason why both of these things probably won't happen but reckon it's the best outcome from a playing quality perspective.

I think there'd be a few disappointed people if it went back to a 6 team comp and it wasn't state based. Personally think a 10 game state season with aus players and a few imports would be great. Much more appealing than the Indian takeover.

The real issue is this. The ILT20 just finished in Dubai and the SA20 is in full swing in South Africa. Both of those have Indian IPL money involved. Across the ditch the New Zealandera are also banging away. If some teams are privatised, where is all this going to fit in?

The best formula gets the biggest crowds and TV audiences so they won't go down that path.

The broadcasters are also not going to let the Tennis get no competition from Cricket during nights in January. You have to have Cricket on every night. That's why you need the eight teams.

Yeah there is also the tenuous link to how all the seagulls swarm the MCG and some of them get hit by the ball...

But it's mostly because of their shameless feeding on talent from other teams and states. Maxwell and A.Sutherland original Gades, Stoinis from WA, Lanning from Sydney. None of their Stars homegrown since Warne.

Given I'm not part of CA, crowds and TV audiences aren't the deciding factor in what I think is the best formula. Game quality and fairness rank much higher for me. Anyway, I said I know the reasons they won't do it, but I still think it would provide a superior competition.

I understand your points but surely you could still have cricket on every night with 6 teams.

Apologises if I’m missing something obvious as to why that wouldn’t work.

Yes, Teen Wolf has completely fabricated his "reason" cos, I dunno, he dislikes them?

Annabel Sutherland played all of 4 games for the Gades as a 15yr old before moving to the Stars the next season - not sure too much should really be read into that

As for Lanning - is that for Meg or Anna, or is there another Lanning I can't think of? While Meg was born in Singapore, she's played her domestic cricket within Victoria other than 2 seasons she went out west to play with the Scorchers, with sister Anna being born in NSW but playing her cricket within Vic

I understood it was purely about the hit seagull - the other reasoning would make zero sense for a club to then design a second mascot; it sounds like something other teams would design for them instead

Sutherland's big brother plays for the Renegades too, I believe. As for Meg, we all know what they say about being technically correct. These being but a few examples of a consistent pattern of behaviour by the title-less franchise akin to rabid coastal birds swarming a hot chip.

MCG Green Goblins and the Melbourne Marvels are two more fitting names for the crosstown rivals, very much sums up each team's role in the city as villain and hero.

So, essentially, you made it up because you don't like the Stars. Gotcha.

No, the Melbourne Stars adopted the Seagull mascot to belittle their own culture.

I'm told another name change they are considering is the Melbourne Sloppy Seconds.

It's a crazy reach he's gone for some of those examples

As an example, Lanning's family moved to Vic prior to her starting high school and she only ever played state cricket for Victoria, but because she played primary school cricket for NSW, the Stars reportedly "stole her"

Interesting that he's not making the same complaints for those who were born in Vic before moving interstate - either at a young age with family, or after starting their careers here

I'm a Gades fan, so the Stars are kinda our main rival, but even I can't go to those lengths in an attempt to hang shit on them

I don't support any team in the BBL. I was Stars initially but got over it. The hoops he's jumping through are entertaining though
