They had Larwood's grandson on the ABC at lunch, he and his mum lived with him until he died and he spoke about getting up in the morning and finding Hadlee in the backyard talking with his grandad.
speaking of old timers a good interview with Neil Harvey in today's paper

Same way Duckett and Crawley “looked alright” in that second innings. Hard to take anything away from that game.

Fact is he’s played his best two innings in the second dig with minimal pressure on (in comparison to a live match with Starc, Hazlewood and Cummins tearing in).

Still had to score them but it’s not as difficult to do. I reckon if we’d played one of our up and coming players they’d have scored a bunch of runs and be getting the same circlejerk Bethell is getting.

Compare his circumstances to the way Konstas was introduced to example. Poles apart.

Minimal pressure? You think he’s not feeling pressure when they’re 1-5 and 170 behind facing Starc and Boland just because of who’s NOT there 😂

But have we got batters to play those daft shots like Martyn's?
It has been a constant source of amazement to me how Martyn cops so much flak for that loss - given Taylor/Slater/Mark Waugh/Border/Boon/Healy couldn't get the side to the 117 runs needed for the win (they scored 71 runs between them).

Nothing to loss "pressure". No top order batsmen can survive averaging 10 in the first innings as usually that's were the game is won or loss.

Hazelwood no better than Boland 🤣 didn’t bother reading anything after that dribble.

In his career? No. Hazlewood’s had a fantastic career.

At the moment and for the rest of their careers?

Hazlewood only managed 4 tests all of last year didn’t he, and it has become something of a trend that he’s missed tests. Boland played more, took more wickets, at a better average, and a better strike rate.

So it’s questionable whether Hazlewood is ever going to reach the level that made him what he was at his peak.

People have discounted Hayden's 380, because it was made against Zimbabwe. It's a factor, but it still required monumental powers of concentration to bat for long enough to compile a score like that.
People discount Bradman’s average as ‘easy to bat against weak bowling’when there is no one who played during that era that’s within 30 runs of it.

Does anyone know if they eventually applied snicko to the final delivery, was a definite noise there. Not talking about the match just the telecast.

They showed snicko pretty quickly on the Foxtel broadcast. As someone else said, the noise came after the ball went past the bat (and well beyond the grey area where the noise from an edge can be out of sync with the video frames).

That one was even cheaper, $10 for all tickets on that Day 5.
And it was one of the few smart moves Cricket Australia have ever done. 75,000 in the ground and then you sell a heap of food and drinks at inflated prices

Of course. And even the worst bowler can remove a batsman with a good ball at a given moment

So now that Ben Stokes series is over (won't bowl tomorrow), what's the assessment of him?

Bowling- Solid. 15 wickets with an average of 25, is a great return and he usually could find something when others struggled.

Batting- Flopped. 184 runs at an average of 18 and strike rate of just 36.58! Boycott nearly had a better strike rate!

Captaincy- Disastrous. Strange choices for opening bowlers, clueless when plans weren't working, not selecting Tongue earlier, looked completely cooked on-field and too many tantrums for my liking.

He's had his moments and been a aggressive captain in the past, but honestly he captained worse than Freddy Flintoff 06/07 this series. Would not be surprised if this is his last series as leader.

Stokes has been living on past glory’s for a while.
I still think McCullum runs everything and Stokes is just a puppet captain.
